Nike Mag (Markpoon version) All LED conversion (no EL sheet!)

Hi guys,

Thought you might like to see my all LED Nike Mags. Even the buckle strap lights are done with LEDs. The entire lighting setup for each shoe runs off two CR2032 button cells which last about 6-10 hours. I know they aren't screen accurate, but they're close enough for me.

Haha yes I never noticed that, they dont look like that in real life though, just a general glow.

Hi Dynofiend;,

Your MAGs looks great :thumbsup

Looks good. Just change over your straps so the velcro is on the inside.

Thanks mate, have just been back and swapped em over. Funny because I was so careful about making sure I made them 'sided' so I had two different ones, then put them on the wrong shoe haha.

Thanks buddy, couldn't have done it without your skills and general awesomeness!

Yeah LEDs can look OK if they are properly diffused.
As you can see here, the sole lights are not diffused properly and you get hot spots.

True! Also, those are blue, whereas I think the lights should be a more aqua blue which is something I managed to achieve by using blue and yellow cellophane filters . I used micro LEDs (9 per sole) rather than simply a few large LEDs which further help to diffuse the light. The camera picks up the hot spots far more easily than the human eye!

That said, it all depends how accurate you are trying to be Vs the overall effect you are trying to achieve. I could go ahead and spend however much it would cost to have six EL panels and the inverters (plus the LEDs in the bubble), for a pair of shoes I'll wear a handful of times (which arent screen accurate anyway), and no-one other than me would be able to tell the lights are 'correct'. In fact, the majority of people would probably prefer whatever version was more striking. For example, those shoes above have blue lights, hot spots, and a great deal of light leaking out the back of the straps, but it's actually quite a nice effect as it's all so bright.

Yep you're right most people who aren't BTTF junkies (haha) don't even know the V2's are a replica. The model itself is fairly striking because it's unusual. I had a guy who worked in a Foot Locker think my V2s were the real ones only yesterday, and the lights weren't even on! :D
(oh, on another note, in Target, there were puffer vests that looked a lot like Marty's. Pity they were only kiddie sizes, or I'd have picked one up)

There are two ways to achieve the 'aqua' look -
1. yellow filters which works on the MP and V2 MAG due to the yellowing soles.
2. add a green led to the blue to produce cyan which is muck closer to the colour of the EL sheet used in the RD shoes. Problem is, the yellowing of the soles further changes this.

The camera is more sensitive to hot-spotting, however the LEDs in the soles are not being diffused properly as the diffusors used in the V2 shoes are clear and they really need to be opaque. The LED strap is firing through the side of a sanded peice of Perspex and why it does not hot spot the same the side soles.

what website did you find these mark poons from?

Mark Poon is a member on these forums, so you should be able to PM him (once you reach 5 posts) with questions about the shoes. However I think this particular shoe is now discontinued.
