Nike Mag V2 Mod Discussion (Page 58 Shopping List)

For anyone who has/uses photoshop. I've made a PSD file of the RD Mag's where each part of the shoe is its own layer....therefore you are able to change the colours and create your own custom mags pretty easily.

Good for people creating their own custom colours who want to see what they would turn out like, and also just fun for anyone to play around with.

If anyone wants the PSD file, just let me know :)

Here is something I was playing around with as a potential design, if I decide to make my own uppers (with a little after effects added)

hell yeah! I like it. The MAGs need more colourways. Black and white, blue and grey, so many possibilities.....Maybe the 'Mr Fusions' by airair could get recolours.... even if I have to crack out the cloth dye and do it myself. ;)
Have you seen how many colourways exist of the Air Max 90? It can easily be done. I wouldnt even mind if a version was released without the lights, like having a midsole material type like the V1's, nice and spongy as long as they looked more like the RD's. Just have 2 solid aqua coloured peices under the clear outsole's side.

I'm excited about the new MAGs this year, but we're just getting shafted again. Limited release at outrageous prices. Up yours Nike. I am praying for airairs MAGs to get off the ground.

I hope you're right in the first refusal bit! There's no way in hell Nike would ever mass release this. The returns department would be overrun with idiots who don't understand these electronics like us guys. They would rag them on, jump around in them, run in puddles etc. Nike know this, they aren't stupid. The best that people can hope for is a smaller variation of Mags but the power laces would only be like Blakes which is impressive, but still nothing like how they are seen in the movie. They don't react fast enough for the sound effects either.

Yeah that is what is possible when you have two stage hands pulling on the straps. No way ever, will an electric version work like that.
If they even get a true powered lace system up and running, I doubt it will even be a high top. Note the recent "PowerLace shoe at Kickstarter is not a hi-top even though the original idea for the pressure plate in the heel was.

NIKE's Patent shows a clever toothed belt system with limited motion. Note how high the laces sit in the movie shoe for that uber cool power lace sequence.

That ankle strap of an active system needs to be almost half as long again as the length of the passive version. Where it is going to go? There simply is NO ROOM to roll it up in the ankle buckle and still store electronics in there as well.

As you can see in the picture above, it doesn't even reach the Ankle Buckle on the left shoe and his foot is already in the right shoe and that strap is also quite a bit longer than the one on the left shoe because it is an SPX shoe just for that scene.

Just put a pair of mine up for sale in the Junkyard. They have the steam toe slim done and a couple LEDS are not working but they're relat cheap...

Update on the rubber coating on the mid-sole. MEH! Am I happy with the results? Yes and no. Will have to see how they wear. I guess the part I am not 100% happy with right now is because I had to keep the stuff off my Heel Cup lettering and that part does not look the best at this time. Soon I will make new letters and be able to fill in the gaps. Adding pigment is cool because you can change the colour of the rubber and I will have to get some AQUA now to make myself a larger MAG. I already have white to redo the NIKE. I also like the way this stuff strings, so splatter made from aqua rubber might even be possible. I would need to bag the shoe first though.

On the positive side:

1. Once dry, this stuff bends and flexes the same as the mid-sole and appears to have bonded really well this time. The first attempt didn't go so well as I mixed too much pigment (should be just just 5%/Vol) in and this caused the elastomer not to set properly leaving it very tacky and soft. Some of it actually came away on my thumb when I pressed really hard. So I had to clean (scrape) that off and re-apply with a proper 5% mix ratio. I also made it slightly darker this round as it set slightly lighter and that was a touch too light for my tastes. This has dried close shade of the grey of the vinyl paint I used last time, so pretty happy about that.

2. You can build this stuff up. I made way too much grey pigment, so I am able to make several small batches of grey rubber. I have been attempting to "fatten the arse" of my MAGs and once I make new letters, I can build up the heel cup to make it bulge. So that will be a part of project I will be doing soon.

3. Because the clear elastomer is UV stabilized, this won't turn yellow anytime soon as I have simply mixed the grey pigment into the clear to make a new grey rubber.

4. This part is actually DIY as you don't need a Vacuum Chamber for this part. The first batch was run through the Vacuum Chamber but because you are applying such a thin layer, any bubbles created during the mix won't be there when it cures anyway or they pop as you apply this to the surface. Vacuuming such a small amount (20 grams) only shortened the pot life and given you only have 15 minutes to apply this, you don't want to waste any time pulling bubbles that will be gone anyway after it cures. Cure time is 6 hours BTW.

5. My mid-soles have been cracking over the past 12 months between the front oval part and the rear part and I was able to get the stuff into the cracks that have been causing me grief. Previously, I would fill the cracks with superglue and after a few wears, a new crack would appear between the next to the glued crack. Hopefully this fixes that for good.

The not so good aspects:

1. I've lost the details of the texture and not sure how I can get that back short of mixing sand or something similar into the rubber and layering on another coat. Because this is self leveling, even when stamped by a texture copy (I have made a small one for this purpose from silicone rubber), the stuff just levels itself anyway.

2. It is too shiny right now. I hope I can buff this back with wet-n-dry to take the shine off. Unlike paint, if I sand this too far, it is not going to change colour as the grey is right the way through the cross-section (that part is actually a plus).

3. If you get any on the cloth, you are stuffed as it bites in and you will NEVER get it out. I found that a small paint brush allowed me to work the stuff right up to the cloth and I don't think I got any on the cloth. As it goes into a gel state, it seems to be slightly easier to get to stick where you want it as it no longer runs (that is probably a plus too).

Also my 1KG (I will call it CYAN) "aqua" GITD powder has turned up, so I will be making a few NIKE strap logos that actually fit into the cutouts. I may even be able to cast it directly into the cutout for a 100% perfect fit. The only thing I need to do before hand is get some logos reverse printed so that there is a protective layer over the print. Now this stuff can be mixed in as high as 15%/Vol and I will post results of that soon for giggles.

Interested in seeing how this turns out.

Wow this is a very long thread. I customize sneakers as a hobby (@jontimbre IG) and was wondering what modifications to do with my HC pair. Then I came across this website, got me very interested. Wanting to work on a V2 now, any chance the V3 will be up soon? :D

From what I have read so far, you guys mod the V2 to get brighter lights and glowing NIKE logo? I'm pretty sure there's a lot more so I would appreciate it if you guys could enlighten me. Thank you!

See page 200 of this topic for a list of things to do.

Also, there is a HC specific topic.

This is coming out pretty interesting.

This is a nice colour. It is still inside the plastic bag, so I opened the jar or green just to compare the colours each glow. My phone camera picked this up with no issue at all, so given the eye is way more sensitive, it is safe to assume this is pretty bright. Probably not as bright as EL and certainly no where near as bright as LED, but for an alternate solution to making thing glow in the dark, this is pretty neat stuff.

When mixed to the maximum of 15%/Vol, the mixture takes on a pale yellow look and it will be interesting to see what colour it cures at. The powder itself is slightly yellowish as well, so this might be a case of it is what it is. Not sure if adding a drop of blue pigment or even white pigment can help here. Something for me to test later I guess.

Yeah, that looks the same color as what I have while glowing.

Sounds about right, my paint dried to a kind of pale yellow or green. From head-height most would probably perceive it as white when not glowing.

Sorry for the crap phone snap, but it is now 1am here.

I'd like to see the whole sole cast in this stuff :)

Strap logos are curing now.
