Nike Mag V2 Mod Discussion (Page 58 Shopping List)

Yeah, the 2011 official ones have no border, the Nike text is full size and fits the strap area fully.

On my first few conversions, my Nike logo's had a bigger border area on them. Now I've reduced them slightly each time, but could probably reduce them even more on the next few so when it comes to glueing them down, there will be minimal problems in fitting the text perfectly.

The original movie pair versions seem to have a slight border around them in comparison to the 2011 release.

Also if you notice, the Nike Text on the 2011 official release is different to the ones on the movie version which used the standard Nike text font.

The movie version used the standard Nike Font text to arrange the letters with just the bottom of the K touching the E,
whereas the 2011 version the K is joined at the top and bottom to the E, and the K is fatter near the top than the normal Nike font's K letter.

See for yourself here:

I'm using the standard Nike Font lettering, so mine is the same as the movie version, but I may try some with the 2011 style text arrangement.

I did, as I was able to re-glue it with the slight curve to the strap. However, the EL sheet placement was slightly off through the exposed trapezoid area. This was caused because it shifted. The lesson I learned for next time is that I won't put black electrical tape on the sides of the EL sheet as it makes it too thick to glue down the strap sides, thus causing the shifting. I also found that the Loctite Flexible Fabric glue works really well in lieu of the Super 77 spray.

Brad, I've noticed on the authentic Mags that the Nike logo on strap actually doesn't have a visible border around the text and actually goes all the way to the edge on the trapezoid area. If that's the case, when I redo this, I won't have to worry about shifting as the text will go towards the edges and a border won't ever be exposed. Can you please confirm?

Thanks,
Michael

anyone found a product that's the right colour for the V2 midsole repaint when they go yellow? Probably need a fabric paint, so it won't flake and come off. I've bought 2 greys, but one is too dark and the other too light. Suppose I could mix it to get the right colour, but just hoping there might be a 'right colour' out there that someone here might know of.
Thanks!

i'm looking too for which type of paint to use as I need to respray a pair.

i'm not sure what type of paint is best to respray the midsoles.

I don't know if standard Spray Paints like Rustoleum will be ok for these soles.

Which fabric paint have you come across?

The midsoles are fairly flexible rubber, so i'm trying to work out which paint which would be best which won't crack easily. Whether that means mixing some latex or something, i'm not sure.

If anyone does know, feel free to share.

I've tried this one from Ebay:
Jacquard Textile Color 137 Neutral Gray 2 25oz Tshirt Fabric Ink Airbrush Paint | eBay
it's too light. The other grey that looked close was from an Australian car parts chain called Super Cheap Auto, the product was a spray can called dupli-colour. Logic tells me fabric paint should be good for this - as if it's meant to go on fabric which bends much more than a midsole ever would, it shouldn't be a problem for the MAGs.

well I need a good project for the winter, and I think its finally time to pull the trigger on these and start modding them up. since you all have had pretty extensive experience with these by now, what size should I get if I usually wear an 11? I seem to recall they run a size small. they have no padding in them, and id prolly replace the insole and wear thicker socks for comfort, but I also don't want them to be loose around the ankle and rub either. so im hoping yall can help me decide between a sz 10 or 11? =)

Hey Lore.
I usually wear a US 10 and ordered 9.5's in MAGs.
They seem to run slightly big. With a pair of Ultrasport insoles over the top of the insoles they come with, they're pretty comfy.

though if you're in Australia (which your post doesn't say) you can get them from Woolworths or Big W.
If you want a size comparison, heres a photo of size 10 Reebok Pump Bringback vs size 9.5 MAG V2 replica. :)

Good luck with your mods! (I've been a bit slack and haven't modded mine as you can see)

If it is the same stuff I used on my V1 Mid-soles, it is too dark. The paint itself is awesome as it dries really fast, flexes and does not crack. Shame they can't custom mix that type of paint in a can.

Hmm, me too. Yeah want to and just keep finding excuses not to :unsure

Anyone interested in a pair of v2's size 12? Never been worn. The box they came in is a little beat up from the China to Florida trip but shoes are in mint condition. Lights all work. I just need the cash.

PM me if you are interested.

For the yellowing mid-soles, have any of you guys tried automotive vinyl dye? Like what is used for re-dying dashboards and interior trim. When dashes get old and turn yellow or brown from sun damage, this is often done to restore the color.

Hmm, what about the yellowing clear parts? What I find interesting is that those clear soles I made well over 18 months ago have not even hinted at a colour change yet. Shame the stuff was so expensive.

they probably have some form of UV protection in them.

Its pretty obvious the chinese factory didn't use a uv protected rubber casting material, as i've got several pairs and a couple have gone yellowish now.

Probably a cost factor! they do anything to save pennies down there in the factory!

Another 9v powered conversion I just completed. I ran out of batteries, so used a pair of old alkalines from one of my own conversions hence the dimness on the leds. I think they only have a little bit left in them. EL panels still going strong though!

Does anyone have any new sources for the EL sheets they wouldn't mind sharing with me. I would like to buy them from another source other than ebay. Also, JediFyfe I remember seeing your EL sheets don't have the wire prongs sticking out like the ebay ones, where can I get some of those?

I'm gearing back up for another full mod this month...

ebay is usually the main place.

also, here is a quick video of how a pair of V2 modified look like on feet. In slow motion!

Airair, did you just stretch the tongue or have you added some to it. It looks longer on your pair.

What I have noticed is that the tongue stretches pretty far. It's all how you pull the tongue and then strap the shoe.

Mine tend to slip back down. The tongues on the MP MAGs seemed to be a good length. Every time I as asked for a photo at SuperNova, I had to do a quick costume check and pull the tongue up as well as re-tuck the legs of my jeans in.

If you buy some special Velcro that is NOT the normal Velcro but rather a rubber version and glue it inside the strap that touches the tongue, it holds it in place.

Guys. I post up a bunch of pics of my custom MAG's and my real MAG's on Instagram. Follow me at JEDIFYFE.

hi. yeah, you can slightly stretch the tongue. My jeans are a bit baggy at the bottom, so when i tuck them in, it slightly stretches the tongue when i put the strap across.

Otherwise normally, you can just use a slimmer pair of jeans and have less of the stretched tongue. I wish it was leather tongue though!

a few tips if you are UK/European based and planning on modifying.

As i've done quite a number of modified pairs now, i've used a few different glues and adhesives so I have a few suggestions which I can verify work great.

To finish the front toe mod, I usually use a hyperdermic syringe with pink 18G needle end which you can get easily from ebay.

A good alternative to shoe goo and Loctite vinyl plastic adhesive is this glue here:

20_lge.jpg

Evostick serious glue. This one is a clear rubbery glue, very much like shoe goo, but seems to be slightly thinner, in that its easier to put into the syringe or bottle to squeeze out.
It dries perfectly clear and gives a superb finish.
Shoe goo seems to be slightly thicker in comparison to this, but overall this is practically the same thing and since it is slightly thinner, I prefer using this one at the moment.

I don't know what else everyone else is using for glueing down the white leather uppers back down, but having tried numerous so called "fabric glues" right at the start, I found all of them useless!
The best one that I eventually settled on and which is guaranteed to glue down and not cause any see through problems or runniness is this one here:

21_lge.jpg
Bostik Sew Simple.

Hand down the best glue for glueing down the white uppers after you've installed the switches and other wires.
This one is a creamish white colour which dries after 20 or so seconds. You can simply use a small piece of card or anything flat and just layer it around under the white leather fabric.

Then you just press down and it sticks down 100% perfectly to give a superb finish. The good thing about this is that if you want to, you can later on, reopen it carefully and then reglue it back down, and it will still look perfect.

You can do a small test, just take out a small blob of this glue and see how it dries. it dries to a soft stretchy rubbery finish so its flexible, perfect for the white leather area.
