thanks bro, appreciate it! I flattened the laces by using a iron. But I put a wet tshirt over the laces to get the most amount of heat without damaging the material.
Wetting the tee shirt is an excellent idea. The tea-towel I used for the toe box slim got quite a bit darker by the time I was done due to it getting burned, so a wet cloth would only increase the steam factor.
When I was running the wires for the lights, I found that I could wiggle a plastic chopstick between the layers of the fabric. I also found that it could assist in separating the layers near the laces. Although I never pushed it all the way, I think you could get enough lift for the laces to all but disappear. The shoe might take on the slump look of the original 89 movie shoe.

You did a cut and glue toe slim? It has the "sock type" look to it which is cool.
Makes me want to break out a can of the grey vinyl dye I have here and add the lighter grey to my mid-soles. I don't have any turquoise enamel paint on hand though.
