My Dak Ralter Helmet

Hey everyone. I know I’ve posted a few pics of the helmet paint jobs I’ve done, all those pics and more are posted here: AllGeek2Me

But between commissions, I’ve slowly been working on a helmet for myself. I’ve been so busy with other things; this helmet is going on 3 months now. I’ve always liked Luke’s snowspeeder Gunner, Dak. Don’t know why, maybe something as simple as I like the color blue and his helmet had the blue birds on it...who know why kids like certain things.

I started the process with a heavy sanding:

My goal was not to remove all the paint, but you rough it up enough so that after primer was applied you wouldn’t see or feel any raised areas from the original deco.

I then applied A LOT of white primer...maybe a bit much, but it seems to have turned out well.

Then I decided to tackle the push button on the right cheek. I’ve had some people request I leave it so they can utilize the functions, but I was going to something closer to screen accurate. I glued the seems, in hopes it would keep the button from moving and filled with model putty. Then lots of sanding, a bit more putty, more sanding, and more putty, followed by (you guessed it) more sanding. I then applied a final layer of primer. Here’s the end result:

The helmet sat like this for about a month or so, as additional responsibilities at work and commissions come in. But then, I actually had some time to lay the first decals:

So close! But it would be almost another month before I could apply the side decals.

I have not gotten around to weathering it yet. Hoping maybe next weekend. I was lucky enough to get a ESB style mic, which will be put into position on the proper side after everything else is done.

I know it’s not the sexiest or most exciting helmet, but it’s always been a favorite of mine. I have one done by RichiesArmor a life time ago (even got the Dak actor John Morton to sign it), but this will hopefully be one of the last pieces I need for my full Dak Ralter Costume that I want to wear to Celebration this upcoming year.

I’d like people’s thoughts, opinions, critiques, ect. I’m a bit nervous about weathering since Im trying for screen accuracy. Also, what do you all think of the side decals? Too big? Here’s a photo for comparison:

Thanks again!

Didn’t realize I never posted finished pics.
