New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

Yep. :thumbsup

By normal I of course meant gay people inhabit the same full gambit of crazy that the rest of us do. :)

Yes but many of them do it in a more fabulous way, darling!

(Sorry, had to channel a close friend of mine for a second there who is so far out of the closet he forgot how he decorated it before he left...as he puts it.)

Bonus round was pretty good. Never knew there she did anything with Matt Smith. Good to know she got him in. The only companion to have seen (technically) 6 doctors. 1's a technicality, but still :)

I met her twice in the same day...sorta. I was at Gally1 in LA. I walked in the bar and she was walking towards me. I saw her, gasped with delight and started walking towards her with my hand out. She took one look at me, squeaked like fightened mouse, and rabbited out the back door. I was shattered.

Next thing I know there's an arm around my shoulders and Nick Courtney explains to me in that warm gravel tone of his "don't take it personally, it isn't you. You remember all those genuine reactions she had to the stunt men in the shoddy rubber suits? She wasn't acting." Nick introduced me to her later in the day as a good friend and she warmed to me like it had never happened.

I miss them both even though I spent very little time with them. At least I got to work with Nick on a fan film and that was a total joy: http://www.eskimo.com/~rkj/death.html

As much as I loved Sarah she's my #2 companion to Jamie. Not only was he companion to my favourite Doctor but he also holds the record for most episodes (over 30 more than second place, Sarah).

Oh so not QFT :p

I had the BIGGEST crush on Sarah Jane Smith :p

When I met her I was so floored and still over the moon for her!

That's just so cool that Nick would take the time to explain to a fan that could otherwise have been crestfallen, and it shows that he and Liz Sladen obviously got on well.

Also extremely cool!

I think a part of why I'm not in the SJS #1 club is because all of the spin offs. Yes, the SJS Adventures was a kids show targeted at a younger audience but I saw a bit of one episode and it was BAD... Like REALLY bad. (IMHO, don't flame me)

It's the same reason I'm not too big on Rose. She was great but they weakened her story with the constant returns and then giving her her own Doctor.

Jamie didn't have that problem and I think more than any other classic companion had a rash "father/son" relationship with the Doctor that really sang to me. None of this "almost lovers" crap that the new series keeps throwing at us.

Nick and I knew each other before this happened. We spent a week on the same cruise ship the previous year and had become friends. When he saw me Friday night at the con he yelled my and my wife's names across the lobby and came right over to us. It was one of the best moments of my life when he did that.

Damn but I miss him.

If I weren't so busy saying brilliant I'd have more time to incorporate fabulous into my vocabulary. I have never however had the word darling come out of my mouth, I have enough trouble with people really close to me even telling me to have sweet dreams. Affection is not something I'm good at. Except hugs, I'll hug anyone willing to let me.

I've never seen any episodes with Jamie before, just reading your opinion has made it a top priority though. Never seen any of the classic Sarah Jane episodes before though either, so that's up there. Need to see the Brigadier.

Watching The Unearthly Child was painful for me though. It just kind of went against everything I felt like I knew about The Doctor. He didn't have any compassion and it felt like he was kind of useless. Don't shoot. I'm trying to continue watching but it's difficult, kind of confusing and very, very intimidating.

I have mixed feelings about the almost lovers thing they had/have going on. Part of me wants The Doctor to have a relationship with someone that doesn't annoy the F-ing hell out of me like Rose and River, but doesn't only last one episode like Madame De Pompodour and Astrid. Another part of me wants him to become abstinent for a mere hundred years. I definitely think that meeting, travelling and being saved by someone like The Doctor is bound to create very strong feelings, very fast. Strong feelings tend to be either familial or romantic, so familial it would have to be.

Holy smokes I just read Jamie is a McLaren. I'm a McLaren!

Classic Who is very rough for the uninitiated. You'll eventually warm up to the First Doctor though I think. There are a few great episodes like The Keys of Marinus that really show me why this became so popular.

Once you get into the Second Doctor it's much more what you're used to. Patrick Troughton created the character we know and love today. First to offer Jelly Babies, first to have a sonic screwdriver, first to be likable in a very smart kind of way. Sadly most of his (and Jamie's) episodes are lost... :cry

The biggest problem with Dr's 1 and 2 is that about 40% of 1 is missing and 60% of 2 is missing.

What I liked about 2, is that he came across as the professor, and Jamie and the girls were students.

What I liked about Sarah and I think what set her apart is that she didn't have a crush on him or look at him as her father or anything, but she was treated as about as equal as the doctor could treat a non-timelord. As was said she was a true 'assistant' helping all the way.

I kept waiting for the doctor to tell jamie to go put on a pair of pants. :) Whined too much for a tough scotsman as well :)

Not going to flame, but you really can't judge it on one part of one episode. There are plenty of great moments, and I often thought it echoed the feel of classic Who.

I'm sure it has it's moments but it was her with a few kids who looked like they were 8 years old in tow. Even my 6 year old thought it looked stupid. :lol

Never went back. But you're right, I should give it a few full episodes to be able to say that with conviction.

The pilot for K-9 was god awful as well. The kind of spin off that makes you wish her lousy send off had been it. ;)
