If you buy some special Velcro that is NOT the normal Velcro but rather a rubber version and glue it inside the strap that touches the tongue, it holds it in place.

Are you referring to stick on? Velcro comes in two types - stick on (self adhesive) and sew on. The stick on does tend to feel more rubberized that the sew on. It is a good idea though.

Question #1: I'm peeling back away the ankle bubble sections and ready to remove the stock LED panel. Do I just simply cut the wire connecting this or am I supposed to remove the wire altogether somehow?

AnkleBubble1_zpsf45dd4aa.jpg

Question #2: Where do I make the incision to slip the wires for my new LED panel into? Do I just drill into the material on the side of the shoe behind the ankle bubble area? Or am I cutting thread anywhere to reveal areas that are already open?

Interior1_zpsddf64321.jpg

Q1: yes just cut the wires. They don't need to be removed

Q2: remove the insert, cut along the bottom of the inside fabric, seperate the two layers of interior fabric and make the incision for the ankle lights from the outside.

OK after reading all 127 pages I can finally post !!!!! I have wanted to make a power lace version of the replicas for a while now. I am so thankful to all you guys that have done all the mods and great thanks to the Modfather AKA jedifyfe AKA Brad ( I followed you on instagram) also great work by many others in the threads. I know this had be talked about but for my first post I would like to give the people that have or are getting the mags but the soles are still grey keep them from turning with this 303 Products 30350 Aerospace Protectant - 32 oz. Amazon.com: 303 Products 30350 Aerospace Protectant - 32 oz.: Automotive Its a rubber safe UV protestant that you can apply maybe once a month or so should do the trick. I am also going to use the sea glo and blue die to make mine icy blue tint. I am going to use the 9v power and make it recharge. OK so that is the part that we have all been able to learn to do from the thread. The second part is how to make the auto laces. I have thought about it and I am going to use a custom CNC like mechanism to pull laces tight, program a controller board to turn a high torque servo motor and a sort of pulley system. That is the plan anyway. I have to get the mags I have the mark poons and I have a single left shoe of the V2 that my cuz gave me to take apart to see what would fit and how things would work but I have to order all the parts for the V2 conversion mod the V2's and the extra electronics plus make the custom CNC to put in the shoe . I am telling you guys because like the Modfather I too want to share how I am making my shoes work I will of course also offer the service but I think it only fair to share with you how I am doing it. I will post pics as I start working on them I think I will start after Xmas is done.

I just wanted to as couple questions and get feedback on setup.

What would be the best setup?

1. Pressure sensor in heal that would turn on light and tighten laces when heel of foot presses down. With on\off kill button in place of the current button location?

2. Pressure sensor in heal that would tighten laces when heel of foot presses down. With on\off for lights in place of the current button location. With second button in the opposite side of shoe from current location for ON\OFF kill button?

3 Two buttons no pressure sensor. One that turns on lights and laces and the other a on\off kill button.

Or something else that you think would be better I am open to suggestions. Just no RF, IR, or blue tooth. not enough space for break out boards in shoe.

hear are some tear down pics of me working out size and stuff on V2's View attachment 264008View attachment 264009View attachment 264010

I removed the upper so that I would have more freedom to mod things and hide in sole.

WOW, do they actually make motors with enough talk that small? Your link doesn't work by the way. Hey if this could be done, there are more than just BTTF fans that would want "power laces" on their shoes.

If you look at the grey v2 soles, there is not much space in there aside from the rectangle hollow space. I assume you will be drilling some of the grey sole out to fit in any servo/motor and circuit board?

Also, do you plan to have the Strap Light and the ankle leds/sole lights all light up in go? or the sole lights/ankle leds and then the strap light?

You can't really replicate the way the movie version does it, as its all a figment of movie making magic. We see the laces get tightened, then the strap get tightened miraculously then a few seconds later, you can see its been velcro'd into place.

So do you plan to have an alternate white leather strap which doesn't have velcro?
so that you can tighten it as part of the laces system?
or is just the laces which are tightened?

If you were to have just the laces tightened, I assume you would put your foot in, and soon as it touches the heel, it would tighten the laces, yet the strap would not be fully on (as it needs to be velcro'd on through the white buckle slit.)

It will be interesting to see how it can be made so that you don't have to use the velcro to tighten the strap.

Part of the illusion of the movie is that the laces, then the strap gets tightened, with the lights turning on instantly as soon as they are tightened.

The only way to replicate the movie illusion is to have a white strap that is not velcro'd or somehow modified so thats its part of a tightening system.

cavx I am not sure why the link did not work for you it works for me but here is a second attempt. If that does not work for you can find it on amazon or just google it if you haven't already 303 Products 30350 Aerospace Protectant - 32 oz.
airair I would have to remove some area in the sole but not too much. I plan to have all the lights com on at the same time then everything lace. But you are correct it will not be just like the movie magic version. The laces and strap will not be that long when they are loose. As far as the strap I plan on taking the par that is usually fixed to the back white buckle part and feeding it though this will give 1 to 2 inches of extra play when loose whie the velco side still functional. I have attacehed a bad schech of what I mean to try to give you a visual. Sorry for the bad artwork, we can't all be da vinci ya know :D. IMAG0054.jpg

cool.
so do you plan to reuse the existing v2 grey uppers? and run some laces through them?

Also, this servo setup, do you have to program this using a computer or is it all mechanical?

can't wait to see it!

airair I plan is to reuse the V2 uppers and running new laces of a leatherette material matching the strap and covering the tong with the same material. I am going to use the material to raise the tong as we saw it is too short from the great comparison that Jedifyfe gave us of the RD's and the V2's and the original movie versions. This will stop the fuzz and the fit problem with the tong when being worn.
The servo setup will require a board to be programed to control its functions and the input from the buttons and such. The rest of the setup will be mechanical. I am excited too airair !!!! I want to start working on it but the wife will kill me if I did. I have not even put up Christmas decorations yet.

If you watch this clip, you will see the strap gets tightened first, then the laces. What is interesting about this is when I made that mock up pair, the laces would not pull tight unless the ankle strap was tight first.

yes you're right. i got it the wrong way round.

jedifyfe, by chance have you posted how to make the cardboard inserts the real mags use to help preserve the shape? I've searched and didn't come up with anything. Can you help me out? Thanks.

Ok, I glued the wire tape to the non-light side of the panel.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a70/michaelcabrera/Nike Air Mag/ELstrapE_zpse34736e5.jpg

However, the EL is still not lighting up. Where I'm confused on is where are the attachment points on the EL to glue on? Are they on the edges of the EL sheet where the alternating black squares are (yellow arrows)? Or is it strictly where there is pre-attached foil metal where the metal prongs protrude out of (purple arrows)? Something doesn't seem right to me in glueing the wire tape to those black square areas because there doesn't seem to be a metal to metal connection. :confused

It looks like the EL sheet you have has a protective coating on the "terminals". The black areas are where you should attach them but they should look grey.

I have the same problem as mcabrera1275! :cry
How can i transform this black area into a grey area ?

It looks like your el sheet is only usable where the metal pins are.
If you want you can test whether the rest of the connection points are usable by using a battery and inverter and just touching the black areas with the positive and negative wires.

If you have a coin cell inverter you can test using that.

You might also want to check if the black side is peelable or removable.

I have el sheets similar to the one you have, but mine have 4 connection points but nothing else is usable as the back of it is covered with a protective layer and there are no other positive and negative points like on your el sheet.

It looks like yours maybe usable if the black covering can be removed.

The other ones I have got from ebay have had 4 connection points and many other positive and negative points which can be used as they have no protective layer on the back.

These are more floppy than the other ones I have which have the protective layer on the back.

Yes. air air is correct. You want to look for Cuttable EL with Tabs. The EL sheets with pins are specifically for using the pin terminals and can't use the other tabs. Usually they have a laminated back. Look for Unlaminated sheets.
IxMAGICx1, I just used thick white card stock and folded it and taped it. Pretty simple. I might see if I can make a template from my real magS insets if you want.

Thanks man! I'll just give it a shot. No need to make a template if it really is just that simple.

This is probably covered, but, is there anyone selling just custom made EL Straps for them? I already bought all the items needed for making it, and plan on making my own - and getting more into other customization, but am curious to know if I can BUY one already made. JUST the EL strap, to replace the flimsy one?

The member who45 used to sell them but I don't think he does anymore. I think he charge like $150-$200 for the straps.

Unless you are going to power the strap via its own inverter/battery (which is what the people who bought Who45's straps were doing), it will look off if you have just the strap in EL lighting, and the rest of the lights in the incorrect leds.
