Re: ** New Members: Please Introduce Yourselves Here! **
Hey everyone, long time lurker, but finally registered because I actually have a project to talk about (I'll post about that in a few minutes).
I've always been a model builder, although few models from the early days still survive. I recently got a Moebius models Orion Space Clipper, which brings back fond memories of the original one I had many years ago. I still have my completed Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica models from back in the 70's, as well as a partially built Refit Enterprise and a partially built Millennium Falcon.
My replica prop-making goes back to high school in the 1970's, when I hand-made a crude replica of a Star Trek TOS hand phaser from wood and sheet aluminum, complete with an LED that lit up when you pressed the button. Having done that, I made the pistol part in shop class at school. It was all very makeshift looking, but I was proud of it. I still have the parts of it in a box somewhere.
As far as costume-making goes, I built a robot suit out of sheet aluminum when I was in high school, very old-school 1950's looking. I made a few upgrades over the next several years, wearing it for halloween and a Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy Party (in which I portrayed Marvin). Most of it still survives, but I can't get into it any more - I'm not the skinny stick figure I was back then. Also, in high school, I made a Wookiee mask from celluclay and fake fur, which I also still have, remarkably.
For quite a few years I never built anything especially elaborate, time and other interests always seemed to get in the way. But I'm back, baby. Building models and embarking on some fairly ambitious costume and prop replicas, which I'll keep you all up to date on.
Thanks, everyone, for posting your own projects, they're VERY inspiring, and the tips and tricks you've all posted will be invaluable in my own efforts. It's good to finally be a member here.
