Painting a Mander Wolf - Step By Step

Real nice job mate ;)

Go buy yourself some airbrush stuff and get painting more.

You'll be getting cimmisions the way your going ;)

Amazing work and color flow Jason. I love the detail in veins in the mouth and wow love the pinkish color looks. When I first seen the beginning shots I did know how well the green was going to stand out on the blackish grey areas. You pulled a rabbit out of your hat on that and truly amazed on your painting skills and blending of colors. You still keep teaching me with your sick skills.

Thanks Scott. I really had fun with this one. I didn't want to start with the P1 because its the one I knew I would be most critical of because I know how a P1 should look. I figured I could practice on the Wolf and then learn from how it turned out.

I'll post some more pics later to show off the permawet...he sure looks juicy now!

This mask has turned out really outstanding for you! Fantastic job on your airbrushing as well!

This will surely prove to be an incredibly useful reference for many here in the future. Wonderfully done, from start to finish. Thanks for sharing all this w/ us here!

Thanks for all the feedback. When I first came to the Lair and got into this stuff, I was always blown away when I saw the stuff that was being done by some of the best artists who KNEW how to draw/paint/sculpt all things Predator. There were a few tutorials by a few people, but not that many and not that detailed. TMI was the first to post a start to finish paintup on a DBP1 and that got me totally stoked! I told myself that I could do that and then it was just a matter of waiting until I got a latex head. I stumbled upon TWO awesome heads and I went to town.

The whole reason I wanted to do a tutorial was to show people that if I can do it, then surely they can as well. I have a lot of respect for these guys that airbrush fine details and make them look lifelike with the underlying veins. Some people don't want to give away trade secrets or maybe they just dont want to take pics of the whole process...but I think that teaching others can be very rewarding in itself.

Mine isn't perfect, but I'm really impressed at how it turned out. And hey, maybe if Larry sees this he can show us a little sneak peak of how he does a paintup next time...

I totally forgot to post more pics after I put the Permawet on! DOH! Oh well, unless you've been ignoring my P1 post, you already saw them. I would have gone and taken more pics of him alone, but its snowing outside and I'm just not in the mood! Here he is:

I wonder - if you were to take screen-used P1 & Wolf heads and put them side by side - how much bigger would the Wolf be?

The Wolf is Manders interpretation of Wolf, and the P1 is Daniel Bravos version, but how accurate are they to the real ones I wonder...?

Any theories anyone?

I think ALL the movie masks would be closer to the larger Mander Wolf mask than most masks out there. Think about all the behind the scenes reference pics you've seen from P1, P2, AVP. All those heads were huge on 7 foot tall actors, so think about how big they'd be on normal 6 foot tall people. Nobody has come close (yet) to making a proper sized P2 hero mask. It most likely would be about the same height as Mander's Wolf mask there.

The Mander Wolf mask is the largest mask I've seen in person so far, and I truly believe it's probably quite close to the overall sizing of the various screen used masks....especially the P2.
