Oblivion (Post-release)

The visuals are absolutely stunning. The story is a bit easy to guess, but still a very enjoyable and emotional film.

Oblivion 2013 Extensive Behind the Scenes Inside Look - YouTube

This is a fantastic 21 minutes video featuring behind the scenes look at creating the world of Oblivion. I love the fact that they didn't go for a green screen effect for the environment around the sky tower, but instead did it with a more innovative approach. And it's great to see that they went to so many real locations to shoot the film. Thanks to member Philip Wise for sharing the video link.

The critics over on this side of the pond were pretty less than enthusiastic about “Oblivion.” It didn’t get quite the mauling that “John Carter” got (released at roughly the same time last year ) but after listening to several of them it became like hearing sheep bleating in the rain. "Oblivion" was something they didn’t really like ,but could just about put up with.
I’ve got to say I enjoyed it. The story was nothing “new” but what is in sci fi these days of so many futures past. But it tried pretty hard and did fairly well to mix things up a little with some great homages to other films and the “Prometheus” crowd will have to have bit of a giggle at the various Icelandic landmarks and features that crop up. One waterfall looked VERY familiar indeed and the wasted Earth has never got to look better.
It is a stunningly beautiful film at times, sci fi home design done by IKEA robots and the hardware, particularly the enjoyably ocular drones look like something out of Halflife/Portal. Nowadays the special effects are so superb and almost seamless that you hardly notice them ,and the production and design teams in Oblivion are to be praised for some of the shots they managed. That sky house has gone to the top of places I’d definitely like to live in the future.
The action pieces are very good, the story does predict itself a little as been said but I really did like it on the whole. Cruise always seems to get a bit of a bashing for his performances but I thought he worked well with this character. If not quite as strong as “Minority Report” it was good enough. And I thought the “triangle” worked well, but the actresses were both so physically flawless as the house I almost felt they were CGI at times.
It was a piece of solid and enjoyable entertainment. I wasn’t expecting an earth shattering tale (though quite why the moon got it in the neck interests me) but I’d happily watch it again. Definite a B+ from me, but then I was in a pretty good mood on this warm sunny day anyway.

Saw it in the theater two days ago and liked it... as was said before, there are plenty of stunning and beautiful visuals, which kind of drew me in and let me oversee the bits that were, well, 'inspired' by a certain movie. (the one that was hinted at in the beginning of this thread) ;)

I really love the music for this one! :thumbsup
It has a fresh vibe to it, although there are definitely some Zimmer-things going on there... when I noticed it in the theater (the track was Oblivion Soundtrack ( M83) - 2. Waking Up - YouTube ) at first I thought Zimmer did write the music. Turns out I stand corrected, since it was french band M83. Really looking forward to this score... hits shelves on April 26.th here).

The drones were cool! :cool Felt and behaved like some proto-Terminators, also great sound-design there! :D

well my partner and I saw Oblivion on Monday and both really liked it, conversely my parents absolutely hated it. But for me it hit all the right beats.

I don't see it as an upbeat film, it was just filled with so much pathos, poignant music, harking back to that which was lost. and the tragedy of Jack and Victoria was just too much, I actually had a slight tear in my eye late on at how much they had both been used.

When Morgan Freeman was telling Jack about the 'war' I welled up. imagine hearing someone tell you that when the alien troopships landed, it wasn't aliens, it was thousands of yourself that came pouring out, laying waste and killing indscriminately and that everything you believed was a lie. ouch.

but the most tragic of all I felt was the Victoria character. Taken by the tet, her nascent 'love' or affection for jack twisted so that they can work together and then being so well made by the Tet and indoctrinated that she cannot see what Jack sees or alternatively she does want to see, and while Jack faces his 'dreams' or memories, for her they scare her too much.

and then when he loses her right in front of him only to try and save Victoria '52' asking her to come with him and she still refuses.

the final seal on it was the flashback as he goes to the Tet at the end and listens to the flight recorder and you discover that all of their little things like 'another day in paradise', the photograph of them together, even sally, are all moments from their lives that the Tet has taken and shaped for its own ends.

How this is getting poor reviews is beyond me. Just shows how much so called critics are warped. Clones, etc is not the most original twist, we know that, it's been done before and in Moon was done very well.

However the film gave character, wonderful scenery and location work, awesome FX work and overall I rate the film very highly.

I'm going to watch this on Netflix, but at this point I just have to stay way from any Tom Cruise movie in the theaters because they guy just seems to have no range. He's the same character in every movie. The only movie that ever seemed to show any range was "Born on the 4th of July" It looks like it is pretty though.

maybe a smidge unfair. but I wouldn't say he's get huge range but then look at the parts he plays. most of them are either serving military officers or ex-military and he plays them in a reserved controlled way, ie pretty much all the same, throwing in the occasional variation of emotional stability.

Oblivion isn't his worst film by any means and personally I think his portrayal in this movie fits. he plays a very introspective figure because in the situation he's in, if he was talk too much to vika, he could land himself in trouble, so he keeps himself to himself.

besides, if I was going out day after seeing how wasted the earth is I imagine I'd get quite introspective as well.

I'm going to give it try. From what I've read, despite this flick having Cruise...it still seems enjoyable.

Saw it today with the miss's.

We liked it. Good story, very good CGI + beautiful/amazing to watch.

The only bad thing is it's a bit dry the movie.

Rate it at 7.5.

Saw it tonight. Not a bad flick. Not a masterpiece by any means, but I liked it. As stated, the story is a bit predictable and borrowed in places, but it was well paced and intense enough in places to pull me in. Definitely a flick worth watching once. Visually stunning, very good sound design and music (except that crappy song at the end which completely kills the mood of the final scene), great acting.

The hardware is all very cool stuff too. I guess the aliens kidnapped the Apple design team to create everything before sending the clones in. Apparently when they built in all the high tech sensors, like the ones that sense human presence and can follow a DNA trail, they forgot to put in one that can sense those nuclear power cells when they get brought back to their own ship. You have to turn your brain off in a few places to enjoy it.

I'm not a big fan of Tom Cruise but I did enjoy this movie. Definitely saw a lot of the plot twists coming but was just happy they didn't kill Jamie Lannister :)
I also loved the over all look of the movie, landscapes were beautiful, and I want that pool.

The part that got me was why the sleeper compartment of the spaceship didn't continue into the Tet after it was jetisoned like the command module did...

Easy. The 'tractor' beam was 'attached' to the front of the spaceship. Once they separated that, it was the only part to be pulled in.

Saw it yesterday and loved it!! It's nice to go to the theater and see a decent sci-fi movie. Not sure why it is getting such bad reviews. I thought it was well done. Highly recommended! :)

excelent, for me the movie covers all my expectations, it's worth paying the cinema ticket to see.

Oblivion is a space opera offering a lot more in good way of what Hollywood give this days. Is the best tom cruise movie in years, not because of him but because is really a decent movie. Oh and almost forgot cool visual effects.
