My Blade Runner paper prop

With all this Blade Runner madness going around, I've decided to take advantage of my materials and pulled out some old gear from my 'zine making days. I have recreated the money, made my own "idealized" bills with color (and used the backs of the Chinese bills from the 1980s, too), and have broken out my old silkscreen machine and re-taught myself how to apply hot foil to papers. I have designed and recreated the bill stamping, and am designing new ones - the bills are pretty much done but I don't want to show them off until I'm finished. But, now that I've figured it all out, I can:

Use dye sub and inkjets to lay down patterns and art
Laser toner for sharp details
Real metallic foils
Silkscreen designs in oil-based inks for a glossy sheen
use laser-cut stamps of my own design for the traditional stamped look

With all this "proof-of-concept stuff out of the way, it dawned on me that I can make a "perfect" Deckard Passport, for all those Off-World adventures I'd imagine he'd be called to go on, hunting Replicants. I have started a mock up, and will add some irridescent cellophane over the photo area, and laminate the whole panel (like a real Passport). The metal strip will be silver foil (all I have are leftover scraps of gold and bronze), and I'll foil the "USA" seal above the photograph. Might shorten his hair, too. Also working on clean adhesion of the gold foil to the blue vinyl/card outer cover... getting close but I've only monkeyed with it over the last couple hours.

Also designed a seal that incorporates the US, China, and Japan - the three major "superpowers" I see in the film.

Here's what I need to know if anyone can answer - does Deckard have a middle name? DOB? Any other idenitifcation? I'm just making this crap up.

Next up? Adding in the center pages, designing and applying the Earth-based and off-world stickers and Visa stamps. Any suggestions for places? Tannhauser Gate?

Hope you like. I'm just making a couple - it's going to be super labor intensive, and supplies are expensive.

Happy to hear ideas and thoughts you guys may have. This can be like the "Grail Diary" for Blade Runner.

Oops - here's a shot of the gold NOT sticking tot he outer pebbly cover:

Oh, and dig the owl on the bill ;)

Really cool original prop. I had thought of something like that for MR too, but that project got buried under a few other projects. That really does look impressive. I like the update and enhancement to the modern passport, especially the incorporation of the Japanese and Chinese into the US seal, real interesting stuff. Very creative.

My only suggestion would be to find a better photo of HF... the head looks disproportionate to the body.

Yeah, I'm torn on the photo - I like the fake-iness that echos the BR ID, but I haven't found an appropriately "youthful" Harrison Ford pic yet. If anyone has one, lemme know. Easy to change though - this is a Photoshopped stock photo with ANH Han face and random Harrison Ford hair from some magazine article.

Thanks. It's fun to make this dry burecratic stuff up by adding in-jokes and imagining what a "bleak futuristic 2019" would be like. People have theorized that there was a nuclear war or geological calamity (and the book talks about a war), resulting in a massive loss of animal life (Animoid life coming into existance in the vacuum), and cultures blending. I've had to think about this crap a lot lately, since I'm making these little slices of life, like the Passport.

So Tannhauser Gate - was it a place a Rep-Det would travel to? How far out into space are the Humans/Replicants, anyway?

I like the name Edward for his middle name - all three names end in "ard" which is kinda cool - and hey, maybe he's a replicant, right? So I can sprinkle clues throughout the pages.

Now, I know he's basically a glorified LA detective, and wouldn't travel much as a "local gumshoe", but Deckard is supposed to be "the best", and it's MY Passport project, hehe. Maybe he's so burned out and "retired" because he's seen a lot of crazy crap in his lifetime... or... maybe Tyrell implanted the memories. Gasp. Fun.

I think I'll have him as having travelled to/from:

LAX (natch)
Moon
Kyoto, Japan
Hong Kong, China
Buenos Aires
Tanis, Egypt (they're digging in the wrong place.)

Anyone else have a good one?

Also going to have a few things folded into the pages, like his "decontamination certificate", a special "hey I'm also a cop" stamp, maybe a mini-flyer from a nightclub that he stuffed in there while on the job, etc.

Oh, and as a nod to the whole "Thundarr event" that messed everything up, I'll have him as travelled through something forbidding sounding, like "Fallout Sector 8" or something... like there are pockets of wasteland out there.

...and I need to rent Soldier.

I really like that. You put a great deal of planning and effort into it and it shows.

Agreed. All your forethought is really making this project top-notch... oh, and the fact that you have the skills/resources to backup your great ideas is also helpful... :p

Nice job, Jason. :D

As to Deckard's DOB, HF was 37 at the time they filmed BR, so working backwards you come up with a 1982 birth year. Oddly enough, the year BR was released. ;)

Oooh, I'm so making the BR release date his DOB.
Awesome - thanks.

Noooo way. I'm not about to start making tons 'o copies of stuff I don't have rights to (especially when I sell model kits from Ma.K. as a license holder in Japan) - and no winky faces here - just sharing the neat idea I had, and wanted to "fact check" in case someone had more "canon" info on a Deckard bio...

Sorry, I really am. Also, I've stood up "for what I believed in" with some banned members, and I'd be such an easy target if I started selling stuff like this. Hey, on the bright side, someone will steal my idea soon enough. Hi EDC. (winky face is now appropriate.)

;)
