Massive's 2012 Halloween Costume Contest Entry

She agreed, but she wasn't excited about it. I explained in an excited voice that she would have one of the most awesomist costumes ever at her school. I just hope there are no other RPF members that go to her elementary school. I could tell she did not want to dissappoint me and (as she whispered goodbye to her princess outfit this year) agreed. I was going to build the suit whether she wanted or not anyway. This way...it would be a practice build for me and is something the wife could get behind because it was "for her":love.
A little bit about me, I just started reading posts and view incredible build after build from these forums this year. I really would like to build a suit for me but I am not sure what it will be yet. I have seen Stealth's youtube videos and decided it was time to start on a build back in June of this year. Having no prior experience with this type of hobby, I wanted to give myself plenty of time. I haven't posted a build thread before because, well I was embarrassed that my build wouldn't be up to par with the rest of the builds I see here. I would say I am 85% done with her suit and should easily be done before Halloween this year :).
I chose to build my 10 year old daughter the MKVI from Robo3867's templates and Sharkman_IM's helmet. It is the most cost effective way to go for a foam build. Learning which angle to cut the foam can really test your patience level sometimes. I used 1/2" (10mm) foam for most of the armor. The smaller stuff required 6mm foam. I imagine the hands will be done with 2mm foam. I really wanted a thick look to the armor to give it that "I'm tuff look". I have redone parts because of wrong angle cuts, bad scaling, and "How is she going to get into that now?". I have cut and burned myself countless times. Those exacto blades cut through foam without resistence when they are new. Enough about my jibber jabbing, let me post some progress pics...

that's so awesome that she was ok with being Iron Girl. She's going to be a hit at school. You have no idea.

I love the abs section, you did it so clean and well.

Here are some more pics....
I started the painting process on the arms. I used 5 coats of glue and water in 1:1 ratio. I chose regal red and gold for the colors. I had to build something extra near the heals. It was the only way I could get here feet to slide in there. I really have to find out what the secret is to making that work.

Re: You want me to be Ironman for Halloween daddy?

Thank you Stealth :). I scored those abs with an exacto. The feet didn't make sense to me at all. According to the pep files, you have to chop about a quarter of your kid's feet off to make it work. I improvised on that one. As a note to myself, I should have ended some of those cuts with 45 degree angles so they look like they are going into the shoe and and not abruptly stopping on the side.

Re: You want me to be Ironman for Halloween daddy?

yeah, I didn't really follow the shoe files. I pretty much just made it as a cover and put it over a boot, using my own boot sole to walk on.

Re: You want me to be Ironman for Halloween daddy?

The painting process was rather rewarding. It kind of makes you stand back and just appreciate it for a while before you have to get back to working on the rest of the build. It also made my daughter super excited now because it actually is evolving into Ironman. I know this because at our last family get together she pulled me aside and asked if I wanted her to suit up and show the crowd what I have been working on. Yea right.."if I wanted"...hahaha.

From one armor wearing girl to another, please tell her I think she looks amazing!!! Great job, dad!

Re: You want me to be Ironman for Halloween daddy?

I have been working on the helmet. It is made with the same 10mm foam. I would have used 6mm but I ran out and bought too much of this 10mm. That is a scaling nightmare. I figured Sharkman_IM is an adult so I punched in .95 for scale. That did not work and it came out to snug. I said to myself.."Self...you didn't account for the thickness of the foam". I started the second at scale 1. Again, too snug. These were only partial test builds luckily. My third attempt I scaled it to 1.15. The circumfrence of her head is only 21" so I knew this would be overkill. It is a little on the bobble head size but it fit her comfortably. I had to put one extra piece of foam padding on the top of the inside so here eyes would line up. Here are some of the test builds. I will post more pics when I figure out the vizor positioning, light up eyes but can still see thing. Her school has so many rules about costumes covering up the face that I have to keep that in mind as well.

Will do. I can't wait till she starts to read this thread. I decided to test the suit's mobility with a little dancing. This isn't like Stealth's Electic boogaloo breakdance but it is cute ...

HAHA!!
That is very cute.
The armor looks great, too...

I'm sure you'll catch an earful when she finds out she's been Youtubed for all to see XD

Re: You want me to be Ironman for Halloween daddy?

Just a little update on my progress so far....
The helmet is a little front heavy. I hot glued a stretchy strap to the bottom rear part. It allows her pony tail to act as a counter balance. Just waiting on the magnets I ordered to test the eye lighting. I went the xrobots method. I used 2 layers of a bath sponge for the mesh. Here are some pics so far.

Awesome suit man! I am sure once she becomes the centre of attention (unless another RPF suit is there but still think she will be) she will love it. I can't wait till my boy is old enough to become Warmachine whether he likes it or not :p

Tom.
