My Rocketeer Jetpack build progress thread

I'm pretty sure I've already told you, but absolutely amazing job on this!

<3 you jairus.

thanks everyone for the help and compliments! im waiting on a friend of mine to update the pics on his facebook, i had him take some legit pics of the costume, and when i get those i'll take some better ones on the pack.

as for the shopping/parts list; i started another project and havent had a moment to go to home depot(i dont need anything from there yet). i hope to make another jetpack one day with this build thread as my guide but im going to change up some stuff using cad and transferring it to pepakura (that WHOLE center part of the pack just IRKS the **** out of me).

i finally got around to getting a shopping list together, first i'll write what you will be able to get at home depot, because thats the only home improvement store i shop at, and its the only one that i managed to find everything i was looking for at any given moment for this project. walmart was supplimentary for greebles, bondo and resin

JETPACK
silly putty - 2.00 walmart. you only need one, but you'll be sanding one half to be the same size as the other.
wiggly eyes - 2.00 3 bags at joanns fabric. you wont use all of them and you only need the black pupil part
bowls - 2.00 target. you'll need to get your air ducts first, and size the bowl to them. it took a few tries, and the ones i bought may only be a seasonal item.
airducts - 4.00 X2 you will be cutting these down. they come rolled flat, and connect to make a tube. these are metal, and will be where the rest of the airduct stuff is.
pvc pipe 1" OD - 2' is 2-3 bucks.
you'll need some type of harness, or create your own out of leather straps. if you must know what i used here, feel free to hunt me down and i'll let you know what i used specifically. like the rest of the pack by no means is it accurate in any way.

BOOSTER ENGINES
pvc reducer 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" - X2 2.78
pvc 3/4" 45 deg elbow - X2 .64
toilet ball - 2.00 ACE hardware and homedepot.
4" corrugated to straight adapter - 2.98 you need 2. YOU'LL ONLY BE ABLE TO FIND THIS AT HOME DEPOT. its near the out door irrigation piping.

CONTROL GAUNTLETS

push switches - 4.00 radioshack. they come in a pack of 2 one red one black, bring a sharpie cap to put them in for size, because thats how i wired my gauntlets and kept the wires safe after feeding them through the following tubing
5/16" tubing - 20 ft 3.69. in the plumbing dept at homedepot, you'll need to get extra for the booster engines.

HELMET
i used a pep file to make my helmet, its posted here a few times im sure. you're going to need some tubing because thats not included in the file.
1/4" tubing - 1.89 for 10ft near the 5/16" tubing in home depot
motorcycle helmet - i lucked out and got mine for 5 bucks on clearance at walmart. i bought 2. mind the etched warning and hazard stuff, so you dont have to cut even more off to cover up your screw up.

STUFF I DIDNT BUY, YOU'LL HAVE TO LOCATE ON YOUR OWN

vent is 1.80"diameter. it goes in between the boosters at the bottom.
Styrene, you'll need 1/8", 1/16". alot of each. you'll need it for the flippers, the helmet(sandwich the 1/8" into 2 pieces of 1/16") the top vent, and even to shape the pack itself if you want.
garden hose - you'll only need just enough scraps to surround the toilet ball part of the boosters and cover up where it meets the top of the 4" corrugated adapter.
coax cable - you'll need alot, there's eight wires that go on each booster engine. for each engine you'll strip the black rubber off six of them so it shows the silver inner sleeve of the cable, paint one silver, and one copper.
air conditioner vent grating - its hard to explain, but you can bend it until it breaks it to cut it and its meant to keep things from getting into ducts. you'll need it for some details and its helpful when you're sculpting the middle part of the jetpack.
1/2" ply wood or mdf - for the center piece to the top vent. mdf would probably be easier to work with, i used plywood, because i knew i can just use it straight off with a skim of bondo.
McDonalds coffee stirrers - get a big handful of these. you'll need atleast 12 for the flippers. cut the sides off of the flat part of them, and glue them down to your flipper and trim them to that. if you're anal about mcdonalds being on the side you glued down you can sand it. i didnt. i figure anyone that close to my pack i was going to smack away in fear of them breaking something.

i think thats it. if there's something i missed im sure i have a picture of it in the thread some where.

i lucked out at the only event i went to and i saw a friend of mine that he was photographer for. he hasnt gotten around to uploading his halloween photos yet, if it wasnt for catching him to get some pics, i probably wouldnt have any at all :/

at some point i'll get it all together and have someone take some pics for me if he never uploads them.

Loving this. One of my favourite movies and your pack and helmet look awesome! Get some photos of the costume up, so we can dool some more.

So many questions.

What was your biggest challenge with the helmet? what advice can you give me for starting mine?

What did you use for the nose cones on the jetpack?

After cutting out the lower vents on the jetpack, how did you get the lines to make it look more like a vent?
