Nike Mag V2 Mod Discussion (Page 58 Shopping List)

What would you guys do if you had 3 pairs of these that were modded and ready to wear. One pair you've been wearing that fit a little big but are ok, the other 2 pair fit better but are completely clean and unworn? I almost want to break in a new pair but I just don't know if I should until something happens to my worn pair. Hmmmm.

Hi guys,

I know this isn't exactly breaking *new* ground, but I've finally come to the other side of the odyssey that is modding these shoes and wanted to share some finished pics. I haven't posted any progress since my toe slim (first thing I did) so it's time I gave an update. I'm very happy with how they turned out, I really took my time and did things carefully. Not sure if I'm going to iron the laces or frost the ankle bubble, as those two things don't really bother me in real life. I'm just thrilled with the accurate lights and toe slim. Turning them on and looking at these shoes is just magic. I'm really convinced they give me 95% of the warm and fuzzy feelings that the RD mags would give me but for only 10% of the cost.

I'm calling this project an "odyssey" because it really is a CRAZY amount of work. At one point it occurred to me to possibly offer to do a few pairs for people if the going rate is $1,000, but honestly after finishing this first pair there's just no way. It's gonna take all I have left in me to do my second pair for display, and that's it. Besides, I'm under the impression that there are a lot of complainers of modding prices that have to be fended off, and agree they should try it themselves if they think it's so easy. The part that really got to me was getting all the wires and electronics in place in my "wearing pair" so that I wouldn't have to worry about any connections breaking. It's like working on a ship in a bottle because you can't get your hands down to the sole inside. Very frustrating! I have done some serious prop projects over the years (Han in Carbonite, fiberglass Proton Packs from scratch, Ark of the Covenant, hoverboards, flux capacitor, etc) and still these shoes took every bit of my skill and patience. It is not easy! Big thanks to Brad and many others in this thread for providing instructions and guidance so that us mere mortals can finally have some decent Mags!

Anyway, without further ado, here are some pics. Hope you enjoy the eye candy! :)

On feet pics! I wore them out one night to play mini-golf. As expected I got several comments and some very excited people. One guy ran down from the top of the mountain just to take a picture!

They look absolutely prefect! Great job. I am so glad more people can do these mods. It's great to see BTTF fans that didn't get the official MAG's being able to wear these out and enjoy them.

The most brilliant way of showing off the MAGs, mini golf.

Been waiting out for a lower price on the V2, but how to resist knowing of the potential?

Amazing conversions. I've been taking notes and hope to join the ranks in the future.

Here's a heads up for all of you either wearing your MAG's out and about in the sun or displaying them in a sunny room. My everyday MAG's are just starting to ever so slightly yellow on the rubber midsole/splatter area. It is VERY faint but I can tell, compared to my other pairs, that it is UV damage. I suggest that you guys buy some UV protectant from an auto store and apply it to the midsoles.

Yeah, i noticed it on 2 pairs ive been wearing out regularly!
Especially past 3 days when it has been scorching hot here in the UK, i'll get some UV protectant spray, but do you think it will be a permanent solution or just a temporary fix?

These rubbers they used for casting I think are bound to eventually go yellow, unless they are pigmented usually, but since these are supposed to be clear, I guess they didn't use any casting rubber with any sort of UV protection.

I'm guessing the RD mags must have proper UV protectant within the casting rubber, unless they would eventually turn yellow too over time?

Those pictures look great DL4567!

But, I have been working on modding my straps and I am to the point on one where I was trying to hook up the wire tape to the EL sheet. I don't know for the life of me why the my copper (doll house) wire tape will not seem to work. Whenever I run a simple mock up of my 9v battery, 9v EL inverter, and touch the leads on the EL sheet, the EL lights up fine, but the copper wire tape does not seem to work for me at all. Any idea what I could be doing wrong? I have even tried using the wire glue on the EL and wire tape connection to no avail...

It may be because the wire tape is touching the sides of the EL and shorting it out. Post pics of your set up for more help.

I don't have the Nike stickers yet (bought from someone from this forum) so I'm just trying to mock up the wire tape to EL and the wire tape just seems to not be carrying any current to the EL...do I connect the wire tape to the EL metal leads (prongs) or connect the wire tape the back of the EL sheets circuit itself?

Works here:

Doesn't work here:

Never mind, I figured it out...I was using the wrong side of the wire tape...durrrr...but thanks JediFyfe, you are awesome, thanks for being willing to help out a noob like me!

I was just going to post this. LOL

Thanks for the kind words everyone, I'm glad you enjoyed the pics! It's hard to get the exposure right on the EL, but like RobertTX my Canon camera treats me well. And yes, it is wonderful to actually be able to wear and enjoy these shoes as we've all dreamed of doing for so long.

RLMcFly, I had trouble as well getting the EL to light up using just the tabs/squares on the edge of the sheet, and ended up cutting all of my pieces so that each one used the metal leads that were already soldered on the sheet. The 5"x6" sheet with 4 pairs of leads was just enough to make the 4 pieces fit for one pair of shoes. EDIT: ahh there are new posts while I was typing - glad you got it working.

That's worrying to hear about some yellowing already, and surprising that it's showing up on a part other than the clear parts first. The clear worries me the most, but any yellowing is of course unwanted. The "clear" parts of my markpoons have yellowed significantly over the last 2 or 3 years, just sitting on a display shelf.

it has a great look! can't wait to see how u progress on them

Here's a picture of my V2 scratch uppers test. Still in rough phase, and needs some tweaks here and there but fits perfectly on my feet and almost dead on to the RD mags. With the white collars added, it will be roughly 2.5cm taller than the v2s, and virtually identical in height to the RD/movie ones. I measured them as accurately as possible and to scale.

You can see the difference between them and the standard V2 uppers. No comparison whatsoever. V2 leans too forward, especially from the back of the sole. I've made the correct uppers so they lean slightly back, and now depending on which fabric is used, the ankle buckle will now stay in line with the heel cup, rather than droop forward like they do on the v2s.

The V2s seem to have the exact same template used from the V1 knockoffs, hence the innacuracy at the back and top sections.
I've pretty much nailed the exact way to do it now like the RD/Movie versions.

Just need to get some decent fabric now and see which method to go with. Either foam type like the movie versions, or more rigid with EVA foam like the 2011 release.

The standard V2s are more close to the way the movie versions were done, I opened the V2 fabric up, and its 2 layers of grey fabric, inner and outer, some thin upholstery type foam inside and some sort of strong cross stitch type fabric to give it lots of strength.

Depending on which materials I can get, I'm going to decide then on which version to go for, more movie style or more RD style.

how much is anyone willing to charge to make a fixed pair? I'd really love a pair hehe. I would try to make my own but i have absolutely no experience with wiring and anything of that nature.

I was wondering if any of you guys know what type of paint can be used to spray over the v2rubbersoles. Something that won't crack when flexed. Not sure what type would be best.

I'm thinking of doing some experimenting.

I know you are not referring to the clear sole, but if the clear soles on your Mags starts to yellow you can use this product called SeaGlow. It is a powerful chemical used for restoring boats (I believe) that when coated on clear soles and placed in sunlight for a period of time, makes the soles icy again. Use it at your own risk and the soles have to be yellow before it will have the desired effects. Tons of videos about it on YouTube and I am pretty sure you can buy it on Amazon. But as for the midsole yellowing, there is most likely not much one can do after it has already started...
