New Trek Props On Display

Anabolic Protoplaser

You sure that's not the Protein Resequencer? I could have sworn it repeatedly leaves samples of resequenced proteins on the ground! :lol

Interestingly while the comm earpiece resembles the original, there are still differences. Shown here with the HMS replica for Rodd.com (which itself is not identical to the original show prop)

Note especially the silicon earplug part.

without even knowing what the lense does? For all you know it may just be a digital display that moves similar to the tos one. Man you guys are hard to please. :rolleyes

amen brother!

I am glad to see the update of the first of many new Star Trek movies. The whole inside of the ship was changed why not the gear.

So, I wonder, is that earpiece custom or are they just using someone else's version? And if so, can we track it down?

No it's more than that and with over 40 years of watching Trek, you're damn right I'm hard to please! :unsure

I respect your view on this, but I have to say something. People are saying that we should not care, about the look of the ship, props..sets...etc..But I am sorry, that is not the case. I fell that they are also Characters. I do not hear any complaints about the earpiece. Because it just looks like TOS version. I have seen very little effort with this movie, to try to tie in with TOS.

That is how I feel about this. :D

I have no problem with people not liking the look of the props. But I find it asinine to be prejudiced against the entire movie based on display images of the props. Like Phase said earlier, if he'd judged WoK on that one comm image, he'd have thought it to be a horrible movie as well. Props don't make a film, the film makes the props.

To add on to that. Most people don't even notice too much about the props. Before I joined the RPF many moons ago, I never even knew that there was a difference between the the comms in TOS, WOK, and III. Most people just see a hand held device with a flip up top.

If you where talking about a scifi movie, like "Mission to Mars", then I would say yes to the props not being very important. But we are not talking about that scifi movie. How many times did we see kirk talk into a communicator? What about in the episode "The City on the Edge of Forever" where the tricorder played a very big part of the episode. It help give information that the viewers needed. Moments like that make the prop stand out and it doesn't become an object someone is holding..it becomes more.

Getting the artist from Star Wars to design the ship is not the right way to do Star Trek. (I love Star Wars and this is not to start Trek vs Wars)

If people where not happy with trek over the years..I understand, but I felt that the look of Star Trek was always good. The writing for Star Trek, was not at it best from time to time..But Special effects..props..desing..I think most people could say that it was very good.

You have people who worked on Star Trek who could have done a better job to update the look of TOS. The time it took to remake TOS for "Enterprise" that is not just a job of them..they spent Hours and hours to make sure everything was right.. Why do a TOS Movie..If you want to make a whole new looking trek, then make a movie with a new crew on a new ship called enteprise. Do not tell people that you are making a TOS Movie and then not give that to them.

Not everything has to be remade..sometimes the original is good enough. :D

lol ok my rant is over....for now!! :D

I think new communicator looks promising.

As others have pointed out -- appears to keep same basic shape with what looks to be a flip-open grid. Glass hemisphere is a cool replacement for the moire -- I believe the Playmates toy description said this might be a lenticular lens -- so there would indeed be an IMAGE inside the glass hemisphere is this is true. In other words, the clear lens could be an image projector of some sort.

Can't wait to see inside once it is flipped open.

Earpiece -- never much cared about this prop one way or the other -- that's just me, but nice to see a nod to the original series.

Tricorder? Yeah, it looks like a scanner to me, too. And, if so, I think it looks cool.

Like everyone else, can't wait to see MORE, especially the phaser.

Very well put, Joe. Star Trek has a great design, and so does Star Wars, but they're both very different.

The communicator, the tricorder, the phaser, etc. are not just props. Most props, the average person wouldn't necessarily notice. But ask anyone and they could probably tell you what the communicator, tricorder, and phaser are. Even if they don't watch Star Trek. They might even attempt a flip-open motion and a "Beam me up, Scotty." :)

I've always loved the design aesthetics of Star Trek's, Federation: Functional, practical, clean, and without wires. I can't say the same for all the new stuff we've been seeing.

For those who have expressed their opinion that Trek isn't Trek unless ship/props/uniforms etc are similar in design to original series -- I think you should at least make an ATTEMPT to consider that there are likely many DIE-HARD FANS who will gladly accept the movie even if props/costumes/etc do not resemble the original series, provided the SPIRIT, TONE and perhaps overall LOOK/FEEL of the movie remains true to the original.

I am NOT saying those who feel props/design SHOULD remain the same don't have a valid position -- but simply that you are likely in the minority of the entire fan-base and certainly the general public.

Please know I am one of the fans who was hoping they WOULD make props/costumes/ships look as much like original series as possible, but that I have no intention of boycotting the film if they aren't.

Above all else, I feel characters and story are MOST important -- and being such a geek over the props/design, I would love to see MORE similarities to TOS, but I'll still be there on opening night with popcorn in hand to watch the new movie regardless.

AND, if the story is good and the characters true to the TV series, I'll likely pick up toys of the props, ships and insignia badges as well.

DrMocy, I have not been one to say ..NO to TOS Movie. I cool with the idea of a young tos crew, I love the updated uniforms.

I feel, that they did not do they best job is updating the look of TOS. Better yet, they did not find the right people to do it. Also I am not saying that you should boycott the movie, at the same time, I am sick of see remakes that suck. What happens is that they make a movie, they then trick you to see it and it ends up sucking..Then you know what..its too late..they have your money and do not care what you think.

I want to have Star Trek for another 40 years, But people have respect what came before and stop trying to use the current fad and apply it to everything. I am sure that the idea for a TOS Movie came from the popularity of "New Voyagers" but the studio didn't realize the reason for the buzz..it was because a group of geeks, (like me) got some of the real actors from TOS. At the same time, BSG (Good show) is doing a remake..So I am sure someone at paramount said, LET DO THAT WITH STAR TREK!

I hope I am wrong and the movie is super sweet. But again, I had my hopes killed with so many remake movies...Like I said before, lets hope for the best! :D

Well, Joe, one suggestion I could make is that you read some reviews here on the forum and perhaps Roger Ebert or some other movie reviewer or friend whose opinion you trust before you go to see the movie -- this would certainly avoid any "trickery" involved with having you see a movie that isn't what you thought it would be.

I imagine there will be PLENTY of people posting their views on the movie right here on the RPF seconds after they leave the theater, so it shouldn't be too hard to review a LOT of people's opinions before you decide...of course, this opens you up to possible spoilers, too.

Talk of boycotting the film is ridiculous. The only way to really know if you like the film or not... is to see it.

All we have now is a trailer and a handful of pics. This being the Replica Prop Forum, of course the conversation tends to focus on those particulars when it comes to design.

Unfortunately there's been a general negative shift towards the look of the new film here. Some would say that it's justified.

I don't think being critical of what we've seen so far indicates a lack of enthusiasm or consideration towards the spirit of the new film. We all want this film to rock. And regardless of how much the design might leave us wanting when we walk into the theater this May, when we walk out again is definitely where it matters. :)
