Nikki Sixx?

After getting my feet wet with the Jawa costume, I'm wanting to get in way over my head and attempt to reproduce Nikki Sixx's, white Theater of Pain stage robe/ kimono.

A couple questions....

What material do you think it's constructed of...I'm thinking Velour...?

I know it's a 100% custom piece, but if I were to look for a pattern that I could highly modify, what direction should I be looking in?

Also, the rivets and chains on the shoulders, where would I begin to look for those?

Here's a couple pics, they're just scans of magazine pics that I've found on Google. I may have some copies of my own in storage if these are too crappy.

Any and all help is appreciated!

don't forget the junk stains!

I'm not convinced by it being Velour - that would be pretty hot on stage.
more likely it is a blend of cotton and something.

I was hoping this would be for the Shout at the Devil years...good luck with your search
My current skills are incredibly remedial at this point and leather pants, studs, and plastic shoulder pieces are way out of my league right now.

I have the first picture which is alot better resolution and you can see the short, soft, velour nap on it, plus the way it stretches and drapes, I'm thinking a powder-white, single-sided, stretch velour knit is the best candidate.

Yea, I image it would be hot as hell, that's probably why he only wore them for a couple, three songs at the beginning of their shows and would take it off after that.

I happen to have grown up in the 80's hollywood scene and having known Mr. Sixx I will let you know that you are right about the material. It's similar to what drapes would be made of. That's why it lays and "drapes" so well. it does breath but it also gets very hot that's why several were made and cleaned often. Micheals craft store is the best place to find an assortment of chains and studs in the do it yourself jewelry section. Are you starting a tribute band or something?

Yea, but it's just going to be me, a one man band playing nothing but the bass lines to Shout at the Devil, while I'm wearing that robe. :lol

But no, I think it was around '86, there was a contest to win one of the white robes, I entered and didn't win, but I still love it and have wanted to have one for the last 23 years.

Going about acquiring the real-deal seems highly implausible, so I'll have to settle for a home-made facsimile. :unsure

Although I have recently contacted Ray Brown the actually designer of the robe to see if I could ask him a couple questions, but I haven't heard back yet.

I think what I really like about the Nikki Sixx's wardrobe for that Album is that it seems to have been heavily influenced by the 16th Century Italian theater, Commedia dell'arte.

I could be wrong, but he looked like a mix of a Trivelino, a Harliquin/ Jester and Pantalone....

...if you put a polka-dot harlequin body suit and shoes on Pantalone , then color the robe white, extend the sleeves, lose the lapel and put some fringe on there, it would be almost an exact match to what he wore....or...I'm just over thinking it. :confused

Thank you for the conformation about the material and the heads-up on the chains and studs. :thumbsup

I guess next time I'll ask about Dr. Who's shoelaces, or Iron Man's underwear....:unsure

Just a couple more questions....

I'm trying to find a pattern(s) that I can modify to make these....

Is there a name for the style of shoes he's wearing?

sixx123edit.jpg

....is there a name for the "body-suit" he's wearing?

What about the robe, is there a similar style pattern that I could get and modify?

What type of material does his body suit look like?

A heavy spandex?
Lycra, or something else?

Mojo_Turbo

ditto, much more memorable outfit
Memorable is relative....

Which Shout at the Devil years are you referring to?

The S & M with Kiss boots look....

Merchandising-Book-Thecompletehisto.jpg

...the Sleaze Glam meets Mad Max look....

...or the Shout at the Devil - precursor to the Theater of Pain look?

Since I'm new here and I don't want to be a pain in the a$$, is the lack of responses on this due to....

I don't know.

I don't care.

It's too obscure.

I can't be bothered.

I don't know you...etc. :confused

If so, I'll just stop bumping it and let it go.

In my case it's the fact that I think the band and Nikki suck. I really dislike them so I can't be of any help to you. :thumbsdown

If you were making Neil Peart's Exit Stage Left drumkit prop, I would try to add something. :thumbsup

Thanks.

Fair enough, but if you would share any knowledge you had, you'd be helping me, not Motley Crue or, Nikki Sixx.

Plus I haven't been around long enough for you to think I suck...hopefully. :lol

In fact neither of them really could take credit for what they wore, that was the sole responsibility of Ray Brown...

http://www.raybrownfashion.com/

He invented the look of the '80s and '90s, from Alice Cooper to Yngwie_Malmsteen and everyone in between, even EZO

I think it's just something that people don't know a huge amount about. Those who do have any knowledge have dropped by and given their advice, but this isn't a particularly well-researched area.

Sometimes with these more obscure costumes, you need to be the trailblazer and do a lot of the leg work yourself.

It's a cool costume though, so good luck!

If I knew, I'd share! I just don't know. I also don't judge people by the bands they listen to! Well, maybe I do but I don't think you suck for liking that band! :lol

Thanks E-Wan.

I don't really think it has anything to do with the lack of research, because I'm basically asking generalized questions regarding fabrics and patterns and if that's something that people don't know a huge amount about on this forum....well....:unsure

I don't mind doing the leg work, I'm just asking which general direction I should follow.

I just think it's a case of I'm on the outside looking in.

I wouldn't blame you if you did. :lol

I occasionally do use a person's musical taste as a barometer to see if they suck or not...say, like, if they listen to Insane Clown Posse, or a Justin Bieber, nothing good can come of that....nothing

I think it's more that people don't always drop in to threads if they aren't interested in the subject matter. There are a couple of people who are great at identifying fabrics - Darth Mule and Fangs both spring to mind. I'd have a look around some other threads talking about fabrics, then try PMing some of the experts.

That makes sense, I don't like it, but I accept it. :lol
