NIKE MAG Knockoffs

Makes me feel better about my multi-piece sole now.

Me too :) Notice that the base sole is actually different to the side sole where the sides have 'waffle' and the base has what looks like small pyramids. These are almost like a positive of the pyramid mat I have used to make my 'waffle'. I could do this too, but it means double casting. First cast makes the negative or 'waffle', then cast from that to duplicate the positive. Can be done just extra time and materials.

And the Vac Pump arrived today and I did my first vacuum test tonight. I need to replace the main hose as it crushed in on itself, but once that is sorted, it means there is an opportunity for bubble free clear elastomer soles for all :love

I demand pics this very minute:darnkids

And I can't believe I didn't realize that the Mags actually DO light up on the sides in the movie.

Yeah they used EL back then too. The issue they had was breakages between the two side pieces where one would go out from time to time and that massive battery pack.

But i've seen pics of the EL being lit in the scene where Marty is first at his future self's home and getting out of the Delorean. Where was the battery pack then?

This is a photo of a prototype

(they only made the one?) for this, but apparently MJF had to wear a unit like this up near his waist to power the shoes that had lights. The wires ran down the inside of the legs of his jeans. Or so I read.

"Power laces! Alright! Power PACKS! Al....riiiiight?"

Yeah HUGE and that was just for the lights.

The Power lacing was actually done by a stage hand with a special pair that had holes through the sole for the cords to be pulled. I've posted the image several times where you can see a slot through the floor (even though it is supposed to be a bitumen street) near MJF's foot.

If only those prototypes had been screen used. The ankle bubble area would be so much easier to pull off.

Speaking of which, going to try to pull ankle bubbles using the rubber sheet I have.

And a question. Should I go for the tinted blue soles or back the waffle with white to make it more SA?

Yeah but not as cool as the bubbles that made it onto the final shoe.

I've got clear PET here which heat forms really well. I was going to leave the bubbles until after I got the Heel Cup sorted.

I went with raw colour under mine. In my case the mid sole is about the same grey as NIKE's "cement gray" they used on the NIKE AIR PRESSURE which came out the same year as BTTF2 and the MAG.

Today I had these done.

They are laser cut from white (NIKE) and aqua (MAG) plastic. I've glued them to some clear to hopefully preserve their shape when I heat form them over the Heel Cup.

Here's a quick test for the final soles. The other side would need to be glued down. The final will only have a tint of blue and not those big splotches you see on the test piece.

Again, apologies for the temporary crappy camera.

The seam for the el side is glued using G14 an epoxy for rubber that bonds like nobody's business.

Cool. Shoe Goo seems to bond like nobody's business too. It just takes time to cure. I wonder if putting it in the Vacuum Chamber will speed up the reaction time.

yeah, if you could scan a pic of the plain sheet as it is, along with a pic of the brand of the rubber sheet, that would be super helpful.

what exact type of rubber sheeting is it? is it silicone rubber sheeting?

if we could find the exact type of sheeting it is, if you scan a pic of the brand name, we could find out from the manufacturer then what exactly it is.

If i know what type of rubber sheeting to search for, i could down to some shops and also search online giving them the exact type, because you can't find clear rubber sheeting anywhere in most shops.

It sounds like Japan is way more advanced than the pathetic european shops.

Also an idea, since we can't get this rubber matting sheet it in the UK, was wondering if you would be willing to post some over to the UK and anyone else who wants some? thats if we can't find similar rubber sheeting here first?

would be willing to pay for the sheet, some extra on top and the postage if possible? Let me know.

My 'Frosted' Soles

My soles are a negative of the pyramid mat. I still have the failed pour 3 mat of the CCCE and its negative casting is perfect, so I can use that as a mold to cast a positive pyramid sole like the real MAGs have.

Can you try to get the mid-sole a little more matte/less shiny. If you did that the contrast would be stellar between the out-sole and the mid-sole.

Btw, did you experiment with the splatter method I used. As you can see in my, admittedly, crappy pics of the midsole (gotta get off my ass and get a new cable for my camera) the splatter looks pretty close to the pics of the 2011's you posted.

The plastic you're going to need is the kind you get in plastic bottles. I just used a long strip from a coke bottle.

I'm sure after I wear these a few times, that gloss will be gone for good :)

I did but only had the Emerald Green and no India Blue to mix in with it. So I painted grey over top of the green splat.

Yes I think Coke bottles are made from PET. I could use a Coke bottle or I could go see my mate at the plastics shop and buy a small piece off him.

Y'know...I wonder if you could get the texture into the foam of the MP soles by using a heated metal tool to pick/indent the soles.

Did you just...update your avatar there?:)

Yeah. I might need to take one with the pretty glowing bits and the Tube Bag :)

A heated tool would work, but you would need to be careful. I think the urethane foam is the same on the K-MAGs as it is on the MP MAGs. So re-reading my build thread, I found an comment from TheNickFox that I can gladly post a positive response to. You CAN use an aerosol to paint the mid-sole. I've done mine and there is no issue what so ever.
