Necronomicon (Evil Dead II) What's out there?

Ok. I don't have anything to compare it to. I've always been happy with the book though and it's held up well.

Having seen the artwork for the various grail diaries, the Nine Gates books, countless maps, etc. I don't think creating accurate artwork is the issue. There's too much talent here to make this all that difficult to pull off.

From my understanding the real problem is the Necronomicon's creator - I've heard he'll go after anyone that tries to replicate his books - cover or artwork. I do believe some members on this forum have experience dealing with Mr. Sullivan in that very arena.

Not saying it's good or bad on Sullivan's part. As the artist, he has every right to protect his creation. I'm just saying that from my understanding, if you try to replicate his work - for whatever reason or purpose - he will come after you.

No need to replicate "his" book, Ramiel could draw new pages with the suggestions from us. Throw in some edited Da Vinci dissectomi drawings, some odd and strange symbols and text...:thumbsup

yeah Da Vinci,,now he was an artist....no drawings I see from anyone hold a candle to his.

Artists have always been touchy with their creations. I have never seen any of the pages from this book , but from what everyone has been posting if it's original artwork it is his property . BUT if you create anything similar and change it with additional drawings, style or even different materials it's YOURS. Even if it is close to the original.

Several years ago I was bidding on a necronomicon on Ebay. This was back when you could email bidders directly from the auction links. I received a long and detailed letter from Tom Sullivan going into how bidding on this I was trying to steal from him and that he was getting the auction pulled but if I wanted to buy one he offered better versions himself. He even started this email with something along the lines of "In case you don't know who I am..."

I'm all for protecting your material if you so choose, but if you go into how I'm a bad person trying to steal from you in the first email you send me and then turn around and tack on "Unless you want to send scads of cash my way then we're fine" I'm not buying anything from you ever.

This was also around the time that one of our users here was having legal issues with Mr. Sullivan where he was not just trying to get him to stop making these books but was trying to totally destroy him in the process. This didn't throw me off of props but it did take me out of being a fan of Sullivan and his work thats for sure.

At one point I made a halfassed cover that I threw over a notebook as a gift for my sister. The photo makes it look wet but in person it was very dry looking. My photography skills leave something to be desired.

I'm with you Flagg. It's fine to protect your interests, but he went way over the wall on this, and stil does.

Years ago, I was part of an Evil Dead forum. We started a section on the Necronomicon and talked about all aspects of it, from the art work, to how to make your own.
Needless to say, Mr. Sullivan showed up and was all over it, he came across as being a little nutty.
He also had issues with just about everyone that worked on any of the ED movies, even Sam Raimi himself. His work was stolen, wasn't paid for, was duplicated without his consent by everyone in the production and their great grandmother.:rolleyes

I think a run would be possible, it would have to be kept really really quiet, on the down-low, QT.

I've always enjoy the Evil Dead movies and the props that went with them. I'm a simple guy and never got into the who did what stuff. This guy Sullivan sounds like he is over the top. But as we all know, he isn't the only one who acts this way.

A full necronimicon would be a great prop replica - Magnoli would be a great guy to tackle this too.

I started this project MANY years ago, but ran into some copyright issues before completing it. I think I've still got my illustrations tucked away in a filing cabinet...

Kind regards,
Indy

Antrock, I don't suppose you'd share what all TS put you through? I was around when it happened, but I don't remember what, if anything, was posted.

WOW. I'm really glad I came across this. I'm about 90% finished making my replica and was going to make a run (silicone cover)... Guess not! :confused

Would still like to see what you've done...

I'll see if I can dig up some pics this week. I made the cover to be representative of the Necronomicon without being exact. I particularly didn't like the cover with the teeth & eyes as I thought it looked too goofy (fit the movie well but I like to think of the book as pure evil and sculpted it as such).

The pages are mostly copied from screen caps and there's a few that I invented to flesh things out. In all there's about 25 double sided pages for a total of 50. They were all hand drawn and then I scanned them in to make any adjustments. Also, I went for the "written in blood" look from the third film so all the images, even the ones from the first movie are all red.
