Oblivion (Post-release)

I wonder how this film will stand on its own with Will an Jayden Smith having a blockbuster Sci Fi epic lined up right against it? Gonna have to check both of them out. :D

Oblivion looks MUCH better than After Earth. IMO of course.

I saw the trailer with The Hobbit this weekend and thought it looked pretty cool although I did get a bit of the Tim Burton Planet of the Apes vibe from the production design. Still, it looked pretty cool and it will probably be on my will try my best to see it list for next year.

Oblivion is releasing across most countries today and tomorrow on April 12, while it's getting released in US and few other countries on April 19.

I love that europe gets to see stuff earlier these days than we do. My mom's actually been watching the trailer for this and she's not a Cruise fan.

I went to see it with the Mrs. last night. I felt like it was a solid movie. Something stopped me from thinking it was amazing but it was still pretty damn good.
Beautiful visuals, excellent vehicle, weopon and set design. Just visually stunning all over.
I really hope UD replicas do a version of Tom's suit.
Plot was interesting, had some good twists but wasn't too original. It felt like it was bits of many other sci-fi movie plots mashed together.
Some of the dialogue also felt a bit forced but I still enjoyed the movie overall.
I'm calling Elvis 'Bob', from now on.

Heavy Future: Oblivion is a visual stunner and more

I wish I had the chance to see Oblivion in IMAX as it was meant to be seen that way. The movie is worth the ticket price for its stunning visuals alone especially all the gorgeous landscape shots. The production design team did a fantastic job while invoking this great vibe of sci-fi world for Oblivion; including the cool vehicles, drones, weapons and other tech which were also some of the highlights of the film.

Though it didn't really stand out throughout, M83 did a good score to the film with some memorable themes. (You can listen to the entire soundtrack linked in the above page which was composed by Anthony Gonzalez and Joseph Trapanese).

The world of Oblivion is established pretty quickly during the opening minutes of the film, while the story build up takes its time. Also it was interesting to see how a large portion of the film's beginning is carried out pretty much by only two characters, played well and effectively by Tom Cruise and Andrea Riseborough.

There are quite a few twists in the story and though they are far from original concepts, it works in the premise of the movie. Oblivion doesn't reach the levels of greatness I was hoping for, still it's a worthy and great step up by director Joseph Kosinski who has delivered a entertaining and visually compelling film.

If I hadn't seen and worshipped certain sci-fi indie movie, I would have really loved Oblivion and would have thought that is is one of the best science fiction movies of the 21st century. But Oblivion is to that movie what Avatar is to Pocahontas, same story with more money and lots of special effects. With also some 2001 Space Odissey in it. Actually, A LOT of 2001 Space Odissey, if you consider the "real" backstory (not the one they show in the trailers, lol). But I won't mention the one movie it really copies because it would be a very big spoiler that would ruin the fun for those who doesn't suspect it from the very beginning like I did T_T

Anyway, it's worth watching for what it is. Visually stunning, awesome soundtrack, good rythm, lots of (completely expected and taken from other movies) plot twists that keep you interested in what comes next (even if you do know what it is). I'm just a bit angry that this got all the money and distribution than the one it copied didn't get.

In that poster I can just picture Cruise yelling "Ah, damn you! ******** you all to hell!"

Well, you called it. There's even an explicit shout-out to PotA. By contrast, I suck:

Gorgeous art. Synopsis reads like it has a lot in common with Alita.

I took the skyscrapers-in-waterfall thing as being a metaphor, just for the poster. D'oh!!! So either something very weird has happened, or it's a simulated universe, Matrix-style?

Swing and a miss on everything; this isn't Alita, Elysium is. :lol The geology is never explained (yes, I know, they say words; the words don't actually explain anything about what we actually see). Just another case of Hollywood falling in love with its own concept art, saying 'let's worry about the logic for it later', and then never quite bothering with that part.

If I hadn't seen and worshipped certain sci-fi indie movie, I would have really loved Oblivion and would have thought that is is one of the best science fiction movies of the 21st century.

Well said. You can't escape noticing; it's as blatant as Event Horizon's thefts from The Black Hole. Not the only film it borrows from, but it doesn't stint.

Nailed it. OK, I'll hold off on names too but I was disappointed in that. Oh - and how many times have we seen this same ending now?

2001: A Space Odyssey lifts were heavy-duty. Good grief, it was even referenced by name. And by set design! Homage, okay, but there's such a thing as overkill...

Agree 100%. It isn't as good as TRON: Legacy, unfortunately. It borrows too much from others. On the other hand it's incredibly pretty and looks and feels good. Soundtrack is great.

I enjoyed it overall but it has Prometheus-level issues with the plot and with science and world-building.

Do you think they're an effective team? :lol

Works well enough, and no, not for me either. I know you didn't like TRON all that much but I honestly felt it's a better film than this.

Oblivion wastes screen time on nonsensical attempts to misdirect the audience. There are things that seemingly you are meant to take seriously and which set up some of the plot twists, but it isn't easy to buy them for a minute. Made a comment to my friend after Tom's opening narration - 'suckaaaaaaaaaaa'.

It is quite tense at times though, satisfying enough. Really amazing visuals. I wish we had IMAX too!

The other film is
Moon, by Duncan Jones. See it if you haven't already.
Don't click this spoiler tag if you actually want to be surprised...though, er, really, as mentioned...everything is easy to see coming a mile away.

Ha..right, hence my choice of words :D.

The nods to 2001 were too on the nose but I felt it was done that way deliberately as to indicate that it's a homage rather than say a blatant rip off.

Thanks, I'll go and watch it :)
Oh, now I wish you had discovered the movie yourself to be little surprised. :). Still more to discover though.

Hehe; did suspect so but wasn't sure. :)

May well be right but I'd have been satisfied with the name. The interior of the ship, the HAL visual refs, the thing with the rest of the crew was all just overdoing it.

When's it out in the States? I'm really looking forward to the US getting this film. We can have another Prometheus-style thread where we argue for the next year or more about the plot dynamics, the characters, the acting and all the messed-up physics. :lol

I think people will like the drones. They may resemble a heavily armed 2001 maintenance pod possesed by HAL on speed, but the sense of menace was strong. They're really pretty malevolent things in fact.

Ha..that will be fun if it turns out like that, but actually despite its shortcomings there is no way this movie will reach that level of active participation. Besides, Prometheus had the distinct advantage of being part of an existing beloved franchise that resulted in more passionate discussion.

Sorry, I'm caffeine deprived right now, d'oh.

Yes, expect you're about right, this is much lower-profile I guess.

I really wanted to love this. Instead, I like it, but that's all.

Why does a spaceship need a tail rotor??!? :lol

Seen it and liked it, maybe a bit more than tron and yes it has similarities to many different movies but what doesn’t when there are so many movies out there. At least it’s not just a remake.
