Through a rather roundabout way, I've found out that this stuff appears to be several different styles of Chinese paper, used for good luck and funeary offerings.
You're going to love this — It's called joss paper.
You can find it for sale online, and I've been able to match two of the common designs to stuff I've seen on the web.
Example:
So, for anyone who wants to decorate your Firefly displays / areas, you can now stick this on your wall.

I purchased it online for $4.60 total. A Goole search for "joss paper" will show you as many sites as you want.
Happy hunting.
