Official Star Trek Phaser Thread

Well, besides the fact I actually like Trek V, if you skip it you'll miss out on the only looks at the sliding cowl on the assault phasers...

Oh, I have all of the DVD Directors' editions (except Nemesis which is awful). I love the text commentaries.

And I'll also admit to having a fondness for ST:V because it's one of the first movies I ever saw on opening night. I was 16 years old when it came out and I waited at the end of a long line to get a terrible seat all the way up front and on the extreme left-hand side of the theater, but it was a lot of fun. I even sent away for a Kraft marshmallow dispenser -- my first Trek prop.

Anyway, I acknowledge that it's one of the weaker entries into the Trek oeuvre.

The Jack Marshall edit of Trek V, sometimes called the 'Phantom edit' is actually quite good. Track it down, it's worth downloading, and is a much better version IMHO.

This thread is about the phaser not the movies.

But come on......

.......aliens from out of nowhere, mysteriously show up at Earth to destroy it unless the WHALES(?.?.?) show up and start talking.

Who greenlighted that pitch meeting?

Well let's stay focused on phasers then... :lol

To help get us back on track, here are a couple items I don't think were posted yet... the IPI "laser pointer" TNG Cobrahead phaser

And here's a fanmade replica I picked up off the board here... nice, it has the flip open door in the back, ala Data's phaser from "Ensigns of Command". (you can also build the Rodd.com kit this way)

Here's the fanmade again (top) shown with the Playmates TNG cobra phaser toy, which is actually not that bad either.

Ok I have to deffend the Playmates Phaser.. Gentlemen.. That phaser may be incaccurate now.. But at the time it was released.. It was the coolest phaser released to the general public.. and at a damn affordable price.. nobody at the time was screaming inacurate or anything like that.. we were asking for more..

The playmates phaser was based on a Phaser which appears to have been a mark English fake.. ... which they didnt know at the time.. this was before.. dvd screen caps etc..

The phaser for what it is.. a Toy.. is pretty dang cool.. sure the AA is better.. but we didnt have that at the time..

And as far as survival.. The playmates are very durable ....

I was going to get rid of mine.. until I found out they used them on Exeter 1 and 2.. so I decided to keep mine..

A phaser collection without a playmates is an incomplete collection.. and yes I got the mego phaser game too...

Oh I agree, at the time (mid-90s), I was very excited to get a Playmates TOS phaser. :D

Then I discovered Rich Coyle's site, and then RPF and ASAP... and discovered what I had been missing. :lol

The AA wipes the floor with the Playmates tho... the Playmates' P1 isn't even removable. :rolleyes

Playmates is, let's say, the "dummy phaser" of toys.

Mego's accessory toys ALL sucked, the blue communicators, the "tape deck" tricorder... I was actually a kid at the time AND loved Star Trek AND saw the Mego toys AT THE STORE and passed them up, they were so bad. :lol

And then, there's this monstrosity. :$

"Space Fun Helmet." :rolleyes

Yeah, I'm sure many a 10-year-old geeky Trek fan had his ass totally kicked if ever caught outside his yard wearing that thing... :lol

Man, that's awful.

I remember at one point a couple years ago there was that entire spat of concept phasers done. Saw it posted mid way too. I also thought there were more versions done at that time too. One I recal was similar to a TWOK look.

I wish I had my Mego toys still. They were crap, and fell apart. Mom took them back and got a refund. [all I remember having were those blue comms] Anyone remember the phaser that shot the round plastic discs? Or, the Phaser toy that was basically a flashlight, and you put these stencils in, and it projected the shadow of different lame versions Star Trek ships on the wall? I still have my AMT model version of the "Exploration set". Sadly the tricorder did not survive. [too much playing Arena, and tossing it as an exploding tricorder, LOL]

I had a set of those "communicators". I also had a Mego Kirk and Spock with the little blue phasers. Good memories.

Ok, so what is the correct paint scheme for a TOS Phaser 1 and 2?? I see many different ones here all with different schemes.

If anyone has a second, please let me know.

Thanks..

Tom
