New Trek Props On Display

I've figured it out.

Nero goes back in time and tells Tim Allen the secret of warp drive and that changes Starfleet history and turns it into Galaxy Quest. Leonard Nimoy actually plays himself.

Just in! higher res shots of the props...

So let's say that that thing is indeed the "tricorder".

Are the people that put these on display so ill informed that they don't know what to call it?

That seems unlikely.

I think we need to face it. That's the tricorder.

With every new picture, it moves closer to the "wait for Netflicks" bin.

I suppose that it's possible that's the real Tricorder, but there's a toy version coming from Playmates, and the description of that indicates (as reported on Trekmovie), ""lights up and makes authentic Star Trek movie sounds and spring-loaded top and front door covers.". That sounds like a traditional tricorder, at least conceptually.

McCoy did use larger scanners in the later movies...

the strange thing about the new Movie "scanner/tricorder/whatever" is that ring at the end...

The only thing that looks like it belongs in Star Trek is the ear piece. Everything else looks like garbage. They really blew it.

Uninspiring and forgettable.
At least they're being consistant with their designs.

Perhaps the glass hemisphere at the top of the comm is a viewer of some sort - a kind of Flash Gordon - oh what the hell, what do I care, the design of the Enterprise and the bridge had me turning away. What on earth are they going to make of the Phaser??? :thumbsdown

Kirk's communicator could be what Cadets are given. There may actually be another design that we have not yet seen.

The comm doesn't bother me beyond the fact it's not the TOS version, but with this "reboot" I guess it's expected. In fact the way I look at is like the fact the TOS comm was to the cell phone of the '90s to the new movie comm being to the iPhone.

As for the tricorder, have to see exactly if it's not the whole thing or part and how it's used. The mixed '60s retro and modern style though I do like so far.

Its either a TV Screen....for VIDEO CALLS.

Or just a Camera.

I don't think the comm is that bad out of whack. If you look at the cage communicator and the normal TOS one, it is a good mix with the exception of a brass type lid. I have to say I was shocked to read someone say the NX was a better design, because when Enterprise first came out, there was serious bashing of that show's prop designs. That show was before Enterprise and the communicators were much smaller and high tech in design compared to TOS.

I think they stayed pretty "believable" so far. I haven't seen the phaser yet, so who knows about that. I agree that the Tricorder prop isn't really the tricorder, but some piece that goes "with" it.

It is a hard line to walk, trying to make the original fans happy with continuity while trying to rebuild the franchise with new fans. I don't think kids today would like a movie that looked like a terrible 70's remake of a Sci-Fi with big boxy props and sets.

I can't wait to see what the inside of the comm looks like!!

Scanner looks alright, Uhura's ear piece is pretty satisfactory, but I have only one question regarding that communicator. How many mega-pixels does the fish-eye lens capture?
