Yeah, but look at the bright side.... I'm not sure if this was mentioned, but every panel line and bolt head visible in the model is part of the ACTUAL mesh, meaning the details will all be physically etched into the parts. So no crazy masking/etc should be needed, Rob's also got some good ideas I think for painting already. . I added texturing (the 'paint') to the renders just so I could see the colors to help with contrasting and the proper proportions. here's a quick render (with the large lens dome in place) so people can see what the physical model details look like:
