Molding with silicone from the diy store question

Well, the shrunken mother mold f'ed my first pull. That and lousy fiberglassing. The helmet is warped beyond repair and I should have used a thicker gel coat. I'll be making a fiberglass mother mold and try again.

I've added some pics of how much the mother mold has shrunk and my first pull, the key slot turned out pretty good.

So I made a mother mold with fiberglass. And made a new helmet, its drying right now.

Just taking advantage of the fact that my wife and kids are at my parents this week, the whole house smells like epoxy right now. I hope I can get the smell out by tomorrow night.

Update. The First pull with the fiberglass mother mold turned out better than expected. A small dent in the top of the helmet but that's all. I can work with this for my custom mando, I also cast the left ear twice with the left over resin.

I wanted to show the Finished helmet.
The rangefinder is attached with magnets which works great.

Thanks, i'm pretty happy with it. But i know i can do better with the same mold, or even a lot better making a new mold using the same technic and same master. I think using a layer or two of liquid latex to get a smoother finish in the mold.

The mold has a lot of imperfections but I knew that before i started. there are always three options. Fast, cheap and perfect. You can choose two and I choose fast and cheap so the cast took a lot of work to get it smooth.

I think that using latex first may change fast into perfect while still being "cheap".

P.S. I just joined the Mandalorian mercs forum to get more tips on how to finish my costume and hopefully join the Diryc Vhetin Clan.

looking good! at least you're having more luck than i am with my casting project.

just keep on trying. doing is the best way of learning. My mold turned out okee but i had to make the mother mold twice using two different technics. if i had the knowledge and experience I have now when I started I would do it different and would have a better result. but learning is part of the fun.
