Narcissus Builders Club N Stuff.

Oh - those engines look great (if you are going for a faux timber look!!).
Definitely rough. These are photos of the lower engines and nozzles Martyn had done earlier:

Bigturc, yes. These are way the worst results I've had in a ton of Shapeways orders this year. See also http://www.therpf.com/f10/narcissus-builders-club-n-stuff-151894/index30.html#post2558853

It's the orientation in the build tray that is the problem. When you make a flattened domed dish-shaped part then it has to be grown in a flat orientation and you're going to get that topographical map effect, it's a limitation of the process.

But with these engines they can be grown from the nozzle base up in a vertical orientation, giving much much better control over the surface - as with the lower engines Paul posted. It's disappointing they grew these horizontally....especially on their sides! - since it guaranteed "wood grain" on both sides.

If they won't fix those then that's okay, I can clean them up as they're big enough to work with. The one good/one bad nozzles are kinda irksome though; they're for moulding and part of the POINT of all this is that stuff should be identical! :lol

Anyone know these? the one in the center console rear is used 3 times on the narc. once here and twice on the underside.

Bumpin this coz I still need a few of these... Especially the cylinder part , top pic bottom console.

I think someone already said this, but the half cylinder part looks like the same pieces used on the BSG Colonial Movers, and noone has figured the origin that I know of.

Thanks Lee, would you know where on the movers the part is? I can't see it in the little refs I have seen. It looks to be sitting on "feet".

Got a refund from Shapeways for the nozzles and missing clamp. Nothing on the wooden engines but oh well, I didn't insist on that. A lot of models get built at once; their orientation can't be chosen by the buyer.

The factory picks whatever will be cheapest, so if you don't get a bunch of other people buying 'tall' models at the same time, your model will be built 'flat', and you're out of luck. Better stock up on sandable primer.

Thanks mate, but have you seen all those rusty cars in my shed? I don't so much need to stock up as stock down, really. :)

Wait till after Christmas and I'll make the acrylic/ styrene etc available with the engines. Everything but the kitparts. For those wanting to go this route and I know there's a few I'll include a PDF with partmaps and full kitlist. You may want a resin cockpit to save time otherwise I can give you the dims/template to cut the styrene "walls" yourself. Were pretty flexible. You will need an armature though as this whole model is built around it.

Have a welder... :cool I'm just ecstatic that this is being done correctly. The job done here and attention to detail is just amazing. Thanks to everyone involved. It's a favorite model of mine!!!!

Thanks Jamie. Ditto, as you know! :)

Just got the last big pack from Shapeways - new lower engines. Printed vertically and a thousand percent better than the uppers. Also about a hundred percent better than my first try, I'm glad I persisted. They look way better with the corrected taper and the chamfer around the front. Pics later...time to get on with moulds, methinks.

Ok.. So I just got the first one in from my plastics co. I'm gonna pop out the pieces tonight and box it up. Should have shipping quotes tomorrow and final prices. The panels are on a sheet of .75 clear PVC. It's the same stuff Paul used for the proto so we know it works. We may change this to hips later. We have cut it to the maximum of .5 so you will just have to get the exacto and a steel rule and the groove should guide your blade nicely and this stuff is easy to cut. Sorry for the bad iPhone pix. More tomorrow.

Heck yeah! I have 030 styrene that seems to be cutting well from my tests. I'll have a go at that. Got a crap ton of the stuff now, and that's also the acrylic for the body!!
