Mk III Baker Sonic Kit Build - Thread

Oooooooooooo....this I must see. The detailing on my Parks Sounded Sonic are overdue for a new coat of Testors Black but if this stuff works better I'll switch!

Yeah right? I was thinking the transmitter part and the bullet in the neck part would be the parts I'd use this on. My all brass Baker sonic with the steel core rod I used gun blue on the parts that are supposed to be painted and it turned out perfect. They also apparently make a version for Brass as well.

You keep teasing me like this, Straker, and I'm going to be bouncing in my seat like a Warner Brother (and a Warner Sister).

I know, right? I should be getting the bottle in the mail by next week to test on...something. XD I don't want to strip the paint off this sonic as I like the finish but I'll test it on some aluminum something for sure. ^_^

In the mean time, remember how I said I wasn't going to weather the sonic? I lied. XD I added a worn edge to the emitters halo along the edge similar to what TLP used to do. I did it because I dinged the edge and didn't want to touch the paint up. I used 2,000 grit paper and just removed the leading edge and then went over the halo with some CD scratch remover polish I use on paints and plastics. Turned out well.

I didn't remove the paint all the way around. I left the edge alone at the bottom figuring that if the paint was removed due to age then it wouldn't get taken off due the the body of the sonic getting in the way at the bottom.

Ok, I now have shortened the bullet by 3.5mm to about 12 - 13mm, so now the halo assembly now looks like this. :confused

Needs a good going over with steel wool, and it will come up real nice.

That looks pretty good. The only thing I would add though, is that I think you should keep the bullet looking a bit more like a bullet. In this pic, it looks like a complete half round, and I think the center part of the halo on Baker and Pertwee's sonic was a bit pointier.

This was Straker custom design part that I manufactured to his requested specification.

On some of the baker sonic screen shots, I see on the slider thumb grip there is a band with makings, anyone got a good pic of that part.

Was looking at making a brass band the would slide over the thumb grip to include that.

You curtanly have gotten that array looking real sweet Straker, real sweet.

Actually I've seen a lot of shots where the bullet looked rounded depending on how many times they replaced the emitter assembly due to damage but, all things considered most replicas aren't accurate anyway and I thought the rounded bullet gave this one its own look that keeps it from looking like anyone else' replica. Maybe someday Rassilon and I could sit down across the internet and try like hell to come up with the most accurate 4th Doctor sonic we can using screen grabs and even the CO toy but I'm not as invested in that. I just wanted to improve a bit on the Rassilon Mark 3 sonic a bit by some work on the emitter assembly. Mainly just to make his sonic look its absolute best. I think there's some other things on this sonic I'd like to try adjusting but I'm pretty happy with how the emitter turned out on this one.

As far as the thumb band goes there seems to be a debate whether it's natural aging or chipped paint and whether the markings were damage to the prop or added. Personally I think the white band is...okay I guess and I'm not into adding damage myself XD I have seen some people add markings on a white band where it looks like symbols but I thought that looked odd myself.

Thanks Rassilon. I'm really liking how it's turning out. ^_^ A big test will be how parts will look being stained black rather than painting them black. Can't wait to try it.

I was thinking of replacing the head on my MKIII sonic kit (since I have one of the prototypes and the head was off a little) and I like the one Straker's getting. Something about the back end looks a little odd to me though and I can't place what it is. I've attached some pictures I have of the real prop for reference.

Well I can tell you that the third pic in is of a TLP sonic replica. XD The rest are very nice but...when you say the "back" end is odd...which end is that? The bullety, pointy end or the magnet/transmitter end? One thing I will say is that the Rassilon sonic isn't what I would call "screen accurate" but it is a great representation in its own right and that's why even though I tightened up the look with a smaller emitter ring and larger transmitter diameter I wasn't trying to make the sonic look like in the show. XD Well, not exactly anyway. XD

Ooops. I thought I skipped the TLP when I was grabbing those screenies from storage.

I meant the magnet end on your custom. It looks fantastic but something visually isn't synching in my head.

Also I size matched a couple of those pictures to Rassilon's sonic (which I brought to work with me today) and I have to say it's a lot more accurate than I first thought. He really did a great job on it.

Oh that, yes, I wound up using an Alnico button magnet on my RB Replicas sonic which is more accurate than what Russ normally uses though I counter sunk the screw head on that. If I had to guess it looks more like they used a wider headed screw and placed it pretty prominently in the front of the tip. I actually like Rassilons design really well, I just made it much wider XD I think the new 14mm version he made me will be very nice though.

Well it is going to be close proportionally to itself though scale wise it is a bit too big. The CO toy is a great piece of reference. I was shocked at how close the toy was to the correct dimensions. The Rassilon sonic is a bit oversized but...I really like it the way it is. XD Once I had put the new emitter on it I was really digging the look. There are three things I wanted to see if Rassilon could customize on the body for me but right now that isn't possible.

Another good site for info: Sonic Screwdriver Through The Years

The guy used one of my pictures at the top which I found amusing.

Another good site for all sorts of reference material for DW: shillpages - Doctor Who Image Archive

Only issue I have with that first link is that he like everyone else includes the remote for the garage door from Inferno and the giger counter from the Three Doctors. XD I have to protest those being included because in Inferno, aside from the door the Doctor never even uses it on anything else and I would think the Sonic Screwdriver would come in handy in a world with no friends also he never calls it a sonic screwdriver. The giger counter is the same, he never uses it as a sonic and he never calls it that either. Also both are of a completely different aesthetic than the established sonic he uses later, one having a ball on top and the other having a dish shape. Now you could argue that in those serials they didn't have what would become the 3rd Doctors sonic screwdriver yet so they could technically be a stand in and that is true but again he never uses it for any of the sorts of things the sonic is used for and never refers to them as such. If it's a sonic, why not use it to get out of a jam? I think it's because it isn't. He's a gadgeteer, he's built remote controls for Bessy and things to jam transmissions made from tea cups, he probably has a few other gadgets on him.

End of nerd rant.

Oh and Shill Pages is handy I just wish they posted larger screen captures. XD

Like most of the props I have built from Dr Who are my interpretations of the actual prop, if I had the actual manufacturing drawings I could build a 100% screen used Baker sonic prop

But as I dont have them drawings I make do with feed back and members inputs.

Exactly! And because of this your props have their own flavor and that makes them unique.

As for feedback, I do have a few ideas that i think would make your Baker sonic more awesome to go along with the awesome that is the new emitter halo you made me but I'd need to put the drawings together in paint to show you. Just a lower grip and slider adjustment so like...three or four things I think would really make your Baker sonic as close to perfect as we could make it.
