Mark VI Pepakura Iron Man Build

Re: Iron Man Build

Wow. Done sanding for the most part. I put on a coat of primer, sanded with 400 grit and put on another coat. Got a little carried away and have a drip or two I have to sand out :unsure

Also got a few more magnets glued on. Had to add some bondo to the back inside of the main part of the helmet so the magnets would be flush with the ones on the bottom piece.

Still debating on whether or not to keep the original teeth. They cleaned up OK, but they aren't perfect. And still have to finish up the ear pieces. Am going to try boochieboy's hardboard ears since I have a scroll saw and router to work them...can't hurt to make the attempt since the pepped ones I have are a bit warped.

Re: Iron Man Build

This looks awesome, first time or not. Your bondo work is really nice

Thanks. I have to give some credit to Boochieboy814, since I viewed his tutorials on how to mix and apply the bondo. Would have probably glopped it all over the helmet and had a mess to sand if I hadn't watched them first...

Re: Iron Man Build

@ TryChick. Yep, those magnets are the same ones I got from Harbor Freight. I told you those little buggers were strong, lol. I'm going to mount mine horizontally however, and fiberglass them in (completely encapsulate them in resin and glass) so I don't have to worry about them breaking off the helmet when pulled apart. Your work looks great....I'm glad the tutorials could be helpful to you...that's why I'm making them. I really appreciate your subscription to the channel. What will you do for the eyes? I think I'll make the eye lenses from plexiglass which I'll sand to make them opaque then use l.e.d. lights behind them. Keep up with the awesome progress...you'll be done with that helmet in no time!

I saw someone else used epoxy putty to attach the magnets, so I may try the same thing with mine in addition to the epoxy glue I already used--totally surround them except where they meet the magnets on the other part of the helmet so they are embedded in the putty. I figure it would be cleaner than fiberglass and resin and easier to work with. I'd be able to put in the bottom piece with the corresponding magnets stuck to the ones they will match up with, press the bottom part to the main helmet and see where the magnets need to go based on where they indent the putty, then set them in.

Also, I'm thinking for the white part of the eyes, I may use part of a 3-ring binder divider (the 3-holed 3 X 11" opaque white plastic divider that usually comes with a binder ). I have plexiglass I could use, but the divider is already "frosted" and it's flexible enough I should be able to bend it to fit the eyehole shape. Will see how that works. I already have LEDs and a battery holder, and am going to try to make them go on when the face plate comes down and go off when it goes up since I'm going to attempt to motorize the faceplate :eek

Primed and ready to put the eyes and hinges on. Back part is attached with the rare earth magnets I got from Harbor Freight. My 12 year old son is my model :p

Still deciding if the teeth are salvageable. Will use some bondo and see if I can make them work before crafting new ones...

Re: Iron Man Build

Your helmet is looking damn sweet bro, love it! Can't wait to see the ears shaped and on to finish this bad boy off.

Tom.

TryChick is a woman. :facepalm

But, yes, I agree; It is coming out great!
No more turbo ginsuing yourself, though! You've got work to do! :lol

Thanks guys. Trying to figure out how everyone got the screw details on their helmets. Any advice? Don't want to go forward until I figure out the best way to do that...

I was just going to use real screw heads. I'll use a countersink drill bit to recess areas into the helmet, then grind or cut off the screw heads and epoxy them into the helmet flush with the surface. You can also carve them in carefully with a sharp pick or needle file...but will take a lot longer.

PurduMadLou. Here is how I did it...lots of binder clips on the inside...

Re: Iron Man Build

Check out this post from ProjectEarth's helm - post #462 on page 19. It's how I was going to do it once I get to that point.

Lookin' great.

I tried detailing with a needle file and didn't like the way it looked, so I rebondoed those areas and will start over on that. I decided to try using nylon screws, cut the shafts off and countersink the heads using a grinding wheel on the dremel to make the holes. May sand the tops down a bit first to make them flat or may leave them as they are with the tops slightly rounded. I figured nylon screws would be easier to cut than metal ones. Will post a pic when I get one attached.

Re: Iron Man Build

Loving this helmet build! I'm hoping mine comes out as good as this! Keep it up!

Thanks. Still slaving away! Had to actually punch holes through the faceplate and main helmet part to get the nylon screws I bought set in just right. Tacked the screws in with superglue and will use some epoxy glue to make sure they stay in. Got too excited and got a bit ahead of myself painting the faceplate gold a couple of nights ago, forgetting I had the screw detailing to do still, so I had to lightly sand the whole thing down again and will repaint it after I'm satisfied with the screws.

I left the screws a bit raised, they look more like actual screws that way to me instead of just detailed ones...

Got my helm all "clipped up". Hoping to resin the outside tomorrow night. Will the resin on the outside hold it together enough to take the clips out and resin/glass the inside?

Re: Iron Man Build

Loving the work on this. The detail is pretty amazing! I am blown away by what you guys are producing on this site. Makes me feel bad about the quality of my own work. In a good way though. Need to work harder.

Mine held together fine. In fact it was a #$%# to separate it at the teeth and jaw...and I only put one coat of resin on the outside and one coat of fiberglass/resin on the inside before doing bondo, then separating...

Re: Iron Man Build

I got my nylon screws in and fiberglassed/resin behind them, and got a couple of coats of primer on. Still deciding if I should keep the teeth...any thoughts?

Will paint red and gold tomorrow...so excited to see this getting close to being done.:popcorn
