Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

thanks
thats fantastic help.

is this the advised method for 3.7v or 9v method?

or can it be used for both possibilities?

i think taff83 has used same method but only 1 resistor for 3.7v battery power.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

It honestly depends on what the forward voltage of the resistors you get are.

This way is the safest for the LEDS I linked up from Maplins. And its good practice in electronics to have each circuit almost separate from each other otherwise issues start to occur. If you use 1 Resistor you run the risk of putting too much current through the LEDS and blowing them.

At least this way if one resistor were to go "pop" only that row of resistors would stop working...not all of them.

yes, sounds like the right way to do it.

I went back a few posts

For Jedifyfes wiring diagram

it says to use

  • 3mm diffused LEDs (Red, Green, Yellow) - 4 each per shoe
  • 220 ohm resistors - 3 per shoe
And his are soldered in series according to his tutorial.

here is jedifyfes method of 9v in series

here is taff83s methos for 3.7v in parallel with single resistor

Taff's is still okay. HE is using one resistor yes but its a larger value (100ohm) to drop the current across all the leds. Divide that by 3 and he would get the resistor value he would want to put in each block.

Theres nothing technically wrong with how he has done it, all he is doing is replacing 3 resistors with one large one.

Its better practice to use a resistor per block as per my photo as you are dissipating less heat and current through each resistor meaning you wont burn anything out.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Thanks. ive now got a much better understanding now of what to do on this bit!

Now just got to decide whether to open the inside of the shoe or place everything in the buckle.

bit of a dilemma!
i don't know how hard it will be to access the heel cup leds without opening the inside of the soles under the eva inserts.

Maybe Taff83 knows since he's added EL for the strap and soles, and left the existing led setup on the shoe.

If i can get a clearer idea of the access of the wiring, ill then give it a go.

Ideally, battery and inverter outside of the shoe is preferred in the first instance.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Its always good practice to put the LEDS on the control side (ie power or port if coming from a micro controller).

Sometimes a slight inrush of current with added capacitance and resistance could cause an LED to fail, which with the Resistor being on the ground side would damage the LED. However if the Resistor was on the "control" side then that small capacitance would be dealt with by the resistor.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Oh by the way I chucked some resistors in the post for you.

Some 20 ohm and 10 ohms.

20 ohms if you use 3.7Volt and wire the LEDS in parallel.
10 ohms if you use 9.0Volt and wires the LEDS in series.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

hi
did you get the 2 x AA 3v inverter or the 2 x AAA 3v inverter?

would be interesting to see the difference in size between the boards or whether they are even identical.

I think taff83 got the 2 x AAA inverter, you can see what the board for that one looks like in his picture here.

Another option is this 3v inverter here
Proto-PIC Tiny EL Inverter (EL202) | Proto-PIC.co.uk

its powered by 1 x cr2032 coin cell but im not sure if its got enough of a strong output compared with the AA and AAA 3v inverters. But it would seem this board would be a bit flatter once stripped since its quite thin already.

If that one can power both EL strap and EL for soles, then thats even better, otherwise it seems the 3v AA and 3v AAA inverters are the best options for those in UK like us.

Unless someone has those thin 3v inverters available in europe, it looks like we will have to do with stripping those inverters down!

I went for the 2 X AA inverter, I was tempted by the single coin cell one but didn't want to run the risk of it being underpowered. Plus there's the run time to consider, even if the the single coin cell could power the strap and soles I couldn't imagine it lasting that long.

well my main thinking for the coin cell inverter was simply just the size of the inverter. small as possible is the best scenario.

i think 2 x aaa inverter is fairly small, but not sure how thick it is, i can't tell from taff83s pics.

I think the 2 x aa inverter is probably same or similar.

The cr2032 3v inverter is most likely slightly flatter from what i can see, as that with the plastic box on seems to be about 8mm, but like you say, it may be underpowered in terms of its output.

Since the v2 buckle is not that thick, im trying to get thngs as flat as possible to put them in.

Otherwise, if i can't fit them in, might just have to open the soles up like Jedifyfe.

What are you planning to do? opening the soles and rewiring that way, or having everythng in the buckle?

The only issue im trying to check is whether we can get access to the heel cup led without having to open up the sole from under the eva insert.

if its too difficult to do it from the side of the soles, then will have to consider it.

My preference is to try have everything outside, especially the battery/inverter.

You really shouldn't solder directly to Li-ion battery like that. It's a very good way to weaken the battery and potentially have it fail. You may get away with it a few times but its not something you want to get into the habit of doing. Trust me from first hand experience they can start nasty little fires!

Also if anyone is actually changing the wiring/ adding wiring into the sole of the shoe make sure any wire that's going to be stepped on is of a decent gauge. Using 26 gauge and 30 gauge in shoe projects I have done will always fail. The wire itself will weaken and break in most cases over time.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

I have a question for you guys. If you had my pair of MAG's, how much would you wear them? I am stuck on whether or not to keep my pairs and just wear them out and about.

Thoughts?

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

When mine come im hoping to wear them a lot after doing all the mods.

To work, out to the pub/cinema etc

Although having said that I wonder if 2 pairs, one for display and one too wear would be better

Yeah, 2 pair for sure. I have 4 pair and I am stingy about wearing 1 of the pair too much. :lol

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

One of the reasons I think a lot of people are interested in the these replicas and modding them is because they want to wear them! It's a lot more practical then a $4,000 pair of shoes that you wouldn't want to mess up lol! Should wear them for sure! I wish I knew of a site to get these faster thinking about ordering another pair myself but don't want to wait 2 weeks for them to get here again!! Assuming everyone is getting them from ali??

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

ya Brad keep at least 2 or 3 and wear em. We've wanted them forever we deserve to wear em. enjoy them

I was originally just planning on changing the strap but curiosity got the better of me and I started peeling the sole and side mouldings off!
I'd like to get everything in the buckle, it may be possible to cut some of the inside away to make more room. Though if you take too much out it will lose strength. In that case it will be just mean getting a cloneprops buckle.
Tbh I'm still not 100% decided if i'll put in the el strip in the sole and the side leds I think are pretty good as is (though I have painted the tops of them to give them the RD look when they are switched off)

not much of a choice for me because with these V2's being quite oversized even the smallest size is too big for my feet :$

if they did fit though I'd probably only wear them to select places like the cinema, though knowing my luck it'd rain and I'd end up getting an electric shock off them!
