Great job.

Its too bad the paint is cracking, you can see the darker grey underneath.

I'm testing some acrylic paint mixed with some mediums for hardening the paint on some grey test pairs i stripped.
Going to see if that works.

Yeah, it was bound to happen. Luckily this is my knockabout pair. I have 3 other pair that I have yet to mod. Also my buddy who paints custom shoes is going to do the midsoles on his pair and I should have my other pairs done as well. His paints don't crack or rub off. Unfortunately he won't share his secret paints. Oh well. Good luck to all.

Yeah.
I was investigating, there isn't any real paint which will stick onto the grey rubber midsoles permanently.

I already asked several shoe manufacturers, and they use polyurethane paint in the process which is heated in an oven, and they have to be a thin layer of paint evenly spread.

Kind of like how the turquoise paint on the Mag lettering is done on the knockoffs, a thin layer which is fairly hard to scrape off.

These knockoff mags seem to be TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane Rubber) according to one person I showed them to.

On your black pair, I think you said it was Angelus paint used, if you scratch that with your finger, does it come off easily? if not, its probably been mixed or glossed over with a medium (hardener). The problem in the process is the adhesion of acrylic paint to the grey rubber of the midsoles. Most paints don't adhere well to the grey rubber surface.

Almost all people who are customising shoes use the angelus or another similar acrylic paint mixed or glossed over with a medium (hardener).

The clear soles on your black pair which were dyed yellow, i'm not sure if that dye can be used on your grey midsoles as the clear soles and the grey midsoles are different rubber it seems. It may be worth trying to see if the grey midsole can be dyed, but I doubt it.

I had to re-do my new tongues after wearing them out as they tended to creep up. They also squeaked when I walked :S I had not properly secured them to the base of the tongue, so they crept up under the laces exposing the original tongue and I found myself having to pull them down a few times yesterday.

So last night I unpicked the stitching and re-did them. Now they stitched to the toe end of the original tongue. I am still not 100% happy with this and think the only way to fix this is to cut out the original tongue leaving an inch wide tab to sew to (upside down and facing the toe) that can be folded back and cover the stitches. The original pattern is made for a scratch build, not a retrofit, so I had to modify that to make this work.

When wearing, they seem to be about 1/2 taller than they should due to the original tongue being stretchy. I guess once I walk around they would settle and pull back down (which is why I wanted them extended in the first place) leaving that "just sticking over the strap look.

I've also stuffed a neoprene insert into the top part to help hold its shape and stop the wrinkling I was getting before.

Air air, the only light grey paint I have found that is both flexible and will stick to EVERYTHING is a 2PAK poly primer used for painting cars. This stuff is nasty with the fumes it gives off whilst drying. I use it to seal MFD on speaker enclosures I build and it fully seals the end grain leaving a polymer coating over the entire box.

I spilled some on a shirt a while back and it did not peel after drying. I could wear the shirt (in my workshop) and it flexed perfectly and I don't think it would crack as it never did on the shirt. It is about the right shade of grey too. The stuff is about $50 for a 500ml tin and you have a pot life of about 20mins before it sets. You really want to do this outside in the open air and leave the shoes near a window for about 12 hours after as well.

They look good!!
Awesome work

Good to finally meet you today. Yeah the car is very cool. I got taken for drive in it a couple weeks back.

Funny how even though we only met today, we've communicated on this forum and on Facebook for months...ahh how the internet makes the world a smaller place :)

So maybe we need to organize a MAG modding party. I have two other pairs to co as well as my wear pair. There are at least 5 pairs being worn around Brissie now.
