NIKE MAG Knockoffs

Working on the clear soles this evening. Trying to get as close to the waffle pattern as possible. I actually had a bit of an accident last night while molding a test pair. The sole actually caught on fire!

Are you using Shoe Goo? If so, check out Punisher's tutorial on the clear soles he did and how he used the sole of the shoe to imprint the Shoe Goo. It looked very good and probably the closest to the actual shoe shown by any DIY'er so far.

What were you doing to make it catch fire?

I'm using a custom made metal negative that i'm using to imprint the waffle pattern into a large area of clear rubber material.

Some trial and error but it's working pretty well now. Should have a good example with icing by this evening to post here.

Havn't had time to do the soles yet. But I did manage to do the splatter on my heroes. Look a bit blue here but greener in real life.

Tried hard to get the minimal splatter of the real megs but it always comes out more speckled. How did thay do it?

Are you wanting 1989 or 2011 MAG accurate? I think they look good and need to be brave and pull my soles off my own MP MAGs.

I think i've settled on a mix of 89 and 11. I find the 11 a little too stiff but the clean detail of the 11 appeals to me.

Go for it. It's a shame to pull an MP apart but it's great fun.

They are great looking MP shoes. They would be awesome if they had clear soles and maybe a new ankle buckle :behave

Just tested the negative on a scrap piece of rubber matting. Not enough heat on this one but I should have it down after a few tests.

I completely forgot to mention (but as soon as I do my entire sole Ill be posting a tutorial how to accurately paint the mid-soles. Just use steel wool pulled very thinly and rolled into a ball. Dip it into the paint *in my case I'm using puffy paint. Then just stipple onto the shoe, it gives the look of the paint being shot onto the shoe at a high enough pressure to acquire the splatter look. :)

You should post a picture of your soled as they look great.

Well the lettered Heel Cup is full of clay and now covered in Plaster.

Lets hope this works. One reason this looks a bit ordinary in the photo is that there is a clear protective layer and I didn't peel that off before the heat forming and it melted a bit over the letters. I think I got it all off before casting this morning.

Might take the heat gun to my K-MAGs now.

For this test I made a mold from the MP soles in a resin then used that on plastic warmed in the oven. Not happy with it, though. It works for the oval sole piece but the main piece is another matter.

Do you guys think the waffle pattern is looking good there or is it worth researching another option?

Liking the new heel cup btw Cavx. What are you doing about the texture on the sole? I tried adding the texture to my soles but it didn't come out as well as I had hoped. The problem is, if you're going for more accurate splatters, the texture on the white of the shoe makes the splatter look denser from a distance but sparse when you go up close.

The lettering is miles ahead of the die-cut lettering that co
mes with the MPs as standard. How did you do them? By hand?

Some great stuff going on in this thread.

A good effort none the less. I think the only way to do this is to remove the soles from the shoes, and cast this part in rubber, creating a 2 part mold from silicone first.

I am in the process of building myself a Vacuum Chamber (am buying a pump and tank for my Vac Form anyway) so will be able to degas the CCCE I didn't have great luck with last time because I didn't have the tools. I also want to get a pressure pot so I have bubble free castings.

Thanks about the Heel Cup. Today's effort to make a negative plaster cast only sort or worked. The M and G of MAG worked well, but the A and most of the NIKE broke when I extracted the master.

I think the best way to do this is Vac Form over a buck (the way I made the Heel Cup in the first place), then glue the heat formed letters to it. For what the letters cost, I might as well just get the NIKE in white and the MAG is a teal or green or what ever colour they have that is close. The letters are laser cut from a PET plastic, but I also have acrylic ones and that stuff comes in many colours. The heat forming is easy (done with a hot glue gun over a plaster version of the buck. As for the gluing....I might use a different solvent next time that is less messy.

Even though this Heel Cup is slightly over sized, I was able to squeeze it down a bit and think that for a scratch build, this slight OS won't pose any problems. You have to pack the heel with EVA, so those with big feet will appreciate them anyway :)
