Please help with hoverboard parts

Dennis,

What thickness of plastic are you thinking would be good for the vacuform?

I had someone vacuform my old parts with a home made machine and we seemed to lose too much detail with anything greater than .050 . However, I am not sure if that was because a homemade vacuform is not strong enough to pull thick plastic (it's just a vacuum cleaner and not very powerful).

You have experience with this so you would not better than I do. Just curious on your thoughts.

Grant, the vacuformer I am repairing is for school use. Made by Kelvin. I think the plastic is around .02" but not positive. The 3d plastic is porous so it is made to be vacuformed...

I only have experience with this "for school use" style vacuformer. Nothing commercial. Though I do know the printed parts are made to be vacuformed.

Interesting about it being porous... it should work really well then (better than resin parts).

Yeah, I don't think there would be much difference between the one you are using for school and industrial style ones.

Look forward to seeing the results.

I think bttf123 is selling some parts for the hoverboard!

This is mine ^^

WOW nice :love:thumbsup Excellent gear :p:thumbsup

I still have the molds from the ICONS parts as pictured earlier in the thread, but I am not sure if they are good enough to handle more castings - I may have to make another set of molds BUT can try getting a few more pulls out of them and start a thread in the JY.
I know a lot of people are interested in these after the whole Matty thing went down so once I have some time I will try and make a few castings and see how they look.

GeneralFrosty, are the ICONS molds from a screen used hoverboard? I honestly havent been around here long enough to know all the lingo...
If they are screen accurate, would you be able to give a few basic dimensions so I can check how accurate the ones I made are? I would really appreciate it.

Icons was a prop replica company that was going to make a replica hoverboard in the late 90's but they went out of business when the hoverboard was half complete. They were 'allegedly' cast from the real molds but you never know since it's been so long. They certainly look the same but some things look a bit off to my eye. Maybe they had the prop and copied it the best they could? It's weird that there are some key differences to the magnets below (especially the battery box and upper clamp) compared with GeneralFrosties pics of his casts:

Would you be able to share the dimensions with us GF?

The Icons board pictured above I used to own, but sold to a collector years ago, my parts were molded directly off those "master" parts and are identical.
As far as I know, the Icons parts are cast from a screen-used board.
My parts are packed away so I can't get you measurements at this time.

Ok, sorry I havent worked on these in a long time (life happens sometimes) where did we leave off?
I want to finish these and call them done so I can get something checked off my list.

We agreed that the parts may be a perfect match to the resin parts, but would have to see what they look like once vacuformed. Did you get the machine fixed?

Overall, the thickness of the brackets may be a hair too thin.

Note: Only the part that touches the base of the board needs to be a little thicker (see photo of the blank molds above on this page). The point where it 'wraps' and 'cruves' around the magnet looks great.

But in all seriousness, they look awesome 'as is'. Not sure much else is to be done.

Never got the machine fixed. I might settle with my resin style parts as they would look the cleanest on nearly any board build anyway.

I will increase the thickness of the brackets that touch the board and see what everyone thinks.

Yes, I made the thickness larger as you recommened, I will take a screen capture and see if there is a general approval... Then I will 3D print it and should be able to call these parts done. I am holding off on doing the pitbull parts just yet as I have a few other bttf projects that are taking priority.
