New Voyagers Omni

Hey, Rob,
I was wondering. I would love to get the Omni in brass, but the price will probably force me to buy it in sections. But the NOW NOW NOW part of me won't stand for that, so I was wondering.....will the parts also be able to print in plastic, so that I could have a less expensive version to play with right now as I order the parts little by little in brass?

I will have FUD, but the other plastics require thicker walls and that would not work with my design. FUD and lost wax cast metals have the same wall thickness requirements.
FUD is really fragile though. I suggest do it in parts. Even in FUD you will spend some money as it is the most expensive plastic.
Personally I think being able to buy it incrementally is what is going to allow everyone to get one. I had so many complaints on my last omni because the price was so steep, but there was nothing I could do about it due to the method of assembly.

I have been working on getting the correct electronics to fit. In my last omni I had soooo much space inside. This one is much less. Standard off the shelf components are all built so large and bulky, and I am having to hunt down components. As soon as I have an electronics package that fits, I will be releasing the new Omni.

So does this mean you've got brass prototype in hand or are you going off your schematics as far as fit? Thanks

No, Right now everything is in CAD. I am using the actual components to calculate the fit before I print.

Oh my gosh! Rob! I am an original omni owner (my certificate says that I am owner number 8) and I just bumped into this thread quite by accident. I was trying to show a work buddy what the heck an omni is (he's from Sweden) and my google result turned up this discussion page. I'm very excited to hear that you're now creating an updated omni! Wow! I may just have to sign up to be a buyer!

I believe that, way back in the day, I sent you some AIFF audio clips from the VHS recordings of the show for the SoundFX of the whoosh and the lights. Now that the show is out on DVD, I've updated my clips (accessing the VOB file directly) and have the same SoundFX in cleaner sound. If you have need of them, I'd be happy to send them your way.

And, using some audio editing software, I spliced together different clips of the time travel music to produce a clean version (no dialogue over the start or end); my version even includes the falling canon ball sound FX with one thud. (I never liked the idea of traveling with Jeffrey!) I did the same for the credits music (found two different versions where Jeffrey said "It's all in books" at two different spots, spliced 'em to produce a clean version). Anyway, if these audio items would be of service to you, I'd be happy to contribute.

Keep up the awesome work!

Hey Brian, ya it has been 11 years since my first run. I would love to see the updated sound files. My email is bob@replicaprops.com
Thanks buddy.

Wow, it is hard to believe it has been 11 years since then? I need an omni to go back in time and enjoy the halcyon days! I was a grad student back then (living the dream in Sunny California) and did not realize how much I was living the easy life until I became a professor. Now I am truly busy ALL THE TIME in New York City!

Before I forget, I looked over your beautiful renderings, and noticed one thing: the year dial needs a "00" or else we can't go back to, say, 1900. ;-)

And, there is one element missing from the updated Sound FX I sent you: in one episode, there is a quick time travel sequence with no music and only sound fx. I have it recorded from the VHS but not from the DVD (so I didn't send that one). For the life of me, I can't recall what episode this SoundFX only is from. Maybe it is the Cleopatra one? Anyway, if anyone can tell me which episode that is from, I'll dig out the DVD and get an updated recording of that FX and send it on to Rob.

All the best everybody!

From what I can tell, the "V" is zero

Thank you very much! I remember the first round about 10/11 years ago and missed out on it. Your really going all out on this and if you need any additional info on the show version (pics or views) I have the series on DVD which is much clearer than VHS. Just FYI!

I listened to them and they all seem workable. I am also working with a audio designer who can digitally duplicate the sounds, so either way we will get clear accurate audio.

Yeah Rob I just saw Agents of Satan when the puritan guy takes the off Boggs belt omni and opens it up in the court room. Its very fast like 3 flashes per second. I count 1 Mississippi and there were 3 flashes in that second. So 3 flashes per second.I also did it with a stopwatch.

Hey Rob nice to hear from you again. Did you ever get this reply? What is the status on the blinking? Thanks!

I have hit a snag on the electronics as a whole. Right now I am trying to get a plan together to make it all fit. I machined out a test of the electronics compartment and I am using that as a test bed for getting everything to fit. So as soon as that is done, Ill continue production.

sounds great!! wow its a wonder how they did all of the electronics on the actual prop back in 1982.

Awe man, I hope you can get it sorted out.
