New Voyagers Omni

Oh wow thats sooo interesting!! Thanks for clearing that up Rob! I understand now . Will we have the plastic colored red and green too? That would be awesome! :)

Yes, I will be CNC maching the lenses from colored acrylic. Originally on my last omni I made one lens and mold and cast it from clear resin, but that ended up altering over time the lens as the mold got more use. CNC machining the lenses makes certain that the lenses are identical from the 1st omni to the last. Plus cementing the 2 colors together is allot easier than trying to glue clear resin. Acrylic cement is just as strong as the acrylic is it self and is very clean looking.

So here is what I am doing right now. I don't want people to think I am slowing down on progress of the omni because of lack of updates on the 3d model portion.

I am designing and prototyping the internals right now. The main thing I !@#$ed up on last time I made the omni was leaving the electronics and internal moving components till the end.
If the internals are not done now, they may not fit later, so I am picking out my electronic components, making circuit boards and developing the engineering for everything to work properly.
I am almost done with the design of the circuit board, but I am waiting on samples of switches, speakers and battery holders to arrive so I can make sure they all fit. Then I will do a simple CNC machined circuit board to assemble and test.

I will then order the 3d printed parts to see where I need to make adjustments. Brass shrinks by 7% when cast, so I need to take that into consideration when designing these parts.
I will post update photos of "working" parts and components, maybe even the failures just to keep people up to date.

I have found pretty much every electronic component needed, and they are all readily available off the shelf parts. I want to make sure I do not buy discontinued or short run electronics because that will cause problems years down the road when something needs to be reordered for either repair or extended production. The only thing I am not 100% sure on is the speaker I have selected. It is a .3 watt rating, but I have gotten away with that before. So time will tell as I test it.
Thats it for now, just wanted to keep everyone up to date.

Thanks Rob! You have defiantly have got everything covered!! Full speed ahead!! One quick question. Will the brass button be able to be pushed down or will it be a stationary button for show?? I do not care either way since I am not getting sound effects on mine. Just curious to know. Thanks!

It will be a real button. If you choose sound, it will activate a "swoosh" sound

I would like to get advice on the flash rate of the Red light. I have calculated it at 2hz. Can anyone confirm this?

Rob not sure about hz and all but the red light totally flashes pretty fast refer to the episode "Agents of Satan" or the Pilot. :)

Yeah Rob I just saw Agents of Satan when the puritan guy takes the off Boggs belt omni and opens it up in the court room. Its very fast like 3 flashes per second. I count 1 Mississippi and there were 3 flashes in that second. So 3 flashes per second.I also did it with a stopwatch.

I appreciate you keeping us all in the loop on this, Rob. I know you're working hard on it to make a really nice piece and I can't wait to get my hands on one when complete. I have complete faith in your ability to make a great Omni!

Hey Rob, any noteworthy news for the Omni crowd?

I have been working on getting the correct electronics to fit. In my last omni I had soooo much space inside. This one is much less. Standard off the shelf components are all built so large and bulky, and I am having to hunt down components. As soon as I have an electronics package that fits, I will be releasing the new Omni.

Hey, Rob,
I was wondering. I would love to get the Omni in brass, but the price will probably force me to buy it in sections. But the NOW NOW NOW part of me won't stand for that, so I was wondering.....will the parts also be able to print in plastic, so that I could have a less expensive version to play with right now as I order the parts little by little in brass?
