My Iron Man Mark III Helmet 3d Print Files (V3 available in post #1 now!)

Re: My Iron Man Mark III Helmet 3d Print Files (New Helmet available in post #1!!!)

High yield hot glue works great too

Re: Iron Man Mark III Helmet 3d Print Files

I would say model everything except the wires
the helmet is almost finished! All I have left to do is add the screws on the back of the helmet!

on another note, who would be interested in the inside of the helmet looking the way Iron Man's helmet is supposed to look? I mean with all of the electronics and what not. It would take away some of the space in the helmet, but it would really add to the realism! I'm contemplating modeling this into the faceplate I have. Something kind of like this!

Finished smoothing out to a decent degree and primed and painted

Could've spent a little more time puttying, but it looks decent enough for what it is :)

Looks pretty BA, now draw a goatee on your finger and get to cosplaying LOL, Mine is on the opposite size of the spectrum... FRIGGEN HUGE!! lol, waiting on more filament to finish it off though.

Re: My Iron Man Mark III Helmet 3d Print Files (New Helmet available in post #1!!!)

This was my first print that was alittle too large so I played around with some paint.

What I do to "glue" PLA together is use some of the filament as a welding material and a soldering iron :) melt it together...on the inside part :) stronger than the rest of the print...

Use this stuff to glue the parts together. Works great on pla

I used masking tape on the outside of my helmet to hold my parts together while I plastruct the inside. Takes about 20 seconds to get tacky and I let it set overnight to make sure of a good bond.

I should have thought of that. Thanks for the tip

Re: My Iron Man Mark III Helmet 3d Print Files (New Helmet available in post #1!!!)

Hi all.

I'm trying to print these awesome files, but I'm having scaling issues. I know the first post said to scale it by every centimeter of ear-to-ear distance. However, when I import the files into Cura, the models are larger than the print volume AND the scale is "1.0".

Any idea what's causing this and how to correct it?

Thanks in advance.

Re: My Iron Man Mark III Helmet 3d Print Files (New Helmet available in post #1!!!)

hey drumguy any chance you'll be doing any other helmets? thank you for this!

Re: My Iron Man Mark III Helmet 3d Print Files (New Helmet available in post #1!!!)

Firstly, thanks for the excellent models - I'm having quite a bit of luck printing them so far. Pics when I'm not off to bed. My chief concern though: anyone having problems with the faceplate not sitting flush into the rest of the helmet? I cant tell if the widows peak on the skullcap is too wide and needs to be sanded down to fit into the faceplate, or if I'm experiencing some subtle warping on the top 'prongs' of the faceplate in which case, how might I go about fixing that?

Re: My Iron Man Mark III Helmet 3d Print Files (New Helmet available in post #1!!!)

Can you upload the original 3d files too?
I want to try and add some hinges to the helmet.

Re: My Iron Man Mark III Helmet 3d Print Files (New Helmet available in post #1!!!)

Printed the helmet out on the Stratasys Dimension BST 1200 at my school in three pieces (faceplate, chin, and the main head) as given in the first post. For the most part everything turned out pretty well, except the main body printed with gaps where the lines travel around the head. The middle section was still attached to the bottom solidly thanks to the ear pods, but the top part came off when I removed the support material. Nothing that some superglue didn't fix, just thought I'd mention so it can get looked at and maybe fixed. There was similar gaps in the faceplate for the top and bottom sections, but they seem to be holding up just fine.

I also ran out of red filament when printing the chin , so there is a small part missing in the cheek area (would have had enough if I hadn't scaled the faceplate wrong the first time and printed out a 3/4 size one). I may use the paint booth a friend of mine has and put some nice paint on it to finish it off, but for now I'm content to leave it be for now. I just need t ofigure out how I'm going to fit the pieces together in a way that I can take it apart easily.

Thanks for the files, they were much appreciated. I probably wouldn't have been able to make the helmet without them. Cheers!

WOW!!!! It is an absolute honor to have my files printed on a Stratasys! The helmet came out looking really great!

I've been having trouble getting my 3d modeling program back up and running after an unfortunate format (Thanks APPLE!), but as soon as I do, I'm gonna fix the gap between the top of the faceplate and the helmet, and the other little stuff that's wrong with these files.

But thanks for printing that out! I wish I had access to a machine like that!

Re: My Iron Man Mark III Helmet 3d Print Files (New Helmet available in post #1!!!)

Here's hoping that you can get your workflow running smoothly again soon.

Decided to work a bit on my helmet over Memorial Day weekend, motorizing the faceplate. I started with these servo brackets that I found on thingiverse and made some quick arms up in SolidWorks. The 3D printed arms work fairly well considering everything, and I like the look better than the thin metal arms. Right now I just have it hot glued in there until I figure out the permanent setup. I'm thinking I might design my own bracket that slots into the inner portion of the top vent on the main helmet, but I'm struggling to come up with a design that would work with a range of scaling on the helmet and still fit a standard servo (will probably have to share the original file in a couple of formats so people can change to fit their helmet). Also planning on running the servos with some flavor of Arduino just so it is easy for people to replicate, I'm a fan of the Teensy 2.0 but the pro mini might be the better way to go since it is cheaper ($10 on Sparkfun).

Space wise the servos actually help to make the helmet fit me better, and it doesn't really work unless I've got a tshirt or something stufffed in the back behind my head. But as it is my ears are pressed against the side and the plastic drags on them when I put on or remove the helmet (there is a small lip along the bottom that I particularly hate and have had to file down. Also I would highly recommend hollowing out the ear pods in a later revision, they are by far the thickest part of the helmet and as they are there isn't room for speakers or anything in the helmet unless I use a bluetooth headset or something). But part of that is just the result of having dumbo ears that stick out :p

I've also noticed more gaps between the faces than I originally thought as well as the jaw not lining up perfectly, I will try to find time to get some good photos to post. I'm not sure if this is from a problem with the files or if it was something on my end when I scaled them.

Would it be possible to get some screenshots or something of the information that describes the inner curves of the faceplate (forehead area) and the top of the helmet (specifically that inner portion of that intake vent)? Right now the servo brackets are only touching on their edges and it would be nice to be able to match the curve.

I just saw your post and wanted to say that I've also noticed this problem with my print. I figured that it might be warping or scaling the files wrong but now that I see your post I'm not so sure. I haven't done anything to fix it yet, I've just let the top rest slightly high on the helmet. Don't want to file the faceplate until I make a mold of it to keep as a backup plan, but that is probably what I will do eventually.

Great 3D models, thanks a ton for posting them! I have started printing them on my Fifth Gen Makerbot and they look pretty good. I scaled the first few way too big... but the second set is looking good so far.

Thanks again for making the files available, you rock!
