I actually made a set of these early on in our prop replicating journey...but was never really satisfied with anything other than the metallic badges. {I did use one of the versions of the paper/laminated badges from either our paper props forum here or somewhere else on the web though - can't take credit for that part of em'...}

Anyway, here's some pics of the reworking of the credentials. I like the way they turned out with a few complaints I'll keep to myself...since I did the work.

{I actually think the shot o' my piles o' failure is my favorite...}

Those are really cool. Always thought those would be a great prop to own.

At first I thought you were using leather but are they actually made from vinyl? The backing looks like the stuff I used for my Kirk chair.

And I've got to ask: Do you walk around the house flashing things?:lol

Yeah, I used marine vinyl fabric, (which I used for my Trek chair too, along with a couple other projects). It actually looks great, I think. It's got a leather-like texture & is a uniform width/density to work with. I tried to do all the sewing around the edges/windows on them by hand a couple times & eventually had to go back to using a sewing machine...for just the second time in appx. 20 yrs.

As for flashing em' around the house, I'll admit that after finishing them, I wandered around the 'Museum' room flipping em' open & closed pretending to be Mulder for a minute or two. Something I'm not ashamed of since that's the very reason I make most of this stuff - to recapture some of that joy, that imaginary immersion into the world(s) that these things come from.

A rough template/pattern for the wallet. I tried to give the dimensions I wound up at but there was quite a bit of trial & error involved. I was asked elsewhere to come up with a sorta' "How To..." on this thing so this is a starting point for it...

I've always wandered this site looking at everyone else's post and finally made one just to post on this thread...

Anyways, I've always wanted to but never made a replica prop before and thought that this one might be a good starting place for me. But with being an absolute newbie to making these things, I was curious what you used for the gold FBI badge and for the ID card (like if you used a screen capture from the show, etc.)? I grew up watching this show with my family, so I figured my first attempt at this should be with something that was a fond childhood memory of mine.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. Didn't see the last post. I made a ROUGH mold of an FBI mini-badge I have & created two badges out of epoxy putty, (obviously not the best stuff to use, but it's what I had handy at the time), from that. Painted em', cleaned em' up, etc. The paper badges are either from the paper props forum here or somewhere out on the web, don't recall, honestly.

I'd love to have another metal one so that I could use ACTUAL metal badges...but I did the best I could with what I had.

There are some sites you can order those badges....

Instead of painting the shields, you could buy gold metal sheets that modellers use, and using a boning tool, work them into the crevasses. Won't pass the 1 foot test, but at five feet and out, or for film/video, hard to tell. Also, a cheap source of leather for making commission card cases are real leather skirts and purses. I get them at goodwill for pennies on the dollar. Well, when I am not being questioned for fingering these items looking for the right pebbling.... LOL!
