So is it not true that the specific chemical process used on the show would yield blue meth?

I am pretty sure it was a plot device that the writers came up with so the DEA could quickly identify Heisenberg's product. I remember Vince Gilligan talking about it in one of the seasons commentaries, probably season 1.

Maybe if a blue food dye was added to it then you would have blue meth.

Kinda funny you mention that, I remember reading a year or two ago about meth that had been dyed blue surfacing.
