to this, is not easy or inexpensive... ;)

Hey what size are they and are they sold yet?

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

i'm using 3v setup, ye i use 100ohm to be safe but the brightness with and without it is roughly the same so its all good, but i will try lower resistor

Got the switch working!!!

see below amended diagram, i am sooo happy at the moment seeing the EL and LEDs all come on at once with the press of a button, going to move the switch from the inverter to my desired place and then this is good to use.

Hopefully the ps3 batteries arrive tonight and i can see how long all the lights stay on for but 1800mah thats twice as much as any 9v battery ;)

but as i have 2500mAh nokia batteries i will use them so i get the most light time as possible on one charge.

Now I just want to start on a new pair of mags and hide the battery and inverter in the sole and just have the switch accessible without taking the strap off and getting access that way and also just have the dc charger in the buckle ;)

EDIT - tested the resistance and only 10 ohm... So I've chucked the resistor and soldered the LEDs straight up... Going to leave it for a few hours to see if the LEDs dim, keep you all posted but basically if this pulls through we don't need resistors :p

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Yeah you will probably be fine runnign them stright off 3.0 - 3.7 v

You actually have your LEDS in parallel which is best for this set-up as each led will get 3V. Id still be inclined to put an RESISTOR on EACH of your + inputs to the banks of the LEDs...just something small like 10ohm...will help drop your current draw slightly and hopefully not impact on brightness. Means you will get more life out of the battery.

Up to you though of course!

Edited as I put led instead of resistor

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Thanks for that Rich, appreciate your feedback mate.

Right the no resistor test went well... For the first two hours lol? Gt one led out, lucky it was a test led setup. I'm now going to use resistors again as I had no problem, will run the battery to death to see how long I get from this set up as at the moment that is the main thing.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Hey taff83 I wasn't as lucky as you bro, my 3.7 volt ran everything, but my EL was very dim, first with a small inverter then with a larger one. I'm thinking 1 of 2 things 1)I need to get the just right inverter or 2) our batteries, while both 3.7v may have different juice. My battery says 3.7v 1300mah 4.81wh.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

The stock one that came with the EL sheet and the other one I had was a tiny one I had from a previous project. The tiny one is only good for the strap so I already kind of figured that was no use, but the stock one is a bulky dc12v. Here is something else interesting, I ran them with this big inverter from the wall at 3v and while still a tad dim, it was brighter than my 3.7 battery.

sorry for sounding stupid!:confused
but for your led wiring, what exactly needs to be soldered, do you have a picture of the back of it?

thanks

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Brad I tried ironing the lace area but had no luck :confused

Did you use a iron that you would use to iron clothes with?

I use a regular clothes iron, set on high with steam function. Believe me, the shoes get very hot and I press down hard.

If you'd be willing to cut into the soles to make more room for a battery it would really open up some doors lol. Get some 6,000mah li-ion up in there! I am sure you already know this but all 3.7v batteries are really like 4.2 when fully charged which can make a difference and effect the LED life greatly. Since LEDS are normally like 3.6v, then RED LEDS are even less around 1.8-2v I think. Also 1 more thing, you could use solder a piece of wire across the inverter switch then you can hook the new switch for everything straight to the battery which would probably be best I would think. Good work man! Can't wait til the rest of my parts get here! Btw you used a cr2032 3v inverter right? hope so because I ordered 2 of those.

It will be because the battery can't take the inrush current as well as a wall socket one.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Can anyone clarify?
is there any actual difference in output between these 3v inverters?

I would love to know, because if only certain 3v inverters are able to power the wiring setup, it would be great to have a consensus on which ones are the best to get.

1.)
this one is a small circular inverter by itself

2.)
this one is a rectangular thin inverter by itself

3.)
this one is a rectangular slightly thick inverter by itself

4.)
this one is a square inverter by itself

5.)
this one comes fixed with a space for 2 mini coin cells - ag13

6.)
this one comes fixed with a space for 1 single coin cells - CR2032.

There also might be a few more.

If anyone knows, feel free to share info!

I think Taff83 used a 2 x AA - 3v inverter and stripped off the plastic outer. I'm curious to know which of the above ones is suitable for use with the custom nike mag wiring setup. Each seem to say they have different lengths, but since the EL Strap cutout and the EL Sole cutouts are not very big in area, I'm hoping someone can clarify which 3v inverter is suitable from the list above.

Kingtheydon, if you could recommend one out of the above list, what would you suggest using?
Some are without battery connections or switches, while others have both.
thanks

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

From experience I can tell you the 1st one is too small, the third is pretty large so it'll be tough to fit it anywhere, the 2 that take mini cells won't light both panels enough, and the others that take as batteries will be we fit anywhere. I'd say from that list the 2nd one is your best bet.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Well, here's the Nike logo for those interested. Just got sticky back printing paper and print a pages worth off in one go, then use a blade to cut them down carefully. Saves having to pay for them laser cutting. I have put celotape over mine to not only protect the EL, but to give a nice shine over the logos like the real Mags.

(The Nike logos aren't perfectly in line/professional looking but who cares when you cut the paper to pieces anyway)... ;) I was in a rush at work! Massive props to markpoon for being kind enough to send me the logo.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Taff83, if everything is working with your setup, could you post up a final diagram to follow like your previous one?

as in what resistors, etc required.

I'm trying to decide whether to go with a 3v inverter (from 2 x AA inverter), 3.7vbattery with dc charging socket and new switch

or

9v inverter, 9v battery without any charging (like jedifyfe).

Like you guys said, the lithium battery at 1800mah or bigger would last longer than a single 9v battery.

Since both options require opening up the V2 soles, i'm just trying to decide which is the ideal solution.

hi
i wanted to ask,
when you removed the leds from the v2s,

what did you use to make the new backboard piece from? thin cardboard or foam?

whats best thing to use if removing this piece? thanks
