NIKE MAG Knockoffs

Thanks. It IS in fact two pieces. This way I have more room for the EL when it goes in and will give a veeery slight splay around that area.

I'm actually remaking the main outsole so I can post one tomorrow maybe.

OK Cool. Look forward that. Hopefully tonight I can work on smoothing out my edges and maybe add texture to the midsoles. I am wanting to use a syringe to squirt the Shoe Goo into the smaller spaces, but the stuff won't suck up. Maybe if I pour it into the tube and use the plunger to push it out the end. Will suck if that doesn't work either.

What will you use for texture? As I said before, I had to compensate for lack of texture with more splatter to achieve the effect of the shadows caused by that texture. I didn't add it as I was afraid it'd peel too easily.

I'll probably use Shoe Goo and an ice cube. Once I have a smooth coat, I'll most likely use an old tooth brush (keeping it wet) to push in the surface and create small dimples. This stuff takes about 72 hours to fully cure and it is hard once cured.

Well it worked :)

Tonight I loaded a plastic syringe with Shoe Goo and better manage the flow and squeeze the product into tight and small gaps.

I then used an ice cube to smooth out the goo and the results are looking very good.

A bit blue. I'll probably go a little clearer than this. I'm pretty happy with the waffle pattern. Should look great with some el or leds.

Come on AlexBC, cough it up :) I don't need them, but it might save others on this forum a heap of $$$ if you would volunteer the info about how you did yours.

My Vac Pump still has not arrived, so I can't do anything here until then.

Um....I just went to a store and bought a metre of rubber material off the roller. Only brand name attached is the name of the store and that's one here in Tokyo:confused

I guess any flat vinyl/rubber sheet will do. The thickness is the same as the soles that come standard on the MP.

Can't really offer up any more info than that, i'm afraid.

As for the pattern, I actually went and made a resin copy of the original sole and then used that to press into the heated rubber sheet. Cut out, glue on. Voila.

Interesting. We have a rubber specialist [chain] store here it does not offer any clear rubber, just clear PVC mats.

So your waffle is the negative of the K-MAG soles or MP soles? Both make an interesting effect when an impression is taken.

Would PVC work just as well?

It's a negative of the MP soles. The MP soles have the right number of squares so it works well. Using a resin copy of the MP soles works surprisingly well and gives a really nice, crisp waffle pattern.

thanks, you must be very lucky then, because nobody is able to go into a shop and just buy some transparent rubber sheeting so easily. If it was, then everyone would be buying some and there wouldn't be an issue with clear soles then.

if possible, could you post up a close up of the standard clear rubber sheet before you heat it with the rubber pattern? if possible from the top and side so we can get a good look at it?

and the exact size of its thickness in mm?

it will be really helpful in tracking something similar here in UK, europe, USA as i can take a HQ picture of it with me and show it to the store owners.

thanks

It could. The issue is how long would it last if you were actually wearing them.

If you ever get to see the K-MAGs, they have different sized square for each different size. So it is not a case of one size fits all.

I have found car mats in clear rubber and even bought a set. I could not use them in this project as the mats had a checker plate pattern and whilst they could be made to work for some form of futuristic boot, they are not suitable for these shoes.

I'll try taking a photo. Not sure if it'll help much. It's basically just a clear sheet a few milimetres thick.

I assumed buying sheets of rubber from craft stores/diy shops would be pretty easy in other countries also.

Not as easy as it seems. As I mentioned, there is a difference between rubber and PVC, though at first they might seem to be the same.

Hmm. Considering I don't plan on wearing these (couple of times maybe) I wonder if PVC is easier to work with than the rubber i've been using which is a bit of a ***** to get a decent pull out of.

I've been Vac Forming 3mm grey PVC (to make the Heel Cups) and it is easy to heat and form. If you don't plan on wearing them, then yes, clear PVC would work a treat and look great.

Oh and here is that shot you mentioned about the soles on the real MAGs being many pieces.

Havn't seen that shot before. Excellent. Makes me feel better about my multi-piece sole now.

And I can't believe I didn't realize that the Mags actually DO light up on the sides in the movie.
