Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Ha! Means a lot coming from the O.G. himself. I'll continue to update as I go. I tried my hand at the punisher technique with the iron and came up short. Right now just waiting on a few things to arrive.

I'm surprised people are having such a hard time with the laces. Maybe your towel is too thick. It should be about as thick as a heavy cotton tshirt

hi
do you have a picture of your inside of the sole?
how big of a hole have you made inside the shoe under the eva sole inserts?

are you planning to use 9v battery in the sole?

Also, whats the best 9v inverter to get?

Also, if the inside of the sole is not open, how hard is it to place a wire from the back of the shoe to the heel cup location?

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Also, are you guys using any connectors when soldering two different wires to one single wire?

or you just strip the wires, wrap both ends of the other two wires onto the single wire and solder?

you can probably see from my line of questioning that i am pretty useless when it comes to soldering! but hey, everyone has to start somewhere!
thanks

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

I have some resistors lying around here at work not doing anything so your welcome to have a few if you like?

Saves you buying them and being ripped off....no charge for them.

If you PM me your address il stick a dozen in the post for you today.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

YEah that should be good. It has a 3KV output so should be comfortable with driving the panel bright enough.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

yeah, im trying to find anyone in UK/europe who have these, there is not even one single place online!

if anyone knows, feel free to share. it seems not many places in UK have got small thin inverters, they mostly have the bulky ones.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

You asked about soldering multiple wires together?

First strip the 2 wires like so..

IMAG1715.jpg

Twist them both together (It will give a stronger join then just soldering them together without twisting them...not too mention it looks ugly) The nwrap them around each other

IMAG1716.jpg

IMAG1717.jpg

Tin them up with some solder. You may have to leave the Iron on there for a while to get enough heat to flow through the wires as it is quite a big mass.

IMAG1719.jpg

Trim it down a bit in length as you dont need all that excess...

IMAG1721.jpg

Then solder the 2 wires (red in my case) to your single wire (black)

IMAG1722.jpg

If it were me i would add some thin Kynar heatshrink to the join but you dont have too.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Thanks for the pictures, should be really helpful when coming to soldering time!

well im trying to find inverters for both methods first and still not sure whether to open up the inside of the sole to place a battery/inverter there, or to use a new ankle buckle and store everything there.

i have multiple pairs, so might try both methods on different pairs. My preference is the 3v buckle method.

And I saw this 3v inverter.
<IN>3Volt / 3-6 Foot Inverter at Thatscoolwire.com

i can't find this anywhere in the UK, and the shipping from US is quite expensive.

I'm thinking of that inverter since its all enclosed and looks fairly tiny in height and width so could easily fit behind buckle, and then all you would need is a battery.

The alternative is simply to go for those AA battery pack inverters and just ripping off the plastic covers to leave just the open board.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

yeah, im still hopefull that this inverter once stripped would fit in the back of the v2 white ankle buckle.

can then solder a new switch going to it, and use a ps3 3.7v battery or any mobile battery to it,

maybe i should get the parts and see if i can make them fit.

as long they aren't too thick, they may be able to be squeezed in that buckle with some cutting out.

I'm surprised though that nobody is selling those thin inverters in the Uk or Europe. The postage prices from the US are extortionate. $51 postage!!

hey thanks man.
these are good for the 3v setup with single resistor?

that would be fantastic.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

the only other 3v inverter i can see in the UK seems to be this one

Proto-PIC Tiny EL Inverter (EL202) | Proto-PIC.co.uk

powered by a single coin cell cr2032.
I'm guessing this inverter won't have a strong output in comparison to the AA battery inverter?

the coin cell one says upto 50cm of EL Wire, so im guessing EL Tape or EL Cutouts might be difficult?

that's exactly what I'm planning on doing, those tiny inverters are nice but not at that cost. Once stripped the AA inverter I'm hoping will be fairly small, I just now ordered two off eBay and they only cost £3.28 (shipped) each!

hi
did you get the 2 x AA 3v inverter or the 2 x AAA 3v inverter?

would be interesting to see the difference in size between the boards or whether they are even identical.

I think taff83 got the 2 x AAA inverter, you can see what the board for that one looks like in his picture here.

Another option is this 3v inverter here
Proto-PIC Tiny EL Inverter (EL202) | Proto-PIC.co.uk

its powered by 1 x cr2032 coin cell but im not sure if its got enough of a strong output compared with the AA and AAA 3v inverters. But it would seem this board would be a bit flatter once stripped since its quite thin already.

If that one can power both EL strap and EL for soles, then thats even better, otherwise it seems the 3v AA and 3v AAA inverters are the best options for those in UK like us.

Unless someone has those thin 3v inverters available in europe, it looks like we will have to do with stripping those inverters down!

I'm sure like 15 pages back that jedifyfe posted a pic of the inner sole, if not I may be able to take one later. To run the wires through I just used a thin metal rod and put it down the back of the shoes and the wire came through the bottom with a lil tough love. If the inside of the sole is not open I don't think you have any chance of getting to the back ankle buckle without making a hole somewhere. Still on the fence about 3v or 9v. I'll let ya know once I make a decision. FYI I am a rookie at all of this too, I'm just learning as I go. Haha. As for that thin 9v inverter from coolight.com, it seems they are up the road from me. I'm gonna go by tomorrow and see about grabbing a pair. I'll update as I go.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

I knocked up a quick PCB to try and show you airair what it should look like..

Lit up

IMAG1724.jpg

And the Wiring of the LEDS...

IMAG1727.jpg

Hopefully you can see how that works.

I would start by building one "block" first. So you solder all 4 positive wires together, then all 4 negatives together.

Then add the 20ohm resistor to one end of the positives connections (dont connect to 3.7V just yet)

Then build up all the other circuits the same as above, And finally link all the negative wires of EACH bank of leds together (should have 2 connections) and the sides of the resistors that will go to 3.7v (again 2 connections).

Then add your power supply wires of 3.7V to the resistors, and finally your ground wire. All should be good after that.
