My Rocketeer Jetpack build progress thread

As far as I know those are the stunt gauntlets. They don't have a mounting bracket for the buttons, it's more of just a leather pouch. Also has a Velcro wrist strap and not leather with a snap. My prototype's had the velcro and then switched to the snap on my current ones which still need to be redone to get them closer to being accurate.

ack! that just means i need to flesh these things out more. i like that square flap that the button rests in. i can imagine for the purposes of film magic they didnt do anything. though, when it comes to these gauntlets alone, i would probably be wrong. lol. i was looking at small leather belt bracelets, but i think i can rig up a snap bracelet easier.

what im looking for as far as electronics; i want my pack to light up when i click the left button, and the fan turn on with the right button, so, both at the same time would mean "im about to fly", and just the right one means "its on". adding sound is something im baffled by, because a, i cant figure out appropriate sounds, b, i cant wire a sound kit to save my life.

thats ideally. i cant seem to find the light kit i was originally going to use.

i still havent knocked out the resin on the helmet. i keep getting sidetracked.

I'll post some pictures of the screen used gauntlets that I based mine from when I get home tonight, will probably answer some questions you're having!

beautiful! thank you!

here's what ive been doing while ive been applying resin to paper. :/ i swear, it looks and sounds like such a neat idea, but im just annoyed to no end that there's even the slightest possibility i have to make a new helmet. im going to not work myself over tonight, give the helmet a rest, and maybe when i go to orlando for school tomorrow, i'll knock out another layer on the inside. i want the inside to be tough before i even think about going on the outside.

anyway here's some good news!

this picture is great for me, because finally i can get an idea where that vent is going to fall on the center plate. the posterboard over the right booster is an idea i have to fix that nasty joint where the bowl meets the pipe, and possibly make the booster tube cosmetic plating easier. i know there's still a matter of that funny diagonal vent on the booster, but im not really concerned with that right now. i want my booster tubes to be one solid shape.

i'll be supergluing the ends on the inside, under the center plate, and then working my way around. then, i'll add just the top and bottom of the cosmetic plates, resin it,sand smooth, and fill as needed. the whole cuts at the top are to hide that nasty joint, which i figure is alot easier to do it this way, than cut off the hot glue, fill in gaps and sand the shape out of that bowl i desperately needed to be correct. then i can sand smooth, and fill. then the tips, and all those dohickeys.

im not going to touch anything else to this tonight, because there's alot i need to do before i can start gluing this down, and im starting to wonder if i should just take posterboard every where on this pack im not thrilled with how it looks and resin over it, and then that would defeat the purpose of me bondoing as much as i have already.

im really getting too far ahead here, but there's kind of an idea where im going with THAT.

now here's the gauntlet glove nothing super special just i trimmed them to where they're a bit more closer to what im trying to go for.:

that black mess will be covered up by the new gauntlet pattern i'll be working on.

the rest of the evening im going to be screwing around with some stuff to make a quick jetpack. i'll post a few pics of it if im happy enough with it to share.

you can always get the flyers shell brown gloves...those are perfect too...depending on your size, you can get them pretty cheap

Ok, I based my current ones on this pair:
1-vi.jpg

For my pair, I switched out the velcro strap because it seemed more period and authentic to do a leather strap and snap.

Here's the pouch style from Screen Used:

You can see the long barrel shape of the lower part of the button. Also this one has the leather strap with snap.

i figured out why my rocketeer helmet's been sitting kind of funny. lets ignore the fact that the individual pieces arent the same on both sides.

what the real problem was, they might have drawn it based on angles. one eye, is smaller than the other, and the helmet looks like it wants to sit at an angle.

im pissed. so, now i have 3 options.

1. keep going with this one. because halloween is too close, and ive already thrown in 2 coats of resin on the inside.
2. print it out again, and then flip the half that i prefer so it can be symmetrical.
3. both 1 and 2.

why am i mad? dumb **** like this slowing me down.

ive resigned to printing out both sets and trying that since i have 2 days this week i can write off doing anything constructive for my pack since i have to travel and stay 2 nights a week for school.

i have my clothing squared away, since im not going for 100 percent accuracy this year.
i got an avirex flightsuit this afternoon at good will for 5 bucks. the company wasnt opened until 75, however it made clothing in the ww2 style for the usaaf. Avirex - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

this is it, mine has a white tag.

so, as a pulpy hero type, and the jacket/boots combo i have, it looks really awesome.

id like to do some more research on the flight suit, to see if it were the type used in combat, or something, but the website is down. and a google search leads me to more modern clothing than their past military clothing.

on the jetpack front,
i dont have any photos. i set to work bondoing and filling the center cosmetic plate, so i can ready it to cut out the vent. im still debating if i want to make them a ^ shape or leave them flat for now. im also at the point where i think im going to cut out the parts of the booster tubes that dont match with the bowls, and fill it so it does. then i'll tackle the cones.

it wont be too much longer.

i have a question concerning resin, would it be in my best interest to give the pack a glaze of a thin coat of resin over it, with a very light sanding? then primer and paint. or leave it be and then prime and paint.

Did you see these ar home depott?
IMG_6807.jpg

base of the reflector is about 6 inches. stainless steel. And it's got the small fin slots pre cut more or less. I grabbed two to tinker with, but I've also got russ doing a spinning quote.

Np, you should have seen the look on the older gal's face when I asked
for a tape measure..... She asked why I needed it and I just blurted 'possibly for a rocketeer backpack' and just got this blank gaze/stare

i havent given up on this thing. the more i work on it, the more i want to get working on another one. ive been too busy to take pictures of my progress. here's where im at

first here's the helmet
37916_472581778161_577488161_6564051_1801010_n.jpg

what you can see, is ive resined the outside and i have hairs from mat prep work on the inside for thickness/sturdiness.

here's the inside of the helmet
44926_472581843161_577488161_6564054_1317439_n.jpg

so, what you cant see, is all the magical frustrating cutting i had to do to get it satisfactory. i cant believe how many problems ive had with this thing. i ended up cutting a vertical inch line every inch to get it so i can form it into the shape its supposed to be, because it did a wonderful job of warping again. anyway after i was satisfied with that, i resined another later on the inside and called it quits.

a few days ago i woke up with a bug in my ear telling me i need to reinforce the inside with chop mat, by spraying a layer of spray glue and putting them in to stick. so, i'll resin that and then call it "set for sanding." where i'll strictly be sanding, and filling the outside of the helmet.

here's a side view because that particular area towards the chin wanted to be a jerk, so i cut it out completely and filled it in. i win helmet. i beat you.
59670_472581818161_577488161_6564053_6527628_n.jpg

i also have been trying to figure out how im going to approach the fin. its thicker in some areas than in the front.

hey look, its that flappy part with hoses that goes to the control gauntlets!
66771_472583608161_577488161_6564072_349818_n.jpg

so, as you can see, its still waiting for rivets and the whole where the button will come through. in the back of my mind i figured out a way to put this together, and wire it up. it involves two switches from radio shack, and two sharpie caps. where im stumped is how im going to keep it attached to the glove while im sewing, and when it's done being sewn. im also far from pro sew man.

also, my buttons are red and black. not really photo worthy yet, but red button's for the led's im going to try to get wired into it(using a dollar store sword's board). im planning on wiring atleast the black one in the right gauntlet by halloween, which will run the fan.

and now updates on the pack itself:

jetpack.jpg

the red circles illustrate where i had to remove the tube, that involved taking a cutting disk (yay for aircompressors!) and cutting out where it didnt sit flush to the bowl, trimming down the foam(there was foam inside) and bondo-ing it smooth.

the green circle illustrates why in the future i will be doing a new one. the vent on the right booster is a hair too high. i dont know how that happened, because i made sure it sat right before i drew it in (i went as far as drawing up how the vents'll look in autocad, also how im going to make them now that i cut out the holes) not to mention, where that upside down t is, is completely wrong.

that single part of this whole project, next to the center cosmetic plate area, has been the absolute most incredibly outstanding pain in the ass. its either i make a new pack, or i go back to this part and hack the crap out of it again after halloween, which is probably what i'll do.

i also figured out the cones for the tips of the boosters. they'll require some resin, before i attach them.

so thats where im at right now with this thing. far from done, close to done, but not in a happy middle.
