I saw the midnight showing of Trek on Friday morning. LOVED IT! Just saw it for the second time at a screening at Paramount. Even better the second time.

Anyway ArcLight is displaying props in both the old and new lobby. They had phasers, several types of communicators, tricorders, costumes, etc. At Paramount they had the Corvette, Kirk's motorcycle and the cop hover bike.

The pictures are all from my cell phone so they're not great but I wanted to share.

You're welcome.

I didn't see the second style of Starfleet phaser in the film. The second time I saw the film I did see that they used a communicator that looked more like TOS. You can barely see it pictured to the left of the phaser we all know as the new one.

I'm going to LA next week, will these still be there?

I'm not sure. I was told about a week ago that the Trek props were moved into the lobby. So they've already been there a little while. Not sure how long they will be around. You could call the ArcLight Hollwood. It is located on Sunset Blvd.

OK combining your pics with some that were posted the other day...

It really does look like the Kelvin props were designed by somebody whose only frame of reference, was about 15 minutes spent flipping through Franz Joseph's Star Fleet Technical Manual. :unsure

Thanks so much for the pics!!! After seeing the other shots of the kelvin phaser I'm liking it even more! If it just dident have that stupid port thing on the back. And great shots of the hover cycle, thats it bad ass!!!

Oh I almost forgot to mention the free stuff. The ArcLight gave away t-shirts, Enterprise iPhone 3G cases and laminated Star Trek cards. Paramount gave away gift bags with t shirts. I'll take pictures if anyone cares to see that stuff too.

Is that bad ?

I like those nods better than the sleek designs of the Enterprise. Chrome. I mean, chrome ? On a phaser ? Logos. Huge logos ?

I don't think it's bad at all. While I see how these Kelvin props fit even better into the look of that ship and era, I like these props SO much more than the Enterprise props.

I'd love to get a peek at the inside of the communicator.

I may have to reserve any more comments until after I see the damn movie :lol but to summarize I was referring to the Kelvin phaser in my comments with the photo montage I posted.

The Enterprise phaser is just Galaxy Questy. I don't understand it.

The Kelvin phaser looks like a half-steampunk interpretation of the TOS phaser, but again by somebody who wasn't terribly interested in reproducing the TOS phaser in any specific detail. It looks like a gardening tool or auto repair implement or something, with the textured grip and brass fittings.

The Kelvin phaser body has a wedgy shape to it, which recalls the Tech Manual drawing, which itself is based on a badly-outlined black and white photo in the book "The Making of Star Trek". So rather than be related to the TOS prop, the Kelvin phaser seems descended from the "mistaken ideas" about what the TOS phaser looked like.

And too the Kelvin phaser has to "anticipate" the Enterprise phaser, so it has the what-appears-to-be flipover double nozzle.

I'm saying nothing about how it plays on screen or fits into the plot of anything... I'm just saying I don't like the looks of the two phasers. But I dislike the Kelvin phaser slightly less. Probably. :lol

The real test will be to see if I am compelled to own replicas. :eek

I want these props! Any shots of the top of the phaser. Need to know to make one. I think that back port on the phaser looks like it will be removeable on mine though. wink. I love the retro look.

They usually linger around at least a week after the movie opens, so they will probably be through next weekend at least. The Arclight Sherman Oaks also has a cabinet full of weapons and communicators, and a couple of costumes (Uhura and one other I think).

Matt Jefferies designed the P2 to be converted into a P3 (rifle). Perhaps that socket if there for a shoulder stock?

David.
