New 52 Mr Freeze (New Photos pgs 1 & 6)

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Light gels are the colored sheets that theatres use for stage accents, meaning they turn the lights different colors. I accidentally grabbed the higher-end gels, which are too thick, thus inhibiting my ability to see anything but shapes.

For the silicon, i just want to add like a line or two to make definition. If you look on the pic of Freeze in page one, he has, what looks like 3 seam lines. I want to put lines of black silicon down it to have the same look so that I don't have to sew seams (That would be too much work).

I could try puffy paint, but I heard that silicon stretches better. The problem is that I can't remember, or find, the person that said it. I also don't want to ruin the shirt, due to me already gluing pieces onto it.

Thanks for the help guys!

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

I've been working with a lot of tinted silicone lately in weird ways, namely with fiberglass twill weave to make a super flexible carbon-look piece for my costume (I'll be looking for you at DCC!), and here's my .02:
If you thin it with a bit of xylene, you can make it flow like honey and still have it stick to whatever. Problem being that after the silicone dries, nothing else sticks to it (I know, duh moment; it's silicone!) so if you're planning to paint it, I'd add a few drops of acrylic paint when you thin it. Just for reference, I'm referring to el-cheapo silicone caulk, not the good stuff like Smooth-on or whatnot. I usually get 100% silicone clear so I can color it. You can then squirt your mixture out of any empty containers with tiny holes, like an old glue bottle or whatnot.

Anyway, for your raised seam, I suspect you have or are looking at pre-colored stuff? If you happen to use it, make sure you've got your shirt stretched over your form (duh moment #2). The silicone does stretch well, even better thinned, but it tends to embed/bond itself in the fabric so it's pretty permanent if you make a goof.

I'd be tempted to experiment with the puffy paint, since silicone stinks for quite awhile, too. Not sure how the caulk handles against skin either (if it seeps through the fabric's weave).
I'll look around my work room for other stuff I have laying about. As someone else said, latex is doable too, which I happen to have a bucket of at my feet. :D

Add: Just remembered, for your goggles predicament, that film they use for cheap 3D glasses (the name escapes me at the moment) could be a last resort fix if you've got clear lenses handy.

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

As a science major, I feel I should clarify on the point of carbon dioxide. It is not actually toxic. It is deadly though, but it kills not by poisoning (as the word toxic implies) it kills by asphyxiation because it simply displaces the oxygen in enclosed spaces due to its higher density.
Not to be confused with carbon monoxide, which IS toxic.

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Still thinking on your raised seam issue, but while looking around, I did stumble on something else that might aid your fog machine.
Awhile back I was working on a cooling vest for work to wear under a uniform, then discovered that the military made a better version. Anyway, to power the thing without a car, I picked up a duracell power pack thing that has a plug-in outlet as well as USB ports and other such goodies. It wasn't terribly expensive, ($30 I think?) and powers my laptop for around 90 minutes when camping or whatnot. Not sure what a mobile fog machine draws, energy wise, but it might be worth a look if you don't feel like ripping into the wiring.

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Wow I really appreciate the thought and help on this!

Updates: I fully sanded the tank and painted the under layer of metallic. Also I found a thin, non-textured gel for the goggles (which is pretty much the same thing as the 3-D goggle material-thanks for the suggestion superboom). So now I can see perfectly. I also glued more pieces to the shirt.

I'm working on foamy sheets for some of the belts also. I will post pics of progress as soon as I resolve an issue with the Internet (I'm on my phone at the moment).

Sorry if I'm really scattered, but, as of late I've been really busy helping a friend build a house as well as the Phantasm build.

Anyway, thank you for all the help (again). Sq10e- for the input on dry ice and etc. Superboom- idk where to start. You've pretty much answered most of my questions! I will be experimenting later in the week.

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Be looking forward to your next progress pics, and glad to help! I was a bit concerned my randomness may have gone awry ;)

Just out of my own curiosity, how are you planning to get air into your helmet dome? It's glass, right?

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Actually the way the dome is propped up against my shoulders, there is room for air at the bottom, so the dome really doesn't fog up at all. The real problem is the goggles fogging.

Okay, time for picture updates.

Here is the tank painted. It looks a little bare on the front, but I'll look around and see if I can find any aesthetic knobs, belts and whatnot.

Here is the suit with the chest piece and one gauge glued on. I have recently glued the other gauge on but I don't have a picture yet.

And finally I test painted half of the freeze gun just to see what it would look like, and it looks decent so I'm not too worried.

Okay well that's it for now! More to come! Thanks for the feedback guys!

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Thanks man,

I'm really glad my progress is starting to come along.

Also to SuperBoom, Who will you be as at DCC?

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

It's exciting to see projects like these come together!

At the moment, I'm imagining your goggles fogging up inside a fogged up dome. Doh! I've hit a bit of that myself with my project while making something real that was never designed to be real. Comes with some quirks, doesn't it! It's in a bit of a redesign after some weekend pieces didn't quite live up to expectations. Suffice it to say, the carpet in the project room is in a bad way.

On that note, Rain X has a liquid film that I used religiously several years ago in my old car as the defroster never worked. Little squirt bottle of anti-fog (or occasionally an aerosol) you can find at any auto parts place or occasionally wal-mart, a place I love to hate. Photographers have something for this, too, but heck if I can remember the product. I always wiped the lens with my shirt like a cave man after a few minutes of temp adjustment (like going from A/C to heat in a Texas summer)

Anyway, I'm going as a custom character this year; Sandman He's going to be my whipping boy to help sell books. :devil

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Update: I put in the EL wire yesterday and did some test shots. Of course it is brighter in person than in the picture, but it gives a good perspective on what it looks like. I think it's pretty cool!

And one in the light...

Also, I have kinda started to rig in the fog machine to the tank. It fits like a glove! (Ace Ventura voice)

and I puff painted the suit's lines!

Alright, leave any thoughts or suggestions if you want!

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

That EL wire looks fantastic! Good choice on the puff paint, too.
By the by, did you ever get your hex shapes figured out for your dome? I had a couple of ideas. One, you can print out a bunch of hex grids on decal paper, of if you want to go the 'glutton for punishment' route, you can use those glass frosting kits and make a template. It'd require cutting out all the hex shapes unless you can find something that already has them cut out.
I've got some hex photoshop brushes if you haven't found a solution yet :D

Add: Now lets see that fog machine demo!

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Mr. Knight; I've run into a foam on stretchy fabric issue as part of my redesign. What did you use to glue your foam onto your shirt?

I've got just about every kind except the 3M series of spray adhesives. At present I'm debating between sandwiching another layer or five of latex rubber and reinforcing them together with rubber cement (this might sound weird til you see what the latex is embedded in), or using straight fabri-tac.

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Have you tried good old fashioned cellophane for the goggles... the stuff used in many old style anaglyph (red/blue) 3D glasses? The theatre gels you tried are designed to withstand high temperature (hence thicker/sturdier) but you shouldn't have any issue like that for your goggles... if you need a deeper red you could try multiple layers?

I used a Elmer's Fabric glue (who knew?) but It works great! It does, though, take forever to dry and I had to leave a weight on it to keep it pressed down.

Thanks for all the compliments! I'll post a pic of the glue when I can.

Also to Blennus, I have not, but I found a gel for lower temps that works like a dime. One problem is that light does not show to well when I have the goggles on, meaning that the red looks black for people looking at me sometimes. I may fix that by adding small lights in the goggles.

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

for your googles can you not just remoive the lenses and use red acrylic perspex? I have used it for my Cyclops visor and it is great... see through it no problem and is a lovely red! and you can see it is red....

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Sduk, where do you get it and how expensive is it? The main reason I've used the gels is that I get them for free haha.

Andrewshaddox- we need to get everyone from the rpf in a big group photo!

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

Love those googles, very retro looking! and the EL wire really gives it a nice touch.

Re: New 52 Mr Freeze

you can get it off ebay mate... I only paid about £4 I think...
