Original Tie Pilot gunmetal paint question...

...after checking out some High Def screen grabs of the ANH Tie pilots with the gunmetal details I've got a question...but I'm not sure anyone will know the answer..We know the gunmetal details on Vader in ANH were applied with a brush after it was discovered the all black helmet and armor did not photograph well...my question is:

Were the gunmetal details on the ANH Tie pilot helmets used in the cockpit scenes applied with a brush..and is it the same gunmetal paint used on Vader?

I imagine the answer to both to be yes the paint on the cheek tubes looks brushed to me.
