P2 Closed Mouth Build. Raw Latex 1St Pull P24 24/11/11

Yeah not sure if the toothpicks are the best idea as a quick test shows latex sticking to them, im sure ill find something plastic the same diameter to try though lol.

There plenty of space for you in San Diego
Now back to that p2 head....Im getting one of those.

ok not much of a update, but i thought i would show what i did to fix the quill holes issue.

last night i drilled approx 5mm into all the places that the quill holes had broke off, then i cleaned out the holes of dust, i then mixed up some Apoxie sculpt and rolled some long spines, which i left cure over night.

Today i then cut up the spines so they were sticking out of the drilled holes by approx 2-3mm then i used some of this super duper glue i have to secure them in place.

Then once set i took a small brush and brushed some plaster dust around the edge of the newly made quill holes, then sprayed with water to make it run into any tiny gaps around them, i did this only twice, and it seems to have worked well enough, i had to be alittle careful not to get dust on the main mould part , but it was pretty simple and easy to be honest.
so here is the result.

next step, silicone p2 on friday ( assuming foam arrives )

Nice, thanks for sharing the photos, really appreciate it. That's pretty thick, is the entire mold that thick or just the wall?

The edge of the wall is slightly thicker than the rest or it, reason being, i am always scared that if the mould is tight upon trying to open it, i may have to crank on it, and do damage if its thin. ( i know in reality from doing these its unlikely for that to happen )

Also i make my moulds fairly thick for a couple of reasons, 1st and foremost ...... stopping them breaking, especially with me moving, i want them strong.

also rightly or wrongly, i am under the impression that because latex dries by the moisture being sucked out via the plaster, if the mould is thin, the moisture will stay in the surface and shorten the lifespan of the mould, my 1st mould is 5 & 1/2 years old and still ok, and i think the fact that is was thick and the moisture possibly gets spread out, means the details hang around alot longer.

could be rubbish but hey

Yeah I can vouch for that 1st mold, it's a thick heavy mother f*cker. The 2 pulls I've taken out of it are flawless and again thanks for the mold :D

You skills are amazing Usurper. Can't wait to see this beast in latex!

Edit: meant Silicone..

Yes, it will not rot as quick as Latex, flexes more, the paint is chemically adhered basically so flexes well and doesnt come off.

you should see the abuse my P1 head has had already , and the paint is perfect still.

sadly the cost is also ALOT more.

Awesome to hear the silicon has arrived. Do you cast silicon the same way you would latex? Just curious for future projects. Thanks for your responses too.

Lee......thats one fat, clean looking mould man.....I've fixed one of my mould with epoxy putty....worked fine but the only problem is, when you cast with latex (which I know you are planning after you got your silicone casts) it wont absorb any moisture as it is impermiable (dont know if I spelt that correctly lol) so the latex will be thin in those areas....with mine, I need to dap some thickend latex on those areas when it is dry before I foam it and take it out the mould.
As it's only the quill holes in your case, it might not be too much of a problem tho.....just letting you know.
Cant wait to see a silicone cast from this tho.....are you going to make a plug this time round?
