Mini Darth Vader costume completed: page 6 pics, pg 7 new con pics

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

no prob.. LMK if I'm missing anything and you need more details. It's been a heck of a ride and a ton of fun doing this one.

took a little more time on this one, but decided to make another Cod that is smaller. It just looked too off.

Course- was late into the night, so will have to test fit this tonight sometime. I think from the photos I took and using a pair of Nick Jeans as a reference- we should be solid with this one.

I looked at the shins again too. I think it'll be pretty easy to detail them out and going to go for it anyways. Just probably try and work on some other things first as they could be left alone in a pinch. Got about a month before the debuts at a local Con around here- so I really need to get cracking on the helmet. If all else fails..... I'm cutting up the other bucket and just going to use the lower section and do a Vader Reveal. I'm just not sure how long either of the boys will want to wear the helmets anyways.

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

the smaller cod does look better! :)
Maybe an easy detail to add on the shins would be some cap nuts and paint em black.

The smaller cod looks great on him. We just did a quick test fit sans the rest of the costume. I just put on the cod, belt and chest to see placement. It'll look great.

Good idea on the cap nuts. Do we know what is on the shins? They looked more like pyramid shaped peices like those old 80's rocker wrist bands.

I had found a bracket kit (spiked/studded) like 80's rocker bands at Micheals the other day. The kit had 3 different sized studs and the leather band. I just wanted the smaller studs out of it, and didn't want to pay $8 a pop to get a few studs.

I know I've seen them before sold seperatley too- but want to look for where they sell just the studs. I think those may work out well too for the shins.

like these, but the mini ones:

hmmmm..can't say off top of my head.
But, ya prolly could fashion those out of clay or wood pretty easy.

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

Pefect. thanks. went to ebay to find the pics of those wristbands- but got distracted and didn't get back to looking for just the studs.

just need to figure out what size I need now- and well, if anyone wants 88 of these things... I only need 6 per shin. LOL.. but, at lest they are cheap for a pack of 100.

I'll have to look- I'm sure I've seen them sold locally too.

couple of test shots with new cod- Ah.. much better.

Looking like a typical rainy memorial weekend coming up- so, will see what I can finish up on this.
Need to really get the front buckle worked on, the green squares shaped up and added to the belt boxes, and straps added on the back of the shins to hold them on (and maybe some foam inside for cusion).

Helmet=- of course, and then detail shins if time.. It's almost there...

That looks much better. I was going to mention the cod but was beaten to it.
This is going to be the envy of little boys all over the world. Great stuff! :thumbsup

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

Been a while since I've added some updates, but running out of time. Con in less than a month.

I took a slight hiatus- as a jet ski I was riding blew up and dang near blew my leg off. So, been laid up with 2nd degree burns and trying to recoup from that.

Waiting for a few things in the mail anyways to continue on, but excited to see if something I got will work out.

1- I ended up getting some of those pyramid studs on ebay, which are on the way. Hoping the 10mm size will work. I don't know what other costumes may need these (they were cheap anyways)- but I have 100 of them on the way in black. If anyone needs some- PM me. Just a self address postage or pay for postage and I'll send them out if you need some. I only need 12 of the 100.

2- I bought something to see if it would work out better, and anxious to get it as it looks in the pics i've seen of them and from the descriptions sounds about the same size as the Vader kids pail I was planning to use for Nicks helmet... except this cookie Jar has a domed lid already, and might be an easier conversion even if I need to expand it a bit.

Sorry to hear about the jet ski burns! ouch!

Great find on the mini-helmet cookie jar! That might be the PERFECT way to get the dome finished up!

Take it easy! :thumbsup

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

Thanks. leg is killing me.. oh well.

I'm hoping it works out, but found a youtube video of a 3yr old with the dome on his head and just holding up the cookie jar in front of his face. It might be kind of small, but I can't really tell. Some descriptions of it say about 10 inches tall, some say 11 and one said 12. I thought the pail was pretty small too- and it actually fit his face once I got to cutting it so it was wearable.

the dome might be a little tight though from the video I saw... But. Whatever.. cheap and will give it a go. like I say, I can expand it maybe- or maybe Nick head is smaller than the kid in the video??

if nothing else... the face sculpt looks quite a bit better than the cheapy pail, so I might be able to use that instead as the mask.

Will see- just waiting to get it to see how big it really is. From some of the other vids I've seen, it doesn't look much different in size from the pail, so it may work out well as Nicks pretty little for his age and this kid in the video looks a little bigger.

vids for ref... I just can't tell, but anxious to get and see if i can make it work:

Between the two, I liked the cap nut look better and went with that. Thanks for the suggestion. I ended up getting nylon cap nuts, so I could sand down the bottom hex a bit and it didn't proturd upward quite as much. But still had a good acorn shape and size on top.

A few WIP pic. Caps added, some sintra added for triangular top and stip down the middle. I ened up heating up the the main form and indenting that a bit. And because it's thicker, I cut out the scalups to indent them more.

So, a little bondo added in the first few pics

After some sanding, a little more bondo and more sanding- I hit it with primer.

Here's a few shots after the first coat of black (bad lighting):

Working on the sanding of the 2nd shin now, along with misc stuff.

Waiting for the helmet/cookie jar to get her (hoping tomorrow) to see if I can make that work.

Glad I decided to detail out the shins. They certainly aren't perfect, but they look pretty good I think.

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

Looks killer! Can't wait to see how the cookie jar works out - when you get it tomorrow.

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

I like the positivity Jon! haha. I never know when stuff gets sent from California. It's either really quick for what I'm expecting, or it's takes like weeks if they use UPS. But said 2-3 day USPS, so I'm hoping it's today.

The shins were worth the extra time. Even if you can't see them all that well when he's wearing them- Nick was pretty stoked this morning.

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

Helmet came. Nicks naping, but dang it's small. Don't know if it'll work like I had hoped but will see if I can make something work.

Time fir a nap- then off to go kart with AJ "Dinger"- 43 NASCAR driver.

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

What a day- helmet is way small. If this could have just been a tad bigger it would have been a great mod to a great kids lid. Dang, back to the drawing board.

And while a fun night pro-karting, Allmendinger kicked my butt by 3 seconds. Those karts Rock.

Shins turned out great. Adding some inner padding and straps tonight.

Re: Electronic help-thanks. Vader belt boxes-almost done. mini vader costume progress

Check the shins off the list. Painted, straps added, and some foam inside for comfort.
