Hey JPC,

I won't be much help I'm afraid, I'm currently studying resin casting/products before purchasing or attempting technique.

On the plus side, that's why I find this site to be a blessing. I've learned much about modeling/painting just by "lurking" on the threads here and reading posts.

A good example of the pace I move at is that I'm just now beginning to cut my Falcon. Slow going, I know, but by being patient I've found the tools and technique that I'm comfortable with and this will probably save me from doing irreperable damage had I rushed in.

Also, I try to avoid constantly bugging the guys here, but I do ask for help occasionally and the community here is very helpful.

My very novice advice would be read some threads here, and hit youtube for tutorials and product reviews.

Good luck!

Also, to the true modelers here, I hope novice lurkers like myself aren't frowned upon. If so, or if anything I've stated here is "overstepping", please let me know.
Thanks

Well, having very, very limited access to supplies, I picked up an Amazing Mold kit from Michaels for the silicon mold. Works fine for pulling the mold I made off the Legacy Falcon, though it would have been nice to have more stuff for the price (was about $30 Canadian before a 40% coupon). The resin I'm using is the only kit I could find in my area - Alumilite Super Plastic in a 32oz kit. Cost locally was sixty bucks, but it looks like if you're in the States you should be able to get it more for like $30. So far it seems great - doesn't seem to have shrunk at all, captures detail nicely, and is pretty strong while still being easy to shape. The only complaint I have is that, without any mold release, the Koolshade-like texture on the vents seems to have been an ideal environment for some pin-hole sized air bubbles. Not many, and I think the texture is too fine to fill them without making a mess. Under paint, I think they'll be fine though.

Oh, and incidentally I think I see my confusion over that circular cutter - Amazon.ca does not carry the compass version, but does carry the Olfa CMP-1, which is a compass cutter, but looks like it doesn't have the ratcheting handle. Think I'll try it - while the ratchet would be nice if I were going to use it a lot going forward, I'm hoping it won't be too bad without it for the 14 cuts left to make for this project.

Hi guys, while at the hardware store I saw these 10A wire Connectors, I think I will try to use them as engine details...

They will be set much more inner than what is shown in the picture. Then I will cover it with Randy's PE grilles or just make the rectangular grilles by styrene....
Also since these are opaque I want to see the effect it has when my blue LEDS are mounted at the back. Just waiting for my strips to arrive....

i was thinking of these as well, maybe casting in clear resin as details , brilliant....

Hi Timmy & Jimmer, Thanks for the casting tips..I will need to learn more from youtube before trying casting myself.

Vacformedhero, yeah casting it in clear would be awesome! Just imagine add some small styrene bits to it and it will look great even when the LED lights are off.

Do you think painting some areas in chrome silver would be good? Chrome may increase its refelctivity...I saw the Rustoleum chrome paint can and was thinking of trying it?

ignore this post, just realized something I missed out

Didn't get to this as much as I was hoping to..anyhow...got him roughed up, he has just solid colors -so this is un-textured. Now the real question is..how detailed to make him..since he will be tiny tiny :) Any input welcomed..I know he's a little wonky in bits right now.

For a 1:48 figure that's only going to be seen either in the cockpit (and therefore from the chest up) or in the turret? I'm thinknig you're just about done, dude! That already looks more detailed than the micro-machines figures, and you've really managed to capture Ford surprisingly well in that scale. One suggestion....since the Falcon leans more towards the 32", what about a version in his ESB jacket?

Since you just need the part that's translucent anyways, can you just chop off the opaque part and then set them slightly less far back?

Does anyone have a direct link to Randys kit on Shapeways? He says it available to order but Shapeways website is very hard to navigate.

Really nice TronGod!

You don't need textures for 3D printing. Check the fingers: not too thin or it will be unprintable. Just keep all the fingers of each hand in one object..

Looking good!

There is no such frowning allowed here, especially on your own thread.
This crazy toy is bringing out so many lurkers and no matter how basic the question, just ask, I do, I'm a newbie to this level of modeling even though I've been making stuff for ever.

This is the place :)

Wow he looks great, like timmy said for that scale he looks finished to me :)

Yeah just pointing out the untextured thing so people know they are looking at the shape of things and not a texture..plus I slapped different colors on him that are not meant to be a final color, other than help keep the different sections marked off.... Yeah the hands pretty much need some work..was going to make the hand more solid and was going to either lower his collar or make it thicker. Wanted to post something so people knew I was doing it...just going slower :) I still need to make him water tight.... also...still going to send this to you when done so you can inspect and help me get it the right scale :)

Thanks.. Yeah I suppose if hes this small I shouldn't worry about putting wrinkles in the clothes too much...but I do need to technically fix some things so it will print ok.

Sure..when I get this done and Tony approved...I will make any variation anyone wants :) So basically you want the jacket with sleeves ? ..and I guess his shirt is a tad different too :)
