New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

Amazing end to a kinda "mehh" half season. Don't get me wrong the episodes were entertaining, I'm just glad they finally gave Clara some purpose.

I'm also wondering though when the Doctor's supposed to give River that darn future sonic. I mean, that's kind of a big detail Moffat's just leaving hanging.

Also hoping that next season doesn't have that "I'm Clara the impossible girl!" intro to every episode on BBCA like Pond had with season 6, that was beyond annoying.

This was by far and away the best episode of Matt Smiths run (for me) the whisper men were fantastic, and I hope we get to see more of them in future episodes, or is that past? :) I believe John Hurt will turn out to be the real 9th Doctor, as set photos have shown him wearing the 8th Doctors jacket with fob watch, underneath the 9th Doctors leather jacket, and I am remaining optimistic that we will see Paul McGann in some way, possibly in a regen sequence into John Hurt, has any mention been made of Clara witnessing any of the Time War? perhaps it is one part of the Doctors life she could not enter as it was time locked, which would explain why she didn't recognise Hurt, she also made a point of saying 'I've seen all you're faces, this is your eleventh face'

On one of the unseen dates, I assume. Same as when he actually told her his name. I don't need to see him hand it over, since we saw the payoff.

Nickfox, I really like those ideas. I just hope that Hurt's Doctor isn't the "real Ninth" and we get something more wibbly wobbly than just adding one to Eccleston, Tennant, and Smith's Doctors.

What if John Hurt is the much older, and war haggered 8th? Smith did say 'The Doctor' is a promise and Hurt was the one that broke the promise. So he could have been 'The Doctor' to begin with. I liked McGanns Doctor...but after so many years and battles in the War maybe he's aged into Hurt.

I loved the episode. I was very happy with the way they brought River back, it doesn't conflict with anything we already have learned and they didn't try to bring her back to life. I loved the ending and how they are leading it into the big 50th in November. This is going to be a very long summer and fall.

I'd rather see Hurt as an older Doc #8 than an new incarnation that's somehow never been noticed before. Nice to see Clara in the Doc's past, and I thought it was cool to see the pre-phonebox Tardis.
Anyone else kinda wanting to see early (1-7) Doc stories with Clara in the background?

I liked putting Clara with the other Doctors as a nostalgia nod, but no more. It wasn't done as well as it could have been with lots more money and time. Besides, it was obviously old clips and green screen and after the initial "cool" it gets tedious and distracting.

And I suspect McGann wasn't there and probably won't show up due to some rights squabbling with Fox. Or maybe there wasn't a clip of him from that one show suitable for use here.

But starting out on Gallifrey with the theft - freakin cool! John Hurt, what a great choice. And that graveyard tardis was just sad. The whole idea of The Doctor having a real ending was just beautifully and sadly done.

I'm eager like never before for November. Great job Moffat and crew.

He won't be an aged 8th Doctor. Matt Smith is the 12th Doctor. That was the whole point of Clara's "You're the 11th Doctor!" line.

What will be interesting to see is whether or not he gave up the name of The Doctor during the forgotten regeneration. If so, I wonder what name he'll be going by.

Actually we have no idea.

He could be the very first incarnation before the first Doctor, he could be something else entirely.

No one knows at all. All just rumour, conjecture and ideas.

If he's a missing regeneration then that sucks cos:
  • We're suddenly a lot closer to the "12 regenerations" problem
  • They've suddenly made every reference to Tennant as 10 and Smith as 11 wrong
  • Also every scene that's shown the past Doctors (The Impossible Things journal sketches, the Cybermen's data-things, et. al.) are now flawed.
  • Suddenly there's a whole life of stories we won't get. (Cost of Hurt for a season of flashback stories? Mega-salary time)
On the other hand, if they wanted an older Doc #8, then why not hire (the now older) McGann? The guy is still doing audios so he'd have been up for it. For that matter, why isn't he in the 50th? He should have been the go-to guy after Eccleston said no.

Conclusion: I'm confused and apprehensive, confuhensive, if you will.

Everything put forward at the moment is as likely and valid as the next theory. We don't know what'll be the case until 23rd Nov.
Whichever regeneration Hurt turns out to be, it's gonna have ramifications for the history in place for the last 50 years.

Man, I loved that episode. That's really how every episode should be. It was the first episode this season where I felt there was something at stake. They have to figure out how to keep that level of emotion. I thought it was great the way they put Clara in the old footage and I think the cheesy way they did it was purposeful. Looked just like the old days. The footage where it most counted (Hartnell taking the TARDIS) was very well done.

Many possibilities on who Hurt could be....most of them mentioned here. While the logical part of my brain thinks we'll only have Hurt for one episode in November the rest of my brain wants him to have a season!

They really need to bring McGann in for the 50th. Give the people what they want!

So, I wonder if Hurt was who the 'doc saw when he opened up his room in the God Complex.

I just caught bits and pieces of this as i was walking past my folks watching it. They did really well blending the old footage together and some of the older stuff got remastered into HD really well for old episode clips.

What a terrific episode. Very emotional at times and a most intriguing setup for the 50th anniversary special. It sucks we have to wait so long. This season has been so uneven but they really came through on this one.
