New BMF coming

Hi Guys.

My 12volts Mini Fans arrived today so just want to share an idea I got, not sure if this was done already before, but anyway here it is...

The mini fans will be place just below the top rear engine grilles, it would not be attached to the grilles top itself but instead be fixed within the ship (i.e. because the engine grilles top is detachable if someone want to see the inside). The mini fans will be part of the scratchbuild engine mechanics.

Anyway the idea is to redirect the AIRFLOW to the Engine Exhaust Thrusters to simulate functioning sublight/hyperdrive function. The Fans will be on when the LED lights on.

I was thinking of using RGB LEDs change the color from RED-BLUE-Bright WHITE --the change in color also increase the Fan speed (i.e. using PWM signal)... Meaning I might use Arduino...tsk,tsk ,tsk...still a newbie there.

Sorry if this has been discussed, is anyone using additional glue/adhesive when applying the decals? I plan on using some decals that came from Hasbro, painting then sealing with clear coat. Will the glue that's already on the decals combined with clear coat be sufficient?

Sounds reasonable, since the stickers were made to work on the 'toy' (though that is no guarantee.) Recommend using some of the scrap sticker sheet to experiment with your planned technique (say, on the interior where not visible?) and let everyone know how it goes.

Good idea. Most certainly gonna research since Falcon is made of such odd (cruddy) plastic. What got me worried is that I saw a Hero X Wing on store shelf last night and the cockpit decals were already peeling off.

Hi Kokkari, hahaha I wish! LOL!

Do you know what is the general understanding on how the Gun turret rotate and swivel? Does the whole top circle rotate? I can't seem to find a solution on the Gun turret boxes and the access tube with ladder.

I know the access tube is directly opposite the cockpit corridor, the blueprint I got from Hayes is wrong.

Any idea?

My understanding is that the original yoke was pinned horizontally (unlike the Hasbro MF mouting), which could then rotate about that axis. Combined with the guns pivoting in the yoke, it could point anywhere in its 'field of fire'. Cool! Works basically the same as a Sea-Whiz (USN close-in weapons system [CWS])

OK, so I popped for the long cockpit on Shapeways, side walls and back. Really, really nice work, sir! Now the ten million dollar question.....how do I prep these for primer and paint. I have never dealt with printed material before, so be gentle!

I've the instructions written on a file for this reason...

Howto clean the FUD parts?

In order to paint correctly the Frost Detail and Frost Ultra Detail parts, you need to clean them. The SLS printer uses wax as a support material, so you must eliminate all the wax.

You can use several solutions, or all together:
Use an ultrasonic bath, like the ones used by the jewellers.
Use a degreaser, like Simple Green or dish washing liquid; soak the part thoroughly and rinse. You can repeat the process several times (make a test with an expendable part). I've tested this and no problems.
You can use also warm water, max. 70º/158 Fahrenheit.
You can use a hair dryer to melt down the wax, but be careful to avoid melting the plastic too!!! Be careful. After that you can soak the part on a degreaser again.
I’ve tested also using a contact cleaner spray, and it works, but I recommend doing a test with an expendable part.

Some people use 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean FUD or FD parts.They soak them for about a minute, gently go over them with a soft toothbrush, rinse them in the alcohol bath, and set them aside to dry.

You can use also acetone.

Other solution that you can read on the Shapeways forum:

“To clean the parts I use a product called Bestine (chemical name heptane) to clean any wax off the surface of the material.The process turns the surface of FUD an opaque white. What is interesting is that it seems that in this condition, acrylic paint will adhere much better to FUD (as though it had been given a coat of primer paint). At the same time, it doesn't suffer from loss of detail created by a thick coat of paint.
Bestine is an oxious chemical and should be used only in a well ventilated environment. I have heard of other people who swear by Acetone,Furniture Polish, ultrasonic cleaners, dish washing soap, and several other choices”.

The big thing is to get it really clean..there is a lot of goo caked into these parts...If you put paint on a part with the wax still on it..there will be trouble - "ROBOCOP" :)

Correct me if I'm wrong..but the purpose of the fans was to keep the models from melting from the super hot lights inside.. :) Funny how the fans are now a detail of the model :)
 
Hi TronGod, hahaha yeah the fans are now part of the detail.
The good side is if you want to cool yourself in a hot day just take the Falcon face the rear exhaust towards you and switch it on, you and will have a cooling fan ready... Also functions as a reading light....LOL!
 
I use acetone. But just for a minute or so. Bits of wax and crud will fall off just sloshing the pieces around. And they will sorta turn an opaque white. Also, if there are any flaws in the print you will probably find them. I washed some delicate parts that seemed a bit not right and as soon as they touched the acetone they started falling apart. So the wax was holding them together.
 
Question for Spacebob or anyone who is using his awesome internal support template - are any of you planning on doing engine lighting, and if so, was there a space problem back there? I'm getting ready to cut the plywood, but stopped when it occurred to me that the supports run right up against the back of the ship, and don't really leave any room for the led strip (going with 5050s, as it looks to me like the 5630s all need to run off 12v, and I really want my Falcon self-contained), the diffuser, and the engine strip. I'm chopping away the central support under the engine vent, so don't want to loose any more structure back there than absolutelty neccessary. Any thoughts?
 
Question for Tony @ Shapeways, I noticed in Jaitea's Hasbro mods that he added some additional parts and I borrowed his images for reference, and I wondered, if you could reproduce these in studio style for replacements ? The highlighted part pic #4 looks very toy like and I am not sure what part replaces it

Hi People, latest set of Shapeways parts have arrived and there was a error because I got ( and paid for!!) two sets of parts, therefore I have the following for sale at a reduced rate:

1 x set of the Hasbro engine louvre arms for the 32 inch ESB Falcon ( 26 parts in all for top and botto of engine flaps )
