Slowly but surely making progress on the McQuarrie Vader shins
They're still really rough currently but now that I think I'm happy with the overall shape I can start cleaning it up and getting the details nice and sharp.
I'm pleseantly surprised at what I've been able to do so far as this is literally the first thing I've ever tried to sculpt, so I really am making this up as I go along haha

For this next update I've decide to try something a little different to usual... I've had a crack at doing a video for my build
icon_smile1.gif

Since the details of the shins weren't really showing up well in pictures I decide that having a go at a video would be a great alternative.

In the video I show where my shins are up to, how I've been working on them, what I plan to do next and then how I hope to achieve that!

I've not done anything like this before so I've done the best I can so hopefully you guys find it at least interesting, I'm just glad I've found a way that should help better show what I've been up to. If this is something that you guys like please do let me know, as well as hitting subscribe on the YouTube Channel! I say that as this is something I've been wanting to have a go at for a while so please do let me know here or in the comments on the video.

Bought myself a present over the weekend ;)
This should prove enormously helpful in my build!

After a year of waiting and saving my money I was finally able to place my order for the Sideshow Collectables 1/5th Scale Ralph McQuarrie Darth Vader Statue! And it arrived this week!

To say that I'm stoked with this would be an understatement! The statue looks downright amazing, it's by no means small either coming in at 22 Inches in height!

Aside from the fact that I seriously love being able to have this in my collection, it's going to be insanely helpful in my build here for my RMQ Vader! For the first time I'll have access to a three dimensional piece of reference material and not have to reply on images of 2D Art or statues in other peoples collections.

It's always great when you have an excuse to buy something, I swear bought this purely for 'research purposes' ;)
With that said... I took a whole heap of photos to share!

Wow it's been a while since the last update (been focused on my formal studies more than anything as I'm in my final year).

But with that said I'm glad to say I had a bit of a eureka moment with the blaster!
One of the challenges reference wise was you only ever see the blaster in the holster (that’s on all art, statues, figures).

So, there’s not really an ‘official’ reference of the front half. Just as a refresher here's what it looks like on the Sideshow Statue:

35620756584_14986b0149_b.jpg

Now since I'm huge RMQ Fan, I bought that huge 2 volume box that was released a year and a bit back, and I was flicking through just yesterday and in a section totally separate to Vader there was sketches of random ‘blaster concepts.’ One of which looked to have a back that was pretty damn close to reference material I had for the rear! It’s not 100% perfect but is the closest I can get to an authentic representation. What better way to do that than use McQuarrie’s own sketches as reference to nail the style!

Now I know this is a lot of effort to go to for something that will literally live in the holster, but it's a very enjoyable challenge.
So specifically I'll be using the front half of the bottom blaster with the reference material I have for the rear of the blaster seen in the holster of the statue.
I've made a bunch of progress on a 3D model too, so I'll get some WIP pics up for that soon.

Alrighty, as promised here's some screen shots blaster 3D model, it's still a work in progress but it's coming along nicely.
I'm also making a video to give an overview of the 3D Modelling process, and I'll get that posted some time down the line for any that may be curious :)

Incredible work! I know it would be a pain, but any chance down the road of fixing the broken Photobucket links from the earlier pages? Would have loved to see your WIP.

Thanks so much for the kind words man :)
And I'm glad you mentioned that actually, I'd forgotten that I'd not fixed the links for this thread.
I'd fixed them photos on 2 other forums I've been posting this WIP on but forgot this one. When I get a chance I'll get them fixed up :D

I was finally able to comb through all my 3D modelling time-lapse footage and put together a video documenting the CAD process thus far.
I've posted the video below for those that are interested in what happens behind the scenes when I'm doing 3D modelling work.
(All that I need to do now is polish off the barrels and add the tigger + trigger guard)

Funnily enough I do have an update.
It's been two years since the last update as I've had several other large scale projects I ended up committing to so this project had to go on the back burner.

However, I was finally able to get back around to finishing off my design/3D model for the blaster.
As mentioned in the posts above there is no reference for the front half of the blaster throughout the concept art or statues. So to establish a design for the barrel and trigger I used other Ralph McQuarrie blaster concept sketches as a basis for my design.

In addition to the trigger and barrel I made some general refinements and adjustments around the rest of the design.
All in all I'm rather pleased with the result :)
