Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

For all those wanting to do the Nike logo strap, pay attention ;)

I've found a local guy who can print great quality black vinyl logos that are precut like the ones found with the markpoons. His will also have a front clear layer over the top to help keep dust and water away from the EL. They would be ready to peel and stick. :thumbsup Pics tomorrow hopefully.

List of names for those interested please.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

I'll be able to have a price tomorrow, but it really won't be expensive...it can't be really just for a few logos each! I'll update the thread as soon as I get mine in hand tomorrow with pics etc. :thumbsup

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Also when wired in series, if you have a bad solder (dry joint) or if one LED goes out, they ALL go out. In parallel, only the fault does not light.

Hi
so using Jedifyfe 9v battery method, you can do it in parallel also with single resistor?
and in taff83 methd, you also do it in parallel with single resistor?

could you make a new diagram with all 3 rows of the leds, when wiring in parallel if possible?

this stuff is new to me, so i would like to get it right first time when doing the soldering.

I understand the series method, which is what Jedifyfe seems to have used, each row of leds is soldered + to - then - to + with a resistor on each end.

But would like to see a full diagram of the parallel method with single resistor also.

i found taff83s picture of his method, i think he used parallel with single resistor.

So using the Jedifyfe 9v method of 3 resistors and each row in series, means that if one led goes, everything will go?

so its always best to use parallel for these leds?

thanks

What power are you going to be running it from? 9Volt? or 3.7 (or whatever the batteries are)

well id happy to use either method because both 9v and 3.7v methods mean having the battery in the sole of the v2 as the existing buckle can't hold either.

The alternate method is if using a different ankle buckle which can house the 3.7v battery /inverter inside it, meaning won't have to open the inside of the sole, just the sides to wire the EL soles.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Depending on which one you use we can't tell you the best way to wire them up..

If using 9V then series wire the leds.

If using 3.7v Then parallel is better.

I am doing you a schematic for both of those options...il upload them in a second.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Can you make this photo out?? Im having issues getting it any bigger

This is PARALLEL for 3.7 volts

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

question for jedifyfe

when you placed the 9v battery in the box space in the sole, when you put your eva sole insert back over this space, does the battery tend to move around much?

also, how big is the hole where you can place the wiring to the EL for soles?

It fits snug in there, so it doesn't move around at all.

The wires sit ontop of the battery, just like the way it comes. I add an extra layer of foam to the foam inserts, just for added protection. :thumbsup

so you glued an extra eva foam layer to the inserts? does it make for a tighter fit? or not much difference?

still deciding whether to go for the inverter/battery in a new ankle buckle, rather than opening up the inside under the eva inserts.

How much access to the bottom of the sole is there once you've opened up the side of the shoe to replace the leds with el cutouts?

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Have you bought any replacement LEDS yet airair??

If so links to each of them...mainly to check that the resistor values we are recommending are safe to use

no not yet
im going to go on weekend to get some

is there specific ones to get for either 3.7v or 9v scenarios?

i think its 3mm diffused leds to get?
Which ones is taff83 using?

since he's gone with a 3.7v setup, whatever he's got, we can make a list of the correct items to get.

There nearest place i have to get some leds / resistors is Maplin.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

If your going to maplins ideally these would be best

3mm LEDs : 3mm LEDs : Maplin Electronics

With those LEDS they have a slightly lower forward voltage so a resistor of around 15-20 ohms would be safer to use.

You will strugle to find those in Maplin without being mugged off big time in price. IF you do get them from Maplin then get either 18 or 22 ohm 1/4 watt resistors (250mw).

Maplin charge 7 quid for a pack of "starter resistors" which is a rip off.

MCF 0.25W 15R - MULTICOMP - RESISTOR, 0.25W 5% 15R | Farnell United Kingdom

95p for 50 of them! If you want il see if I have any at work and I could send them you? Il drop a reply in here tomorrow if you like?

Edited to add Okay after looking at the specs of the leds further I have revised the resistor value you might want to use.

I have to admit it Maplin is quite expensive for what they are selling x)

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Its handy for the hobbyist but there range is very limited and is overpriced.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Has anyone ever tried out the hydrophobic shoe spray? Im trying to find ways of protecting the shoes other than being careful where you walk because in the end they ARE still just shoes so I dont want to be over protective of them by my concern is discoloration from the spray but I have no experience with this spray. Any thoughts?
